Thinking back to times when hipster didn't have an automatically pejorative response. Used to be an aspirational thing like the person around who is aware at all times or similar.
I wondered if the term hippie shared a root since I think it was also something adopted from elsewhere. Think it was a term on the jazz scene before it denoted long hair scruff bag in the late 60s and may have developed that association as people who already had the term associated with them went through personal changes.
But I think iit also denoted people who were ahead of the curve in terms of listening and style trends before it ttook on its current association.

Dang forgot to finish off the comment on the grateful dead crossing over into hipster awareness by saying that apparently stoner rock did at one point.
I remember people viewing this new interest with suspicion possibly because having people superficially latching onto things in that way can lead to them being devalued.
