Ware > Murphy >>>> Dua Lipa >>>>>>>>>>>>> Kylie

The Annie is a different thing imo, and I would've loved it in 2014 more than I do now.

Disco LP debuted at #1 in the UK: she has now had #1 albums there in five calendar decades.

(she didn't get a #1 in Australia until the 2000s.)

Ware > Dua > Roisin > Kylie for me

Trust me, I’m more disappointed in myself for the order of the middle two than anyone in here could be

I hadn't noticed this was happening - a 24 hour Kylie channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t982j1D5V_o

currently playing one of my fave videos: "Did It Again" <3 <3

Dua’s is best, to me

alright, i tried dancefloor and it feels like it's trying way too hard for me.
i don't think i fuck with this at all.

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Monday, 16 November 2020 05:49 (three years ago) link

idk if it's weird to talk about the songwriting on a dance-pop record but the real strength on this record for me is the way the melodies move. i get ppl's issues with the production, it's certainly broad, but i think the songs have really interesting and catchy interlocking parts

reviewing this has certainly renewed my faith in people being awful

no

fwiw katherine if I were a reviewer I'd have written something almost identical to yours. You nailed it.

I agree. I can't swallow this lumpy album.

the pre-click blurb they posted takes away from a great album write-up, regardless of having heard the album or liking/disliking it.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 06:18 (three years ago) link

The Kylie vs Little Mix stuff on Twitter has been really grim on both sides and everyone involved should be embarrassed. Katherine I'm sorry this is happening to you, again, and I know it's easier said than done but you must remember that these people are entirely without merit and their performative hate is fandom theatre

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 06:37 (three years ago) link

sorry this is happening to you katherine :-(

"Kylie hasn’t been disco for twenty years" is certainly a hot take.

Sorry this is happening to you but think boxedjoy nailed it above with "performative hate"

groovypanda, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 09:34 (three years ago) link

jfc Katherine in case you weren't aware, they're going in on your review on the Keep It podcast today. Fucking disappointed in them all rn.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:16 (three years ago) link

count me in on the "this is not a good album" crew
Ware > Dua > Roisin seems about right to me but, based on "Feed the Fire" and "Impact," I think SG Lewis is gonna break into the upper disco circle by the end of the year.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7m-J8KG8tBA

Would also argue that Selena Gomez and Azana and Ariana Grande and Simmy slot neatly and perfectly into this sound too but i'm sure i'd be outshouted

Amy #Kony Barrett (map), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:25 (three years ago) link

Why isn't anyone mentioning Victoria Monét's Experience -- are her disco tracks too "trad" for this context?

it's AG in your faaaace.... (morrisp), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:29 (three years ago) link

i loved the singles from this. i think brad has a good point about the quality of the melodies. i also think the lyrics on those two singles are perfect magic-eye palimpsests that are either the most profound thing ever or generic claptrap depending on how you look at them. classic pop lyrics. not sure how i will feel about the album - i'm kind of deflated about buying anything right now after losing all my music - but i'm going to tune out all the stan bullshit if i can when i get around to listening to it, next month i guess. *sigh*

Amy #Kony Barrett (map), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:30 (three years ago) link

xp I loved Moment/Dive/Jaguar/Experience/Touch Me but that EP is like 17 minutes of great music, ten minutes of filler ("we take it fast like it's fortnite"?) and imo not really on the same level as Ware or Lipa

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:35 (three years ago) link

A few groaner lyrics aside, I think the whole EP is really tight -- and if you're looking for new disco in 2020...

it's AG in your faaaace.... (morrisp), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 17:49 (three years ago) link

on Kylie's Spotify page there's a disco playlist of stuff she (or at least, her team) has curated that features Roisin, Lipa, Ware and Monet alongside some classics and it makes me want to invite her to an afterparty

I don't know what that is but am not surprised; as I mentioned, people are fundamentally sadistic, and would stop at nothing to hurt others

I wish I knew what I did wrong besides existing

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 21:07 (three years ago) link

I already sent them an email apologizing but if it even gets read (the only contact was a general email address) the only outcome I expect is to be mocked even more

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 21:12 (three years ago) link

because that's what people do, because they are fundamentally sadistic

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 21:12 (three years ago) link

Why would you apologize to them? For what? For having an opinion, or for having the temerity to express it? Fuck those people and anyone who loves them.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 21:31 (three years ago) link

because clearly I have done something grievously wrong? people generally don't get called out on major podcasts otherwise

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 21:31 (three years ago) link

There's no such thing as a "major podcast". Again I say, fuck those people and anyone who loves them.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 21:34 (three years ago) link

it's hard to find details on listenership but this one seems to have a lot of it, so tens or hundreds of thousands of people now hate me, and I don't know who, and could encounter them at any time assuming they don't seek me out instead. plus, it also seems to be a political podcast, which suggests that I did something wrong that was also offensive

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 21:38 (three years ago) link

Well, I know how much I care about the opinions of strangers. YMMV, clearly.

I liked your review. (I couldn't make it through the album, and I wanted to, mostly due to vestigial love of Fever.)

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 21:42 (three years ago) link

the worst response to a callout is to dig in one's heels and assume one is right

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 21:44 (three years ago) link

If you surrender your aesthetic principles at the first complaint from some fucking nobody, you have none.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 21:52 (three years ago) link

clearly thousands of people don't agree with that statement

also, I don't believe anyone deserves to be dismissed as "some fucking nobody," but even if I did, the hosts of a major podcast with huge listenership certainly wouldn't fit that description

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 21:59 (three years ago) link

it's all a game, now you're kind of notorious, try the hat on, have fun! mass media does not equate to a real relationship with a person

horse girl (map), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 22:00 (three years ago) link

that's my two cents but good luck

horse girl (map), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 22:00 (three years ago) link

I don't fucking want to be notorious, that is the literal opposite of what I want

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 22:04 (three years ago) link

You appear to be reacting to someone on a message board telling you that unnamed people disagreed with your review, on a podcast that you have not listened to; that is not anyone "calling [anyone] out", let alone anything that means you shoudl reconsider your opinion about a pop record, and a long way from anything to apologise about. To whom? For what?

Exactly. You're a writer; you share your thoughts with strangers. When one of them objects, your first response should be, "Well, who the fuck are you? And who asked you?"

the podcast interviews figures like Ronan Farrow and Kimberlé Crenshaw, which suggests that it might be that, but I'm afraid to listen

I just skimmed thru it; the Pitchfork/Kylie discussion begins at 1:28.30. The discussion is really dumb, but katherine - I suggest you don't listen.

the episode description:

Ira, Louis, and Aida discuss the conservative fervor over Harry Styles wearing a dress on the cover of Vogue, the COVID season of The Bachelorette, Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X’s new videos, Twitter’s new “Fleets” feature, the Grammys, Pitchfork’s Kylie Minogue review, Obama’s A Promised Land playlist, and more. Plus, Rachel Bloom joins to discuss depicting mental health on television and her new memoir I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are.

Sounds like people riffing on pop culture that they have had exactly zero time to give any thought to, and are reacting in the moment to fill minutes.

@oneposter (💹) (sic), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 22:17 (three years ago) link

That pretty much sums it up. Now they're going in on Obama for putting Beyoncé's "Halo" on his playlist ("real Beyoncé fans don't fuck with it... she doesn't even perform it anymore!")
