Like, if someone says Gilmour-era Pink Floyd is terminally boring faux-deep dadcore or whatever, I know exactly what they're talking about, even though I myself don't experience it the same way at all.

xp

pomenitul, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 00:41 (four years ago)

I'm guessing you mean "Gilmour era" as in "post-Piper" but if you mean the post-Waters Gilmour-led Pink Floyd, that's actually impressive and maybe a controp if you hear none of it that way.

to party with our demons (Sund4r), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 00:46 (four years ago)

I do mean post-Piper, yeah. That wasn't entirely clear, sorry.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 00:47 (four years ago)

As a matter of fact, there is no such thing as music.

― pomenitul, Monday, February 1, 2021 4:32 PM

earlier in this very topic, i believe it was me who declared that all bands are terrible.

i'd like to think the proper way to word this conclusion is:

all bands are terrible, so as a matter of fact, there is no such thing as music.

throw the rorschach thing in there, and yeah: just cut my ears off, we're done here. the whole thing was noting but a stupid thought experiment. cue simpsons clip of comic book guy about to die.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 00:47 (four years ago)

Alternatively, 'Talk Talk is just some mumbling self-important bloke singing formless songs with no proper hooks' is also an understandable statement, regardless of how much I might emotionally disagree with it.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 00:48 (four years ago)

all bands are terrible, so as a matter of fact, there is no such thing as music.

New board description imo.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 00:49 (four years ago)

I wasn't trying to say that opinions about music are worthless, they are what I live for here

Dan S, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 00:53 (four years ago)

When people say a piece of music is "corny" very often what that means ime is that it's overtly emotionally manipulative, PS is totally "guilty" in that sense. And others.

I don't think it's juvenile, but then again i'm extremely juvenile myself.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 00:59 (four years ago)

Itt people are presuming that the way to discredit the concept of a rorschach test is to deny the existence of ink and paper

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 01:03 (four years ago)

Also, *this* is yr new board description:

At some point, I will attempt to write something about why I don't think it's corny or juvenile, although if music is purely a Rorschach tests and all responses to it are pure interiority with no relation to outside referents and existence is meaningless, I'm not sure if there's a point. What good would writing do me?

:D

pomenitul, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 01:12 (four years ago)

Ftr, posts I was responding (admittedly grumpily and unfairly) to were a bit stronger than "our response to music is shaped by our own point of view" and included qualifiers such as "entirely" and "not related to any". Also, I haven't taken a Rorschach test that I recall but aiui Rorschach inkblots are designed to be ambiguous geometric patterns that are not directly representative or expressive. A lot of music is created with rather different intentions and purposes. (I actually like abstracted hyper-formalism myself, though, tbf.)

to party with our demons (Sund4r), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 01:15 (four years ago)

Music is representational!

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 01:19 (four years ago)

That's my controversial opinion

what and WHAT!!???!

singing formless songs with no proper hooks

― pomenitul, Monday, February 1, 2021 4:48 PM

i know this is supposed to be a faux negative critique, but this description will mostly likely have my undivided attention.

A+

"Rorschach inkblots are designed to be ambiguous geometric patterns that are not directly representative or expressive" sounds like a lot of the music I like

Dan S, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 01:23 (four years ago)

Kinda tempted to start a 'Music that sounds like Rorschach inkblots' thread now.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 01:24 (four years ago)

Metal Machine Music springs to mind.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 01:25 (four years ago)

i think some terry riley would apply as well.

good thread idea, btw.

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 01:36 (four years ago)

I like some, a little bit, of the following artists' music, but mainly have ngaf about:
The Carter Family
Kasey Musgraves
Taylor Swift
Elvis Costello
U2
Radiohead
Moby
New Pornographers
Eminem
Sarah Vaughan
Van Halen
Judas Priest
cookie monster-vacuum cleaner-leaf-blower vocals

heavy metal is terrible and I am only pretending to like it to get laid and it hasn't happened so I am returning to now listening to my true musical love, which is all Mike and the Mechanics, all the time

beach boys and bruce springsteen are lifelong headscratchers for me. can’t relate to what others see there _at all_. both repulse me on a visceral level like mighty mighty bosstones or something tbh.

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 07:02 (four years ago)

It’s all those glockenspiels

Master of Treacle, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 14:23 (four years ago)

I don't much care for the Boss either aside from Nebraska, so… *high five*

xp

pomenitul, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 14:24 (four years ago)

Springsteen. Jesus, I'd rather listen to a leaf blower.

Waterloo Subset (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 14:53 (four years ago)

I hate even seeing his face.

Waterloo Subset (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 14:54 (four years ago)

i think it was blowing out of my small town and having access to karaoke bars where i could impersonate a leaf blower to his songs that did it for me

maf you one two (maffew12), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 14:56 (four years ago)

Yeah, there's definitely something about Bruce Springsteen that repulses me as well. I can't really explain it. Something about his voice maybe, I'm not sure what it is.

silverfish, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 14:57 (four years ago)

He's too American for me. Like full-blown, all-out, unashamedly over the top American. It's too much for me to bear.

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:02 (four years ago)

haha was gonna say maybe what repulses you guys is "america" as a concept

Totally! And I feel that way about the Beach Boys too.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:05 (four years ago)

xp It's true though! I like loads of American artists with their own particular take/fringe/niche of an America - real or imagined - but jfc Springsteen is America, it's too much!

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:06 (four years ago)

xp to voodoo

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:06 (four years ago)

Ha, Pom, I get that!

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:07 (four years ago)

new controp:

some stoner bands play that slow because they're so high and bad at guitar that it actually takes them that long to change chords

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:08 (four years ago)

it's like y'all don't have darknesses on the edges of your towns
