As Rob Sheffield and I discussed on the Auriculum podcast that went up yesterday, Oh-OK’s miniscule catalogue is commercially available again—though also going fast and also, to be sure, streamable—The Complete Reissue. It comprises 17 songs where the long out-of-print 2002 CD dubbed The Complete Recordings somehow comprises 23. The CD was sequenced so the Athens band’s two legendary EPs occupy the first 10 tracks that lead into 13 live tracks; on the vinyl, four EP tracks are followed by five of the same live tracks before six EP tracks are followed by another two. There’s a sense in which this is a good idea, because the EPs are so legendary that the CD’s live stuff is experienced as a dropoff that’s less pronounced on the vinyl, in part because the material the compilers single out tends more finished and a closer match sonically—no male voices, for one thing. As a result the vinyl homes in more on the distinctly girlish voices of Lynda Stipe and Linda Hopper, who were in fact 19 and 22 when they convened in Athens G-A in 1981 but, crucially, sounded much younger. For further elucidation, I recommend the CD’s liner notes, written by Robert Christgau and Carola Dibbell, our most auspicious collaboration primarily on the strength of Carola’s insights. Details get misty 20 years on, but figure I provide the biz context, which does the job, and Carola most of the many aesthetic apercus, which both sparkle and giggle. Here those liner notes are.

MOTÖRHEAD and Germany… it was always a love affair.

Throughout the Grammy-Award winning band’s illustrious 40-year career, Germany never wavered in its loyal and fanatical support of MOTÖRHEAD’s untouchably loud rock ‘n’ roll, with the band regularly selling out tour after tour. And on December 5, 2012, at the Berlin Velodrom, MOTÖRHEAD played one of their biggest-ever German gigs to 12,000 delirious, delighted and demented MOTÖRHEAD fans during the Kings of The Road Tour.

The event was thankfully recorded, and on April 23rd, Silver Lining Music will proudly present Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin on CD with bonus DVD, double vinyl and via your favored streaming platforms.

Featuring Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee, Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin is a crowning, definitive statement as to the power the trio had long held. Theirs was a line-up which had spent decades cracking sound barriers, bending ears and decimating lawns worldwide, consistently delivering the Motörgospel to hundreds of thousands of fans, and this line-up was MOTÖRHEAD’s longest serving by a considerable distance (Phil joined in 1984, Mikkey in 1992, and the band played as a trio from 1995 until the band’s final show in 2015).

Throughout Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin their powerful synergy boots its way through the speakers with the boisterous charm and dirty, dangerous, sweaty gusto that was the Kilmister/Campbell/Dee trademark. From the unapologetically furious “I Know How to Die” to a deliciously raucous “Going to Brazil,” Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin is all about the thick, raw and liberating power of MOTÖRHEAD live, with longtime producer Cameron Webb bringing his mixing skills to the party as well as doing a 5.1 mix of the DVD. Further highlights include a favorably feral “Rock It,” a rudely raunchy “You Better Run” and a classic one-two haymaker of “Ace of Spades” and “Overkill.” The leading track from the album will be a cranium-cracking “Over the Top,” a song which must be as close to definitive of this band as you’ll ever find.

The whole night was captured by Herwig Meyszner, who has also produced concert films for the likes of Saxon, Exodus and Kreator, with a multi-camera no-shot-missed shoot that captures not just the energy onstage but the energy on the floor. In so many ways, Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin is a joyous celebration of Lemmy, Phil, Mikkey and this special night in Germany, and whether a collector completist or newbie to MOTÖRHEAD’s music, Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin is a welcome reminder of what real rock ‘n’ roll is truly about.

The Scissor Girls
by The Scissor Girls

A vinyl pressing of their handmade, self-released demo tape from 1992. From 1991 – 1996, the Scissor Girls reigned as the most jarring, intense, and unpredictable band, the centerpiece of the “Chicago no wave” scene. Their recorded legacy (two LPs, a 10”, and a handful of 7”s) is all highlights, but nothing else sounds quite as friendless and focused as these very first recordings. Seven pin-sharp, searing, precise songs. Limited to 500 copies. Full color old-fashioned "tip-on" sleeve with spot varnish and printed innersleeve.

i'm excited for this:

Belong To The Wind marks Forager Records’ debut release: A lovingly curated collection of crooning psychedelic folk and soul songs gathered from American 45s of the 1970s. The compilation features 10 songs from 10 different acts, each with an indelible story of love, loss, loneliness, and an unrelenting desire to shake the confines of routine existence.

This LP aims to shed light on the more opaque cuts of these brooding artists. Many of these songs were recorded at the early stages of a career, at a time when experimenting and searching are pursued with reckless abandon. As a result, these songs are aggressively honest and uncompromising. Many have a distinct sense of the lo-fi DIY variety. Others are polished in production. Some are minimal, tentative and vulnerable. What all of these songs share, is a transportive quality. An uncanny ability to take a captive listener on a search for the soul, and a journey into the bellowing fields of easy reflection.

Sit back and enjoy a soft trip through the hazy milieu of a loner’s mind.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 17 February 2021 18:13 (three years ago) link

Within A Few Degrees (W/DVD)
Artist: Bob Frank

Folksinger Bob Frank was born and raised in East Memphis. After serving a tour in Vietnam, Frank got his start in the music business as a contract writer for a Nashville publishing house, with a mandate to churn out commercial ditties for the country marketplace. He didn't find success in publishing but he did find a record deal and made his debut release in 1972 for legendary folk/blues/roots label Vanguard. Though he wouldn't have another release for 30 years, his songwriting output was unabated, and he created a huge library of home recordings. While he had all but disappeared from the music business, his songs were recorded by Jim Dickinson, Chris Ledoux, Gary McMahan, Jerry McGill and others. In the early 2000s, he formed his own label and began releasing a string of well-reviewed albums (A Little Gest of Robin Hood, Keep On Burning, World Without End, and more), and at the same time discovered that he had become a cult artist whose work and whereabouts were discussed by many a music connoisseur on the internet. Copies of his Vanguard album had become rare-an eBay treasure that might run you $100. In 2014, Light In The Attic teamed with Vanguard Records and re-released Frank's storied debut. This current release, Bob Frank - Within A Few Degrees, examines the story of that debut and the life of the songwriter afterward and includes never-before-released songs from the eras preceding and proceeding the cult Vanguard album. Bob died in 2019 at his home in El Sobrante, California, but not before sharing his thoughts on the titular film in this set: "I come off as just one more ordinary, fucked up mind!" He loved it.

From Don Giovanni:
Boston No-Wave Progenitors VITAMIN Discography
Recordings 1981
To Be Released April 16th
This release is the first time the collection has been made officially available.

"Vitamin was imbued with the type of self-belief that allows one to ignore all walls. I was a total fan the first time I saw them."
-Roger Miller, Mission of Burma (producer of the Vitamin studio session)

“Vitamin refused to ‘act like a band.' (Their performance was) a spontaneous demonstration. They fooled around, had fun on stage, stopped in the middle of songs, made things up [...] They’ve blown off firecrackers and shot hot dogs from canons. We decided to come to the interview prepared for insanity.” - Boston Rock Magazine, 1980.

For Immediate Release: Don Giovanni Records has announced the first official release of the discography from VITAMIN, the inspiring but poorly-documented band from the early 1980s Boston punk scene. Titled Recordings 1981, the collection is available for pre-order now, and will be released April 16th, 2021.

The track "Black Sheep" from the Roger Miller (of Mission of Burma) produced studio recording is available on all streaming platforms and Bandcamp now.https://vitamin1981.bandcamp.com/"> https://vitamin1981.bandcamp.com/

“We’re called VITAMIN, in case you didn’t know,” snarls vocalist / violinist / keyboardist Margie Politzer before the band rips into a set at The Rat, the recording of which is captured in this collection.

It was 1979 when Boston teenagers Jason Shapiro and Mike McGlinchey saw the open door of punk as it turned to art-punk and no wave, and scurried straight in. Shapiro was 14. McGlinchey was only a few years older. Neither had played an instrument for long when Vitamin formed.

Wide-eyed, the two took-in bands at Boston loft spaces and factory basements, hugely influenced by Pere Ubu label-mates The Girls, the absurdist band of art-school drop-outs. In time, they convinced The Girls ex-violinist, Margie Politzer, to join the band. Margie’s John Cale-inspired violin, her NYC origins and first-hand CBGBs experiences imbued the band with a new spirit. They finally added experienced drummer Chris Gill to complete the line-up.

Inspired by the no-wave impulse to tear rock apart and build something new from the blistering pieces, Vitamin’s sound was raucous and careening but playful, with a dash of conceptualism for good measure. Truly joyful noise.

While they existed in Boston at an inspired time for the underground, Vitamin didn’t last long. Margie left the band in the fall of 1981. Jason and Mike became increasingly influenced by the Boston hardcore scene. By 1983 they were no more. But their brief life stands as a difficult-to-top example of art-making for its own sake, and a document of youthful collective creation.

Jason went on to join glam band Celebrity Skin and is now a member of Redd Kross.

Including the band's studio recordings, as well as archival live recordings from several different performances, Recordings 1981 marks the first time the puzzle piece of Vitamin has properly been placed in the larger scope of the evolution of punk and art-rock. Extensive liner notes from Pitchfork contributing writer Jenn Pelly are included in the packaging, which give the brief but impactful history of the band the context it deserves.

xpanded Digital Editions of The Jacksons Studio Albums--Triumph, Victory, and 2300 Jackson Street - Out Friday, April 30

Martin Luther King & Barack Obama’s Speeches Featured on the “Can You Feel It” Remix Released Today

2LP Vinyl Reissue of The Jacksons Live! Coming Friday, March 26

New York, NY - March 19, 2021 - Epic Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, announce the second wave of titles in The Jacksons definitive album project. Expanded digital editions (featuring bonus tracks) of the group's last three Epic studio albums--Triumph (1980), Victory (1984) and 2300 Jackson Street (1989) --will be released Friday, April 30 and available for pre-order starting today. Each album comes with three ‘instant grat’ tracks when preordered.

As part of the project, an exciting new remix of “Can You Feel It” was created by producer/composer Greg Curtis (engineered by Jon Nettlesbey) and executive produced by John McClain:

Can You Feel It: The Jacksons X MLK Remix: Greg Curtis kicks off his production with a roaring drum line and bookends the mix with recordings from the late Martin Luther King’s acclaimed 1968 The Drum Major Instinct speech at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Midway, excerpts from the great Barack Obama’s first inauguration speech inspire. The production is capped with King’s words, “Free at last, Free at last; Thank God Almighty, Free at last.” Listen here.

The Jackson’s definitive album project:
The expanded digital releases of Triumph, Victory and 2300 Jackson Street are available alongside The Jacksons (1976), Goin' Places (1977) and Destiny (1978), released February 12. The six studio albums recorded by The Jacksons for Epic Records trace the group's spectacular leap from their Jackson 5 boy band roots to their role as avatars of an R&B/pop revolution (1976-1989). Each title includes the original album in its entirety, bundled with additional bonus tracks and may be ordered here:

A Psychedelic Brazilian Holy Grail: José Mauro 'A Viagem Das Hora'

https://soundsoftheuniverse.com/img/Ulp5RWJYWEFvYlladUh6M2dDcUY5QT09/faro224.jpg

Recorded in 1970 at Odeon studios in Rio de Janeiro: the same time and place as all the music he ever recorded, José Mauro's A Viagem Das Horas wasn't released until six years later, when label owner and producer Roberto Quartin licensed the tracks to fellow Brazilian label Tapecar, who curiously released the album with several tracks already released on Obnoxius. Finally, over half a century on, A Viagem Das Horas will be released with three never before heard tracks, "Rua Dois", "Moenda'' and "Variação Sobre Um Antigo Tema", as Mauro and Quartin had originally intended.

The first ever comprehensive collection of Treasure Isle discomixes, comprising virtually every 12” single issued, plus 4 previously unissued recordings from the vaults.

The dancehall phenomenon of the late Seventies resulted in renewed interest in the sounds and rhythms of rock steady and early reggae; a development that prompted noted producer Sonia Pottinger to revisit many of the classic recordings in Duke Reid’s legendary Treasure Isle catalogue that she now owned.

The Duke had been a dominant force on the Jamaican music scene during the Sixties and early Seventies, when he had produced an array of hugely popular sides from his famed Treasure Isle studio on Bond Street, Kingston. Upon his premature demise in 1976, Pottinger inherited the business, although it was not until the close of the decade that that the true value of Reid’s work began to be appreciated once more.

Aside from re-releasing numerous classic Treasure Isle sides on 7” and a trio of “Hottest Hits” long players, Pottinger also had Treasure Isle sound engineer, Errol Brown, remix many of Reid’s most significant sides, updating the sound to fit the new dancehall style. The result was a series of 12” singles that saw issue in Jamaica on either the Treasure Isle or her own High Note label.

Virtually all of these recordings, along with four previously unreleased sides, feature on this essential collection. And with all but a few of the tracks making their CD debut, this 3CD set is a must for all fans of rock steady, dub and dancehall, as well as admirers of Duke Reid’s inimitable Treasure Isle sound.

Mad About Records
LP Deluxe reissue in thick carton cover w/ OBI strip & insert

**Deluxe reissue of this extremely rare, privately-pressed Brazilian jazz/psych album!**

Mandala made only one eponymous album, recorded in 1971 but released only in 1976. A very rare and influential album, featuring future members of Grupo Um (Nazario and Zeca Assumpcao who also played with Hermeto and Egberto Gismonti) and Pau Brasil (Nelson Ayres) - two seminal bands from the Brazilian instrumental scene of the 80s. The sound is a mix of Jazz Fusion with a Brazilian footprint - with a dash of psychedelic atmosphere and the spiced influence of oriental music.

David Bowie 1970 rarities collected on new comp ‘The Width of a Circle’
Bill Pearis
Published: April 14, 2021

A new compilation of rare David Bowie material the artist recorded in 1970 is on the way. Named for The Man Who Sold the World's opening cut, The Width of a Circle is being billed as a companion piece to that album's 2020 "Metrobolist" reissue, featuring non-LP singles, alternate versions, and BBC sessions, including 21 never-before-released recordings.

More specifically, the two-CD set includes David Bowie and The Hype live performances from early 1970 -- The Sunday Show where he's introduced by John Peel and Sounds Of The 70’s -- as well as five songs by Bowie from The Looking Glass Murders (aka Pierrot In Turquoise) and 2020 Tony Visconti mixes of five tracks including "The Prettiest Star." There's also a 48-page book.

There's also a 10" vinyl The Width of a Circle EP being released, featuring 2020 Visconti mixes of "The Prettiest Star," "London Bye, Ta-Ta," "Memory of a Free Festival," and "Holy Holy."

Additionally, Rhino is releasing a picture disc version of The Man Who Sold the World that comes with a Bowie poster.

The Width of a Circle set and the two vinyl releases will be out May 26 via Rhino and are available for pre-order now. Check out the full tracklist for the two-CD set, as well as the artwork for the vinyl releases, below.

Another archival Swell Maps release, Mayday Signals, is out June 4 from Easy Action. Looks like a lot of it precedes the first LP. This is one of those bands where you would think the barrel would be empty, but apparently not? A comprehensive box set would be useful but maybe not cutup/random enough in spirit.

Think this was out on the 23rd:

MOTÖRHEAD’s Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin, a previously unreleased recording from the 2012 Kings of The Road Tour, is available today via Silver Lining Music.

Recorded December 5, 2012, Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin captures Germany’s love affair with the Grammy award winning band as they play in front of 12,000 delirious, delighted and demented MOTÖRHEAD fans at the Berlin Velodrom.

Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin is available on CD with a bonus live DVD, as a double vinyl set, box set (GSA Retail Exclusive and via D2C Worldwide Ex GSA, containing CD with bonus DVD in Digipak, double black vinyl gatefold album in 180 gm and MOTÖRHEAD branded passport cover) and via digital platforms.

Throughout Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin, MOTÖRHEAD’s powerful synergy boots its way through the speakers with the boisterous charm and dirty, dangerous, sweaty gusto that was the Lemmy Kilmister/Phil Campbell/Mikkey Dee trademark. Further highlights include a favorably feral “Rock It,” a rudely raunchy “You Better Run” and a classic one-two haymaker of “Ace of Spades” and “Overkill.” The leading track from the album will be a cranium cracking “Over the Top,” a song which must be as close to definitive of this band as you’ll ever find.

A longtime favorite of heavy metal, punk rock and rock ‘n’ roll fans alike, MOTÖRHEAD also became unlikely media darlings around the globe. Early reviews of Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin have proven that five years after leader Lemmy Kilmister’s death, listeners are still ravenous for “new” MOTÖRHEAD music.

“…there's something about live MOTÖRHEAD recordings that make listeners feel as though they're in the crowd. The act's many years of experience lent to a robust and confident performance. MOTÖRHEAD's passion was simply undeniable, clearly displayed here.” – Blabbermouth

“‘Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin’ is a superb live album and DVD. It doesn’t get too much better than this.” - New Noise

“This live performance shows MOTÖRHEAD at the top of their game, as they have been performing as a trio for over a decade at this point.” – Classic Rock

“‘Louder Than Noise...Live in Berlin’ is a live album which shows everything for what MOTÖRHEAD stands. If you hear it, you'll get a lot of fun and some real Rock'n'Roll feeling. It's an honorable last release.” – Whiskey-Soda.com

“MOTÖRHEAD’s collective energy is as strong as it ever was and this is testament to the strength, depth and breadth of material they recorded throughout 40 illustrious years, across 22 studio albums. ‘Louder Than Noise …. Live In Berlin’ captures the very essence of this.” – Metal Planet

“‘Louder than Noise…Live in Berlin’ (is) a presentation about which MOTÖRHEAD’s most devoted fans will make plenty of noise.” - Phil’s Picks

“You’d think Germans are the biggest fans of MOTÖRHEAD based on the reactions of the crowd at the band’s 2012 Berlin stop on the ‘Kings Of The Road’ tour. It’s beautifully captured on the new album ‘Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin,’ with 12,000 screaming fans and big hits displayed in all their glory.” – Riff Magazine

“As another statement of how good MOTÖRHEAD is live, ‘Louder Than Noise…Live In Berlin’ is titled perfectly because in truth, only MOTÖRHEAD could be louder than noise.” – Cryptic Rock

DAIS RECORDS ANNOUNCES GETTING THE FEAR COLLECTION LP
DEATH IS BIGGER: 1984-1985
OUT JUNE 18, 2021
WATCH THE VIDEO FOR "AGAINST THE WIND" HERE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On1fpTja8b4
It's testament to how fertile England's mid-80's musical landscape was that the splintering of short-lived post-punk pioneers Southern Death Cult seeded so many memorable but divergent groups – from widescreen rock legends The Cult to romantic pop duo Into A Circle to “the Asian Public Enemy,” Fun-Da-Mental. But the band's most potent subsequent cross-pollination was undoubtedly Getting The Fear, formed by The SDC's rhythm section of Barry Jepson, David 'Buzz' Burrows, and Aki Haq Nawaz Qureshi, joined by Temple Ov Psychic Youth associate Paul ‘Bee’ Hampshire on vocals.

Galvanized by Margaret Thatcher's “iron fist” austerity policies and the cultural liberation of punk, the group blazed to creative fruition, quickly landing a lucrative deal with RCA. But immediately after recording their 1984 debut single, Last Salute, a shake-up at the label left them stranded and without support. Rather than stall in music industry purgatory they chose to dissolve, escaping their restrictive contract. Bee's lyrics on “Last Salute” are fitting final words: “If this must end let it pass me by / I’ll remain your friend, only flowers die.”

But this is of course only part of the story. Death Is Bigger: 1984-1985 rectifies history's error, collecting the group's entire vault of demos and unreleased songs alongside liner notes and a photo gallery capturing Getting The Fear in all their high libertine glory. The compilation's 10 tracks are alternately brooding, spiky, and sneering, fixated on dreams, sex, and Charles Manson (the sleeve of Last Salute famously features a detail from Manson's embroidered waistcoat, unbeknownst to label execs). Razor wire guitars slice across tense rhythms, veering between minimal and melodic, occasionally flowering into psychedelic poetry, revealing Bee's deep affinity with Psychic TV.

Taken as a whole, the album showcases the breadth of forking paths facing UK post-punk in 1984: pop eating itself, new wave while still new, transgression as alternative not affectation. Getting The Fear's music feels eclectic and unfettered, following whim, lust, and impulse, glinting with darkness against the fires of youth: “The earth is still beneath my feet, I start to sink to lose myself / Friends and lovers stand around unconcerned, their eyes in flames.”

THE GUN CLUB’S 1981 PUNK-BLUES CLASSIC DEBUT FIRE OF LOVE RETURNS WITH DELUXE DOUBLE-VINYL AND DOUBLE-CD REISSUES VIA BLIXA SOUNDS
Both the LP and CD Editions Come with 10 bonus tracks and the Previously Unreleased Live At Club 88 – March 6, 1981

Street date July 23, 2021

LOS ANGELES, CA. (Tuesday June 1, 2021) — With a howling and unholy mix of punk rock and the blues, Jeffrey Lee Pierce and The Gun Club exploded upon the L.A. club scene in the early ’80s. They recorded their classic debut, 1981’s Fire Of Love, for the local Slash/Ruby Records label. And now that legendary album has been unearthed and brought back to life as a deluxe two-CD and two-LP set.

Both the double-CD and double-vinyl editions contain a digitally remastered version of the original 11-track album, produced by fellow L.A. scenesters Chris D. of The Flesh Eaters and The Plugz’s Tito Larriva. The CD version will include 10 previously unreleased four-track demos and alternate versions, while the LP will include a download card for the digital version of the 10 bonus tracks.
Both the CD and the vinyl versions will include a second disc, the previously unreleased Live At Club 88 – March 6, 1981, a concert recording capturing the band’s incendiary live set at the legendary West L.A. dive bar.

The double-vinyl version will be released as a two-LP set packaged in a gatefold cover with extensive liner notes by drummer Terry Graham and remembrances from producer Tito Larriva and co-producer Chris D., as well as rare photos and ephemera. The CD version will include a booklet with liner notes, photos and ephemera.
Born on June 27, 1958, Jeffrey Lee Pierce grew up in the East Los Angeles suburb of El Monte, California, before moving with his family to the San Fernando Valley, where he attended Granada Hills High School. Back then his main passion was acting. Eventually, his interest veered to music, but he held on to his love of drama and would later inject it into his music and performances. He’d been toying with guitar since the age of 10, and by his late teens and early 20s, he’d formed a few bands and wrote about reggae for Slash magazine under the pen name Ranking Señor Lea.
It was in Creeping Ritual, a band Pierce formed with guitarist Brian Tristan, in which Pierce found his footing. He’d discovered the Delta blues from the record collections of Canned Heat singer Bob Hite and L.A. scenester Phast Phreddie Patterson, and decided to make them his own. Although his first bassist and drummer bailed, the band — rechristened The Gun Club by Circle Jerks’ singer and Pierce’s one-time roommate Keith Morris — became a reality with the addition of the fully formed rhythm section of bassist Rob Ritter and drummer Terry Graham. They had already played together in punk band The Bags and could hold down a solid foundation for Pierce and Tristan — now known as Kid Congo Powers — to improvise over. “He was injecting blues into the heart of punk rock, struggling to give life into something new and brilliant even if it was old and obvious at the same time,” Graham says of Pierce, in the book More Fun in the New World: The Unmaking and Legacy of L.A. Punk.

Fire of Love captures the Gun Club at their rawest on such originals as the unforgettable album-opener “Sex Beat,” the addictive “She’s Live Heroin to Me” and the psychobilly stomp of “For The Love Of Ivy,” an ode to Cramps guitarist and future Kid Congo bandmate Poison Ivy Rorschach. The band also delved into their influences on the set, digging up Tommy Johnson’s “Cool Drink Of Water” and Robert Johnson’s “Preaching The Blues” and jolting them back with jumper cables via Pierce’s new arrangements and “Elvis from Hell” howl.
As Graham writes in the liner notes, “I couldn’t be more thrilled to know Fire Of Love has given so many a nice kick in the ass…I not only loved fighting off the Devil while a member of Gun Club, but I’m proud of what we did on Fire Of Love with Chris and Tito as our guides. And if this music continues to irk the purists, I couldn’t be more proud. Jeff, you were one hell of a great musician, but you knew that.”
The Gun Club went on to record several other albums — including 1982’s Miami (reissued by Blixa Sounds in 2020) — before Pierce’s death in 1996, yet Fire Of Love is their finest hour.

I was going to post about this since I had seen mention on Fb from ex members and the foundation.

Wish somebody would say more about the original rhythm section Brad Dunning and Don Snowden. Especially since Snowden wound up cowriting Willie Dixon's memoir.
So I assume he came to the band with some awareness of the blues in some form.
Haven't put a chronology to JLP and access to Hite's collection I think Phase Phreddie was pretty early anyway. Also turned him onto a lot of jazz stuff.
But Rankin' Jeffrey Lee wrote about reggae among other things for Slash. Had also been Blondie's fan club head as well as picking up 60s singles before that. Story I heard had him getting a Standells single signed by Blondie on their first meeting. Not sure how much sense that makes other than it being what was at hand.
I think Fromthearchives Gun Club entry may have a somewhat more complicated version of the band chronology including the Cyclones and the Red Lights. Red Lights had an ep released for Record Store Day last year. I think Cyclones was originally formed as a band for Pleasant German to front. Her current Podcast had pretty good episodes with Terry Graham and Kid Congo as individual guests. Terry Graham's book Punk Like Me is worth a read and hopefully Kid will have a memoir out shortly I think it's almost done.

PRESENTING ALL 12 SETS OF MUSIC HIS QUINTET RECORDED OVER 3 NIGHTS
AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER AS 8-CD & LIMITED-EDITION 12-LP ALL-ANALOG 180g VINYL SETS

Blue Note Records has announced a July 30 release date for Lee Morgan The Complete Live at the Lighthouse, an expansive collection that presents for the very first time all 12 sets of music the legendary trumpeter’s quintet with saxophonist Bennie Maupin, pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Jymie Merritt, and drummer Mickey Roker recorded during their historic engagement at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, California from July 10-12, 1970. Originally released 50 years ago in 1971 as a 2-LP set, and later expanded to a 3-CD set in 1996, this definitive edition produced by Zev Feldman and David Weiss will be available as an 8-CD set and a limited-edition 12-LP all-analog 180g vinyl set that encompasses 33 performances including more than 4 hours of previously unreleased music that lets the listener relive the experience of being in the club for every exhilarating moment. Watch the unboxing video here. A previously unreleased version of Mabern’s composition “The Beehive” from the 2nd set on Saturday, July 11 is available now to stream or download.

Both physical formats are accompanied by an enlightening booklet featuring new interviews with Bennie Maupin and the last extensive interview with Jymie Merritt before his passing last year; essays by Jeffery McMillan (author or Delightfulee: The Life and Music of Lee Morgan) and Michael Cuscuna; statements from Jack DeJohnette, Wallace Roney, Nicholas Payton, Charles Tolliver, Eddie Henderson, Dave Douglas, and others; previously unpublished photos by Joel Franklin and Lee Tanner; as well as a statement from Morgan’s family. The audio was mixed from the original ½” 4-track tapes by Steve Genewick at Capitol Studios with LP mastering by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and 180g vinyl manufactured at Record Technology Inc. (RTI) in Camarillo, California. CD mastering was done by Robert Vosgien at Capitol Studios.
Bennie Maupin, saxophonist
“Right from the beginning, we developed such a heart-to-heart connection with each other. I think that’s really reflected in what we did. It was just about being in the moment and capturing the moment, and we did that.”

Jymie Merritt, bassist
“In a sense, it is holy music. And that was the thing I felt throughout the performances at The Lighthouse, this was totally uncompromised music in terms of the way it went down.”

Don Was, President, Blue Note Records
“’Live at the Lighthouse’ probably gives us the clearest picture of where Lee Morgan was headed and, as such, is a record of monumental importance.”

Zev Feldman, producer
“‘Live at the Lighthouse’ is an all-time desert island disc for me and to be ushering in a complete edition of this magnitude—each set, night-by-night just like if you were at the club witnessing it live—is nothing short of a dream come true. This was one of the very first projects I wanted to pursue when I came to Blue Note. I had prior knowledge that there was 4-plus hours of unissued material sitting on the shelves, but I didn't realize how great it was until hearing it all. Just as these musicians worked to create a recording that would stand the test of time, we made every effort to create a package that would serve that legacy.”

2. The Crystalites – Bombshell

"Produced and apparently co-written by Derrick Harriott, 'John Jones' was released in 1968 on the Big shot label. With its unstoppable rhythm and its aggressive lyrics 'John Jones' was a major hit among the Skinhead subculture in the UK, its release on the popular Tighten Up series certainly helped the song becoming a cult track then and now. The Crystalites were Harriott's studio band and included very famous 60s Jamaican musicians e.g. Bongo Herman, Bongo Les, Boris Gardiner, Gladstone Anderson, Karl Bryan, Winston Wright among others. They were extremely productive between 1968 and 1974 recording four albums and countless singles. More specifically, they recorded many wild and awesome 'versions' of hit songs of that time e.g. 'John Jones', making 'Bombshell' easily the best choice for the B Side as it is indeed a special instrumental and an awesome cover." Hard too find a clean copy on 7" single, now's your limited chance..A Stone Cold Classic!!
