Since you asked - I don't personally care about this shit, and don't get why ppl come here to clown on her every time she does something mildly cringy (or is accused of something by association).
― stuck in the version layer (morrisp), Monday, 1 March 2021 18:39 (four years ago)
i understand. i love a lot of grimes' music. she's very often brilliant. i think people have been unduly harsh towards her, too. i wouldn't be in here to diss some shit i thought was just mildly cringy.
everything about this stunt grosses me out: the vaguely specified charitable committment, the lazy deviantart quality of the work, the blockchain gimmick. i don't get worked up about the politics of the art world very often, but this shit strikes me as deeply cynical and it disgusts me and i wonder if it's not almost a little evil.

NFTs are extremely embarrassing and every other musician who expresses interest in them should be clowned on just as much
― ufo, Monday, 1 March 2021 21:14 (four years ago)
Half of my twitter timeline is either musicians clowning on NFTs or Mat Dryhurst defending them

new all purpose headline to be used going forward for anything grimes-related:

my take is that NFTs are dumb in many ways, not the least of which is the giant energy suck that is crypto mining that underpins the transactionson the other hand, the “art” aspect pretty much cut out the middleman when it comes to artistic works as money laundering instrument and if anyone wants to get that money, have at it
― mh, Tuesday, 2 March 2021 13:06 (four years ago)
Art’s ugly, but the real joke is people paying for that shit.
A percentage of the proceeds from the WarNymph NFT sales will be donated to Carbon180, an NGO dedicated to reducing carbon emissions.

The part about energy consumption in this case is a fallacy, since these NFT's are hosted on the Ethereum blockchain which does many many many more things than just host NFT's. That would be the same as complaining about the energy usage of banks or Amazon Web Services.
― Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Tuesday, 2 March 2021 14:58 (four years ago)
why wouldn't you complain about those things?
― rob, Tuesday, 2 March 2021 14:59 (four years ago)

That would be the same as complaining about the energy usage of banks or Amazon Web Services.while some of the money dried up over the past four years, we institutionally incentivize companies to use “green” (quotes due to the credit-trading nature) energy. of the multiple reasons I live not far from multiple large data centers (not AWS but several of the other big names) is my state’s power grid is 40% wind energy and they can sign deals with the power company to say they’re sourcing 100% of their energy from windnearly all companies brag when their facilities are LEED certified. whether or not that helps in marketing, idk
― mh, Tuesday, 2 March 2021 15:31 (four years ago)
the other day I read about a LEED-certified detention centre for asylum seekers

I speak with some level of authority, as a person who used to work with/for ppl in the Ethereum foundation, that sarahell is correct and none of the current applications remotely justify this sort of energy consumption.

I think blockchain is good for small-scale things where the number of tokens needed and the number of transactions are both low. For instance, property records in a smaller city.
The issue is with consensus being a big issue with... idk, blockchain is terrible as used now and if you can get some tokens without mining just do it and cash out. Everyone should cash out on weird shit people trade, and as many people as possible, because shit is weird as hell out there
― mh, Wednesday, 3 March 2021 02:43 (four years ago)
basically any time I think about this for more than two minutes I go from pensive thoughts to "fuck it, cash out if you can get cash and never talk to me about blockchain again"
