such a gorgeous track, where everything really comes together on that album
everything's gonna be alright
― ufo, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 17:50 (three years ago) link
really where "it's his sade album" makes the most sense
oh lol i mistook it for "the twilite kid" but yeah "twilight" is amazing
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 17:53 (three years ago) link
I ended up voting The Twilite Kid higher than Twilight but I might have changed my mind on that in the last week since I sent in my ballot. Beautiful song.

Ah Brother Woodrow/Closing Prayer was my last cut, nice to see it here.

always seemed weird to me that gentlemen closes with a cover and an instrumental, but it's a gorgeous piece of music

hey sorry if someone else was gonna do it but i wanted to follow along live as the results came out so i created a playlist for the rollout:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3bn77iz1OB0NQ1MqfimVBg?si=b80f819597f54a51

ufo are you staying up all night in the dark to match times with us?
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 18:42 (three years ago) link
it really was just for nintendo's e3 show, being able to roll out some results at a time when the board is actually awake was just a bonus

aww
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 20:16 (three years ago) link
my issue with 1965 is that 'sweet son of a bitch', 'citi soleil' and 'john the baptist' are over-the-top bad to the point that i'm not willing to give 'the slide song' or 'neglekted' the benefit of the doubt. i mean, we get it: sex!
the horns are great tho
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 04:15 (three years ago) link
whaat "john the baptist" is fantastic
"sweet son of a bitch" is definitely terrible but it's a tiny interlude that's the most skippable thing in the world
― ufo, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 06:37 (three years ago) link
I hate to cross mookie, but I like both “John the Baptist” and “Citi Soleil,” and may have even voted for them as part of my selections from 1965, although the latter is in the same tradition of misspellings as David Johansen’s “Swaheto Woman.”

i remember listening to this for the first time and thinking wahhhh this doesn't sound like the afghan whigs but it sounds rad???? still true
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 June 2021 20:17 (three years ago) link
yeah it was a strange comeback single, not really being representative of the rest of the album, not the classic whigs sound, not quite its most accessible moment
but it's a solid song
― ufo, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 20:19 (three years ago) link

funnily enough, however, nothing from my ballot has showed up yet
the transition from country-tinged ballad to the blown out chorus with synth strings & electric piano is great, blackberry belle has such a cool sound overall

"crazy" is the first thing from my ballot to place, contains both the perfect guitar tone and my favorite whigs lyric ever:
so what's gonna happen to you now?therapythe pharmacy
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 June 2021 20:46 (three years ago) link
when i saw them in ~2018 i dont think they played anything from 1965. shame really.

beautiful song, voted for it. the only afghan whigs song that reminds me of the wrens.
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 16 June 2021 21:07 (three years ago) link
actually one of the new live songs the wrens did a while back was a dead ringer for a dulli number
― intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Wednesday, 16 June 2021 21:09 (three years ago) link
i was the no. 1 vote btw :D
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 June 2021 21:10 (three years ago) link
there's a lot of whigs songs that remind me of the wrens actually, they have a similar sort of soar to them. "crime scene part one" for instance has a pretty similar vibe as an opener as "happy". which was the new live wrens song that sounded like dulli?

this is just like a fairly average alt-rock song without much of the charm of their later stuff and of course a straight up terrible lyric dulli should be ashamed of
― ufo, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 21:13 (three years ago) link
hmm looks like "lost in the woods" is officially way too low
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 16 June 2021 21:13 (three years ago) link
honestly love the groove of "r*******"
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 June 2021 21:15 (three years ago) link
and the opening line
way worse song than "lost in the woods" though

another that's way too low, fantastic shimmering pop moment
the one weakness is lack of a strong bridge but they make up for that live by throwing "little red corvette" in there
