Think I was the only one to vote for Martin Eden.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 June 2021 14:46 (three years ago) link

it's a great song but I suspect the vote count was low because it feels so much (to me at least) like an intro in the context of the album. "Black out the windows / it's party time" definitely in contention for best/most Dulli line though obv

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 June 2021 17:03 (three years ago) link

yeah it's quite good but not quite as good as the other blackberry belle songs i voted for which generally do a similar thing

ufo, Saturday, 19 June 2021 17:07 (three years ago) link

Simon H otm about party time! LOL
I also want to shout out this lesser Twilight Singers song "Domani" that always sounded very quintessentially Dulli to me. Emotional swells in the chorus, talkin bout drugs & being high, a well-placed "yeah", it's just musically delicious in every way to me.

idk why there is an animated girl in the video + i apologize if this song has already been discussed. i just listened to it and got a little excited :)

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 19 June 2021 19:27 (three years ago) link

‘do you want to make party?’ very much the theme of the full-band 1965-era show i saw

mookieproof, Saturday, 19 June 2021 19:41 (three years ago) link

Finally listening to and enjoying “I’m a Soldier” and wondering who is the one person who voted for it.

Party at the mansion, y’all

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 June 2021 21:29 (three years ago) link

Looks like nobody voted for that one.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 June 2021 21:35 (three years ago) link

Hope it’s not too late to change my ballot

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 June 2021 21:41 (three years ago) link

xp I voted for I’m A Soldier! def a half-remembered/impressionistic vote as I remember being impressed by it when that Unbreakable comp came out - listening to it now maybe it feels a little like a collection of great bits that don’t totally cohere but I really dig the restrained tension of the intro and I still think it’s a cool tune

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Saturday, 19 June 2021 23:06 (three years ago) link

No worries. Feel like there are no wrong answers in this poll, at least in the upper reaches.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 June 2021 23:34 (three years ago) link

Should I still be listening after the poll is over?

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 20 June 2021 22:10 (three years ago) link

WIkipedia says when they toured the album they would interpolate the one song into the other.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 14:12 (three years ago) link

And I guess they did it later as well.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 14:18 (three years ago) link

they do that a lot! the other day i youtubed a live performance of Faded that started with I Can't Make You Love Me -- tbrrwu I heard the opening chords on the piano and my face literally exploded with tears, then the Bonnie Raitt song? Then more Faded? I felt like I had an ecstatic experience aka that's what the best Whigs shows felt like.

the soul, the screen, the smoke in between
the rise, the fall, the thrill
the first, the last, the sins of the past
the burn, the fade, the skin that you flayed

I think a lot of it's just time constraints, but I can be quite monomaniacal about bands - only really sticking to or only needing/able to handle a single record, maybe two or three at a push. What I love about the polls on here, among other things, is how they open up discographies and force one to listen to a wider range. Short version: this band, and offshoots eh?

This isn't any great revelation, but it strikes me that Dulli does quite a lot with not very much: particular rhythms, themes of betrayal and desperation, the endorphin rush of drugs and love and fucking, the vocal lines that complement those themes and don't venture a huge amount beyond 'baaayybeee, let me/can I/will you...' Which is his own kind of monomania and thank god for it.

Current top 10 would be something like:

Crime Scene Part One
Summer's Kiss
There's Been An Accident
When We Two Parted
Faded
Fountain and Fairfax
Candy Cane Crawl
Into the Street
Debonair
What Jail is Like

Good posts, Chinaski.

Planck Generation (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 July 2021 20:16 (two years ago) link

I've only heard Black Love, and only liked "Night by Candlelight" on that, which I see got no votes. Is there likely anything else in their work for me?

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 2 July 2021 20:20 (two years ago) link

Doubt it
