Finally listening to and enjoying “I’m a Soldier” and wondering who is the one person who voted for it.

Party at the mansion, y’all

Looks like nobody voted for that one.

Hope it’s not too late to change my ballot

xp I voted for I’m A Soldier! def a half-remembered/impressionistic vote as I remember being impressed by it when that Unbreakable comp came out - listening to it now maybe it feels a little like a collection of great bits that don’t totally cohere but I really dig the restrained tension of the intro and I still think it’s a cool tune

No worries. Feel like there are no wrong answers in this poll, at least in the upper reaches.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 June 2021 23:34 (three years ago) link

Should I still be listening after the poll is over?

WIkipedia says when they toured the album they would interpolate the one song into the other.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 14:12 (three years ago) link

And I guess they did it later as well.

they do that a lot! the other day i youtubed a live performance of Faded that started with I Can't Make You Love Me -- tbrrwu I heard the opening chords on the piano and my face literally exploded with tears, then the Bonnie Raitt song? Then more Faded? I felt like I had an ecstatic experience aka that's what the best Whigs shows felt like.

the soul, the screen, the smoke in between
the rise, the fall, the thrill
the first, the last, the sins of the past
the burn, the fade, the skin that you flayed

I think a lot of it's just time constraints, but I can be quite monomaniacal about bands - only really sticking to or only needing/able to handle a single record, maybe two or three at a push. What I love about the polls on here, among other things, is how they open up discographies and force one to listen to a wider range. Short version: this band, and offshoots eh?

This isn't any great revelation, but it strikes me that Dulli does quite a lot with not very much: particular rhythms, themes of betrayal and desperation, the endorphin rush of drugs and love and fucking, the vocal lines that complement those themes and don't venture a huge amount beyond 'baaayybeee, let me/can I/will you...' Which is his own kind of monomania and thank god for it.

Current top 10 would be something like:

Crime Scene Part One
Summer's Kiss
There's Been An Accident
When We Two Parted
Faded
Fountain and Fairfax
Candy Cane Crawl
Into the Street
Debonair
What Jail is Like

Good posts, Chinaski.

I've only heard Black Love, and only liked "Night by Candlelight" on that, which I see got no votes. Is there likely anything else in their work for me?

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 2 July 2021 20:20 (two years ago) link

Doubt it
