Isn’t Anything ISN’T ANYTHING to write home about! Hyuk hyuk, oh that was a good one!

Isn't Anything is better than Loveless.

And Mainliner - Imaginative Plane is better than both.

toxic psycho "gifted child" asshole (RobbiePires), Wednesday, 10 November 2021 09:20 (three years ago)

has there been a poll on Isn't Anything vs Loveless? I would also vote for the former.

xpost “prog house is boring music for boring people” is hardly a controversial opinion?

At this point I’m more interested in hearing someone passionately defending it. But to be clear, I am not that person.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 09:27 (three years ago)

i also think those kinds of lists are really harmful and destructive.

explain please

Yes, it's boring because it doesn't live up to its progressive rhetoric. It should be the prog rock of dance music with tempo/key/time signature changes all eventually resolving to an ultimate, grandiose 4/4 at various tempos, but instead its more like the English version of jam bands. just noodling.

Symphonic house, now there's a thought. Does it exist?

toxic psycho "gifted child" asshole (RobbiePires), Wednesday, 10 November 2021 12:42 (three years ago)

basically simon should have demanded this in Energy Flash. Show us, where are ya?

toxic psycho "gifted child" asshole (RobbiePires), Wednesday, 10 November 2021 12:46 (three years ago)

dance music with tempo/key/time signature changes does not work as dance music, because nobody can dance to it.

That said, out of tempo, time sig and keychanges, one of these things is not like the others wrt dancing, unless admittedly like most of ILM a surfeit of melodic invention brings you out in a rash

Objectively and historically and scientifically wrong in any case, so quit with the patronising. Although this doesn't have key changes, but that would hardly be a problem for our future progressive dance epics.

Yes, it's boring because it doesn't live up to its progressive rhetoric.

Prog house not being all that progressive yeah that's clear but then again lots of genres got their name early on and ended up somewhere completely elsewhere - IDM very quickly ended up very much not "dance music", etc. If they had called it deep groove instead or something similarly accurate, it'd still be just as boring, but few people would make this big "progressive? ha!" deal about it.

It should be the prog rock of dance music with tempo/key/time signature changes all eventually resolving to an ultimate, grandiose 4/4 at various tempos

Well there's the whole psy angle - Shpongle, Younger Brother & all. Hard to make that work in the context of a DJ set though, which is what 99% of dance music is produced for.

I'm counting four tempo changes in this one:

Siegbran, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 14:47 (three years ago)

"in the context of a DJ set for a dancefloor" I should probably say.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 14:51 (three years ago)

I find the extremely specific genre names under the electronic and metal umbrellas silly.

Evan, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 14:52 (three years ago)

of course it's silly, but at least it's fairly helpful for picking what club night to go to.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 14:55 (three years ago)

IDM is at least amusing though, as you can just pretend the phonetic way a speech synthesiser pronounces it, 'ihdm', is its own, made up word.

As for dj sets, this shouldn't be an excuse but then again the dance music industry is hopelessly anachronistic — still using cdjs (got to be a CIA psyop, surely?) when you can have 4-6 deck hooligan plunderphonics meltdowns on virtual dj, why would you choose to remain hopelessly out of date? At least in the 90s using an outdated format was born out of necessity, today it's just rave grandad-ism, which is fine and all, but at least own up to it rather than the pseudo-spiritual tosh of dj sets being some kind of amazonian shamanic ritual — they are rituals alright, but for sinners, and certainly not for noble or religious purposes. Structure - We are Structure and we will blow your mind out like a fuse on 303s.

I find the extremely specific genre names under the electronic and metal umbrellas silly.

It can be fun to mix them. Death trance acid. Hard black glam. Industrial hair.

Personal note: I pretty much noped out in 1995 when I encountered earnest gatekeeping about the boundaries of vegancore.

There should be more genres based on diet tho: ovo-lacto-disco. paleo ska. Etc.

actually, it's "in which we're livin'." (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 10 November 2021 15:14 (three years ago)

I like that, I'll start to pronounce it 'iddim.

4-6 deck organized chaos will probably happen, but not by human dj's

I like making lists in my mind, and I don't even know why. It's not that I think the lists have much value, it's just the kind of exercise that my brain likes as a thinking prompt.

xp please rank your 5 favorite Donald Duck comics!

I definitely would like more dance music that changes tempo/key and that. Don't see why not and don't agree you wouldn't be able to dance to it. Plenty of tunes switch up/down partway through

Along with the debut EP It’s the only one I care to listen to beginning to end.
