I don't really like the brownish tortise on anything but the reddish is my favorite on the Fender 50s bright colors - sonic blue, fiesta red, shell pink, etc.

yeah I really like their models, they have a classic feel, doesn't feel like they are trying too hard to be wacky but at the same time they aren't just slight variations on strats and teles with premium hardware and woods.

there had been some interest in revstars upthread, found this one if anyone is interested, these look to have replacement pups (seymour duncan? can't quite see) but something about this finish, the black pickguard, and the zebra pups really looks nice to me (i've seen the same model with traditional chrome pickup covers and i like this better)

My first guitar was my stepfather's OO, I sold it when I was 21 or so for the Lowden (the Martin wasn't so playable), but then in 2015 I came upon a 1936 O at a guitar shop in Santa Monica and it was thousands of dollars but it sounded so good and my partner agreed and he had a rare moment of "encouraging me to buy gear" and since then it's been my staple studio guitar

I played it on a session at Magic Shop before it shut down and the engineer Kabir Herndon said from the control room "uh that is the most beautiful sounding acoustic I've ever heard"

A friend is a professional oboist and I said something once about a guitar being expensive - like 'thousands of dollars' expensive - and she laughed at my concept of expensive.

yeah my good friend who majored in classical double bass performance and now teaches jr. high orchestra has one his parents got him way back in the day, they had bought his sister a decent car and he opted for the double bass which cost as much as his sister's car

Over the past twenty years, the "box made in China, instrument finished domestically" assembly-line model has become more accepted for orchestral string instruments. Generally, new instruments are of much higher quality and are cheaper than they used to be. Also, modern violas in general are typically better quality than historical violas due to small-but-significant improvements in their construction. I don't know if the same is true for double basses but I'd assume it is also true

I want to say that in 2000 my friend who got a full ride music scholarship paid... $12k for a trombone? It was a number that blew my mind but it was pretty much the requirement if he was going to study the instrument.

I think my friend's double bass is Czech (? maybe, def Eastern European) late 1800s, he had to have it disassembled and reglued a while back, insured for 25k iirc

When I bought the Guild S-300 I fully expected to hate the pickups (late-70s Seymour Duncan humbuckers), and I was right. They’re not objectively terrible, but they’re not anything like what I need.

I got such a good deal on the guitar I don’t mind spending kinda stupid money on the pickups. My amp is very full-voiced & midrangey & I think something that has a scooped-midrange sound would be a good compliment. I’m really leaning toward the Lollar gold foils.

Friggin demos, maaan. These guys make everything sound good. (Andy from pro guitar shop has sold me so many terrible pedals because he has a particular genius for bringing out the absolute best in them.) My playing is … er … not on that level, obv, & my results will be … different from these monsters’.

If they're full sized humbuckers I'd look at something like a big Firebird pickup - gold foils are pretty midrangey to me, if you want more scooped Firebirds sound like big single coils.
