You seem nice so I'll be honest
And I'm gonna speak for everyone here and say
In the most constructive way possible
That you suck at posting

William Carlos Williams?

most of my favorite singers are objectively bad, I like being conned.

what kind of con is it when a "good" singer makes terrible music?

another music opinion that isn't really controversial at all but i don't love-love william orbit, tho 'ray of light' is good.

thx for the psychoanalysis, but there is very little anger in my posts. confidence ≠ anger.

sorry if my fucking shitty language makes it sound like i'm angry. that's just the goddamn way i talk, consarnit.

okay, that was too far. i apologize for resorting to nineteenth century profanity. completely out of line.

alfred, if the world is truly at its end at least we can both close our eyes one last time with the knowledge that we were happy doing the things that we did. next round's on me.

you guys are fun.

william orbit is both dated but still Largely Good imo, he will continue to be mined for influence

imago, Monday, 31 January 2022 17:57 (two years ago) link

one final thought: i think it's cool that madonna liked to mock organized religion. grifters taking on the even bigger grifters is always a good show to watch.

and again: i'm sorry if my communication style is offputting. it's not intended that way whatsoever. i'm a very smart alec-y, smarmy person in general, but i post with a natural smile on my face 95% of the time. this is a discussion forum and you guys are genuinely a billion times more intelligent than i'll ever be. i really do enjoy reading ever word. thank you for indulging me.

(unless you're saying i'm an asshole for my music preferences. that's kinda lame, but i like john klemmer so maybe i deserve it.)

would you say that Madonna is an abuser for gaslighting us into liking her songs?

so here's the wrap-up thought after rereading and how i shall leave it for now—

if there's such a thing as a "good tyrant" then surely there can be such a thing as a "good grifter." obviously not a compliment from my perspective, but hey, ymmv. i will say this: i applaud her, just in general terms, of her acceptance of lgbtq+ people. never have liked her music and probably never will; certainly don't abjure or judge anyone who does (in the end, you all love music, i'm told).

Grace Jones has an okay voice, but the presence of a deity.

There’s some kind of amazing story that August Kleinzahler tells of walking around with Allen Ginsberg and crossing paths with Grace Jones.

Crap flutist. Didn’t take advantage of CPE Bach’s composing strengths.

I admit I'm lolling a little at "post a controversial music opinion (unless it's about Madonna, in which case keep that shit to yourself)"

castanuts (DJP), Monday, 31 January 2022 22:39 (two years ago) link

Madonna is a bad singer a great pop star a great icon and has great songs in her toolkit I mean I'm not even a big fan but this is nonsense

XP I'd counter by questioning your knowledge of eg Irish country music but let me be real

I would not be helping any argument id be trying to make by relying on Irish country music

Taylor Swift's music is awful

raven, Tuesday, 1 February 2022 10:49 (two years ago) link

agreed. is taylor also a "good grifter"?

get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:14 (two years ago) link

when you think about it talent is sort of the ultimate grift

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:15 (two years ago) link

I really don't get this grift angle. Different people like different things, it's not a scam. If you pay money for a Taylor Swift song, you get that song either way, good or bad.

"i'm fine with being duped"

― get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Monday, January 31, 2022 6:58 AM

and that's okay. but don't get mad at me for saying something like: yeah, people like ts and madonna are talented, but not musically talented (or: their strongpoints lie outside of making music).

get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:23 (two years ago) link

there's nothing wrong with saying that, but I wouldn't call it a grift.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:27 (two years ago) link

Really curious how you define "musically talented" in a way that excludes Taylor Swift. I am not in any way a fan, but to deny that she's good at making music seems to have no basis in commonly accepted definitions of terms.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:28 (two years ago) link

people like ts and madonna are talented, but not musically talented

This is, without question, one of the top 5 dumbest things I've ever read on this site.

And that even takes into account the bizarre insistence that Madonna and Taylor Swift are somehow "grifters".

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:32 (two years ago) link

also, for levity and balance: i think brandy's first album is better than anything madonna or ts have ever done or will ever do.

You've posted a lot of twaddle in the last 24 hours, but this is the first offensive thing you've posted. You might as well have said they're girls, so what do they know about serious music.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:36 (two years ago) link

With the caveat that I'm only a part-time rap listener who goes through a hip-hop phase every few years at most, my controp is thus:

One thing that always baffles me is the popularity of Notorious B.I.G. and Ready to Die in particular. His voice is dull - like, so flat that his words barely make it into my ear. I don't understand why Ready to Die is so often ranked as the greatest rap album of all time or even of 1994 - I'd rather listen to the debuts from Beatnuts, Keith Murray, or Nas.
