I really don't get this grift angle. Different people like different things, it's not a scam. If you pay money for a Taylor Swift song, you get that song either way, good or bad.

With the caveat that I'm only a part-time rap listener who goes through a hip-hop phase every few years at most, my controp is thus:

One thing that always baffles me is the popularity of Notorious B.I.G. and Ready to Die in particular. His voice is dull - like, so flat that his words barely make it into my ear. I don't understand why Ready to Die is so often ranked as the greatest rap album of all time or even of 1994 - I'd rather listen to the debuts from Beatnuts, Keith Murray, or Nas.

I think it's totally possible to have a non-crazy definition of "good at making music" that excludes Taylor Swift fwiw, unless you literally mean that she is objectively able to create and release a lot of music in numerical terms.

oh i think you're overreacting, friend. i like plenty of "music for teenage girls" and the reason i put it in such a way is to illustrate that i haven't lost the plot. it's my fault for not "getting it" because i'm really not the intended target. doesn't mean i can't say, "wow this song is trash" if that's how i feel.

Doesn't help that it's a false statement. Swift's appeal is very broad

for starters these artists do not make "music for teenage girls"
secondly, it is obviously derisive if you recognize that singling out the age and gender of the audience results in a dismissal of the music as "a grift"

So it's very interesting that you have never before encountered this rhetorical trope, or parsed its not-too-carefully-hidden meaning.
