XP I'd counter by questioning your knowledge of eg Irish country music but let me be real

I would not be helping any argument id be trying to make by relying on Irish country music

Taylor Swift's music is awful

agreed. is taylor also a "good grifter"?

when you think about it talent is sort of the ultimate grift

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:15 (three years ago)

I really don't get this grift angle. Different people like different things, it's not a scam. If you pay money for a Taylor Swift song, you get that song either way, good or bad.

and that's okay. but don't get mad at me for saying something like: yeah, people like ts and madonna are talented, but not musically talented (or: their strongpoints lie outside of making music).

get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:23 (three years ago)

there's nothing wrong with saying that, but I wouldn't call it a grift.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:27 (three years ago)

Really curious how you define "musically talented" in a way that excludes Taylor Swift. I am not in any way a fan, but to deny that she's good at making music seems to have no basis in commonly accepted definitions of terms.

This is, without question, one of the top 5 dumbest things I've ever read on this site.

And that even takes into account the bizarre insistence that Madonna and Taylor Swift are somehow "grifters".

also, for levity and balance: i think brandy's first album is better than anything madonna or ts have ever done or will ever do.

You've posted a lot of twaddle in the last 24 hours, but this is the first offensive thing you've posted. You might as well have said they're girls, so what do they know about serious music.

With the caveat that I'm only a part-time rap listener who goes through a hip-hop phase every few years at most, my controp is thus:

One thing that always baffles me is the popularity of Notorious B.I.G. and Ready to Die in particular. His voice is dull - like, so flat that his words barely make it into my ear. I don't understand why Ready to Die is so often ranked as the greatest rap album of all time or even of 1994 - I'd rather listen to the debuts from Beatnuts, Keith Murray, or Nas.

i'm sorry, what hole exactly?

and misogyny??? from where? nothing about my dislike of any of these folks has anything to do with gender.

(okay, maybe so in the case of rolling stones and the like. that sort of toxic masculinity is way worse than anything madonna ever did.)

Austin, isn’t this all just the teen attitude “things I like rule, things I’m not into suck and I’ve got to shit on all of them”

There’s a teen attitude at play here and it’s not Madonna listeners imo

mh, Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:45 (three years ago)

isn’t this all just the teen attitude “things I like rule, things I’m not into suck and I’ve got to shit on all of them"

It seems even dumber than that. It really seems like the reflexive spouting of someone who's never actually thought about any of the things they supposedly believe.

I think it's totally possible to have a non-crazy definition of "good at making music" that excludes Taylor Swift fwiw, unless you literally mean that she is objectively able to create and release a lot of music in numerical terms.

The sensual shock (Sund4r), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:50 (three years ago)

I miss the times when controversial music opinions were just “the beatles were better with fake paul”

mh, Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:54 (three years ago)

so because i think madonna is a grifter, whose hustle i respect but whose music i find abysmal, i am:

-an asshole
-immature
-a misognyist (?)
-"even dumber than that"

there's plenty of music i don't actually like but that i will respect as well made. but that's not very interesting discussion, is it?

fwiw: janet jackson is also someone i would consider to be a "good grifter" and i'm a huge fan of her music.

I admit I'm lolling a little at "post a controversial music opinion (unless it's about Madonna, in which case keep that shit to yourself)"

The problem is your command of English combined with your obtuseness and self-pity.

I’m not a stranger to people misinterpreting my words after I kind of slyly use words with negative connotations in a positive way, but if so many people are taking issue with it, prob not a time to double down and construct a framework to justify yr stances imo

mh, Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:57 (three years ago)

I don't know about "asshole", but "enh, i mean it's music for teenage girls so what do i know?" is definitely a misogynistic statement and if you can't see why or how, then I can't really help you. I also question your understanding of what the word "grifter" means.

oh i think you're overreacting, friend. i like plenty of "music for teenage girls" and the reason i put it in such a way is to illustrate that i haven't lost the plot. it's my fault for not "getting it" because i'm really not the intended target. doesn't mean i can't say, "wow this song is trash" if that's how i feel.

again: the point here is not to upset. i'm just tired of "the canon."

thanks for reading.

enh, i mean it's music for teenage girls so what do i know?

really don't see how this is 'obviously derisive'? derisive would be just saying 'I don't like this ergo it sucks', I read 'it's music for teenage girls so what do i know?' as implying that music for teen girls is as valid as music for any other demographic?

soref, Tuesday, 1 February 2022 17:15 (three years ago)

Doesn't help that it's a false statement. Swift's appeal is very broad

False Pretenses Lad (morrisp), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 17:19 (three years ago)

for starters these artists do not make "music for teenage girls"
secondly, it is obviously derisive if you recognize that singling out the age and gender of the audience results in a dismissal of the music as "a grift"
it's very obviously derisive imo

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 17:19 (three years ago)

I read 'it's music for teenage girls so what do i know?' as implying that music for teen girls is as valid as music for any other demographic?

That's very interesting, because no one in the history of written English has ever written "[art form] is for [audience that does not include me]" and meant it in a non-derisive manner. So it's very interesting that you have never before encountered this rhetorical trope, or parsed its not-too-carefully-hidden meaning.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 17:20 (three years ago)

there is OBVIOUSLY no such thing as "music for girls" come the fuck on

rob, Tuesday, 1 February 2022 17:21 (three years ago)

"It's music for teenage girls so who cares" is the derisive version of that statement.
Austin has already been convicted of misdeeds so anything he writes is going to be given the most uncharitable interpretation possible.
