here to say i also hate the gentle giant singer's voice !
― kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 10 February 2022 20:04 (three years ago)
GG singers are endurable for me without being enjoyable, unlike say Ian Anderson who I can't abide after about 1972.
― The White Hot Stamper With Issues (Matt #2), Thursday, 10 February 2022 20:07 (three years ago)
Robert Wyatt is a musical genius and one of the finest songwriters that's ever lived, but his twee whimsical Englishman voice can sometimes grate on me over the duration of an album.
Had to admit to myself in the end that this is my opinion too, sorry St Robert.
― The White Hot Stamper With Issues (Matt #2), Thursday, 10 February 2022 20:08 (three years ago)
getting pretty annoyed at the existence of steely dan lately. sometimes because you can doesn't mean you should. i go through phases with them. sometimes their records are okay, sometimes i hate them because ugh yuck what am i listening to. i've never thought of them as anything more than tolerable and even their best songs as second or third tier competitors to their peers.
― get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Sunday, 20 February 2022 18:27 (three years ago)
I don’t think being ambivalent to Steely Dan is particularly controversial?
― punching the clock on a tambo (morrisp), Sunday, 20 February 2022 19:06 (three years ago)
who are Steely Dan's peers? not peerless in the sense they are greater than every other 70s band but they are pretty unique in the classic rock canon. maybe Boz Skaggs?
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 20 February 2022 19:27 (three years ago)
i'm using peers in a very general way here: anybody who released a record that made any chart in the 70s is a peer of anyone else who released a record that made any chart in the 70s.
― get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Sunday, 20 February 2022 20:21 (three years ago)
So even their best songs are second or third tier competitors to… any song that made any chart? I take it back, that is controversial

for all steely dan ever broke through here i couldn't call them in any way unique, notably they just sound like a mix of other bands on an off day (thin lizzy playing a toto album track but without any real interest)
― Ár an broc a mhic (darraghmac), Wednesday, 23 February 2022 00:41 (three years ago)
I bet you could approximate any band with a linear combination of all other bands. I bet glenn is doing it...right now.

Axl Rose was never as impressive a singer as some people may want you to believe.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 February 2022 01:26 (three years ago)
Cool, so he can sing five octaves... his tone for half of it still sounds like shit to me.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 23 February 2022 01:29 (three years ago)
I liked Guns N Roses better when they were called Aerosmith.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 23 February 2022 01:33 (three years ago)
Didja ever hear the Axl parody on the first Bloodhound Gang album? The track is called "Shitty Record Offer"… it’s pretty funny
― Not Dork Yet (alternate toke) (morrisp), Wednesday, 23 February 2022 02:21 (three years ago)
LOL. When the Village Voice temporarily showed scans of the original newspaper pages for every Pazz & Jop poll, Glenn Kenny submitted this joke for the 1988 poll's comments section: "How many members of Guns N' Roses does it take to screw in a light bulb?" "F*** you! Suck my ****!"
― birdistheword, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 04:34 (three years ago)

just like i'm sure that the sky is blue and water is wet, i'm very sure that axl rose is a muppet. please reference the miss piggy-esque yowls heard on "knockin on heaven's door." remember some years back when somebody posted the isolated vocals of a van halen song? i need the axl rose ones for that song in my life.
― get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Wednesday, 23 February 2022 18:53 (three years ago)
Most vocal coaches actually shit on Axl's technique. He's a baritone who came up with a screechy falsetto that fit the sleazy nature of their music. I love his vocals, but he's a good bad singer IMO

the isolated vocals of a van halen song

Rabies is the best Skinny Puppy album.

― castanuts (DJP), Monday, 28 February 2022 17:46 (three years ago)
Fans know Rabies wasn't a true SP album. The Process... now that would probably raise some eyebrows.
― beard papa, Monday, 28 February 2022 17:52 (three years ago)
I'm not saying it's better than their other work by a huge margin...but it's appreciably better. The songs are hookier, the guitars work really well in context...it's a really good record. Once upon a time, Al Jourgensen had really good pop instincts, and he brought them to that project.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 28 February 2022 17:59 (three years ago)
With Jourgensen on board, I'm surprised it wasn't called "Rabies Home Journal" or something
