Every record we release on Deewee is special to us because they’re born out of our genuine friendships with the artists but we have to admit we feel a little extra pride to see Charlotte & Bolis, two individual great talents and human beings - whom we’ve had the pleasure to introduce to each other literally within the walls of our studio - grow into this powerful duo and see their debut album TOPICAL DANCER which we made with them over the course of the last few years, come out today

Damn this is great

As noted in the 77, I think these guys are some of the most vital and enjoyable artists making pop music right now
― i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Friday, 4 March 2022 15:45 (two years ago) link
Their songs are outrageously, baldly political protest music with intelligent and clever lyrics and yet they’re also all bangers. The degree of difficulty there is super high.

I find the humour and personality of this does so much more for me than the straightforward didacticism of eg Sault

I have had this on repeat, loving the punchy sparse production and as mentioned earlier, there are some great witty lyrics in there. Favourite album of the year so far.

"Blenda" is an ear worm, eh?
― So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 March 2022 16:26 (two years ago) link
Dangerously so - since hearing it in the top 77 tracks playlist I’ve found myself singing it to myself. Out of context, randomly singing ‘go back to the country where you come from’ and nothing else is a problem waiting to happen. Damn catchy political bangers.

Loved this on first listen, the singles make much more sense in the context of the album. This is super stylish and cynical, could be the soundtrack to some high fashion runway.

just realized "Bear With Me" isn't on here.

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/mar/08/charlotte-adigery-and-bolis-pupul-interview?CMP=twt_a-music_b-gdnmusicNice interview. Didn't know that Pupul was Kamagurka's son! (a factoid probably lost on people outside of Belgium/The Netherlands)

this really holds up to a second listen, incredibly strong album. the lyrical games it plays are both straightforwardly witty and headspinningly complex; it's rare and great to see this sort of intelligence applied to, essentially, techno bangers. but then again the bangers themselves aren't so simple either; they're playful, tuneful and the production and structures are kept constantly interesting and fresh. wheels are not allowed to spin.
this'd make for a great ilm aoty, if That Lot decide to votesplit themselves

Rough Trade's release (is on transparent vinyl and) comes with a bonus CDR w/ Bear With Me and five tracks from her two earlier EPs

Finally got 'round to this - loved it, and hit replay the minute it stopped. Truly inventive and off-kilter dance music with no shortage of earworm melodies, big beats, and creative flourishes. Love how many different ways they use vocals! A+ sequencing, too.

Lots of highlights that I keep coming back to. "Ceci n'est pas un cliche" and "Mantra" stand out -- the latter gives me New Order vibes.

I finally figured out what this record reminds me of and had to bring it here cause no one outside ilm would get the reference but the Lindstrom & Christabelle vibes are strong
― Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix), Thursday, 29 December 2022 14:36 (one year ago) link
One of the late listens of the year for me.
As I mentioned to the friend who urged me to hear it, it does a very, very savvy and charming way of expressing sentiments that pop music usually is too didactic when it wants to make the same points.
― The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 29 December 2022 15:18 (one year ago) link
live in Glasgow yesterday it felt like superstardom is in the post. It was in the top 5 wildest audience resctions I've ever seen, so much so that she was rendered speechless a couple of times by how loud the crowd were. Such a great performer (Bolis too).
― stirmonster, Monday, 8 May 2023 19:17 (one year ago) link
well-deserved - it was a fantastic show. I was concerned that I would be disappointed after seeing them in a tiny venue last year when they killed it and was wondering if they would manage to bring that energy to a massive festival tent but they really knocked it out of the park. Two of my pals had never heard them before and came away raving about how great it was. stirmonster the whole weekend was brilliant actually :)
― boxedjoy, Tuesday, 9 May 2023 07:53 (one year ago) link
also not to objectify anyone in a way but I spotted Bolis in the crowd dancing later on and he really is just an incredibly handsome man, they both just ooze star quality and charisma
― boxedjoy, Tuesday, 9 May 2023 07:55 (one year ago) link
They’ve been working hard to get there, they’ve been performing live pretty much every odd day.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 9 May 2023 16:02 (one year ago) link
The Bolis solo album is ace. Mix of deeper home listening cuts and full on club bangers like this onehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7E9ZsGrK5E

Saw Adigery and Pupul live the other night - really excellent. They're great and charismatic performers of course, but what really stood out was how propulsive and thumpy the arrangements were over big speakers in a live setting. The sense of dynamics, especially in the lead-in to what were effectively drops, was really kinetic. The vibe of the way the songs would move in between pop songs and dance tracks reminded me unexpectedly of the last two The Knife albums (not a point of comparison I would have thought of previously).
― Tim F, Friday, 15 March 2024 04:47 (six months ago) link
Yeah, they make the most sense live for sure, not that the recording are bad of course.
― Chewshabadoo, Friday, 15 March 2024 14:43 (six months ago) link
Man, really need to catch them at some point. Pretty sure they've played here and I missed it (though that could have been a festival date)
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 15 March 2024 14:49 (six months ago) link
saw them at Desert Daze in 2022, if that's what you're thinking of, was a great set, she was amazing live.
