two weeks pass...

a few I've been enjoying lately:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-zPI48JCEk

East Coast Love Affair - Chicago - an acid cover of the Roy Ayers 1983 single.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utTXvrPfzKs

Boys Noize & ABRA - Affection (Playgroup Back 2 89 Remix) - as the title suggests, this is a freestyle homage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2FxgliqpTU

X-COAST - XTC V - 90's handbag revivalism complete with familiar samples.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5QzeLfmtSE

Hidden Spheres - Euan 92 - uplifting piano chords over fake dreamy Italo-house.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GDNVaEM6XQ

rRoxymore - Midnight Shift - even on a label as "conventional" as Aus, this is still layered with queasy vocal samples and stuttered rhythms.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eXEZf91b-Q

Bella Boo - True Romance - feels like this year's "La Perla", wistful loved-up filtered-disco

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5c9zo9UW4E

Barnt - This Is For Decor Only - monolithic stompy business for the Ibiza big-rooms, but weird enough to be idiosyncratic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkpxZgpAgAc

Josh Caffé - Do You Want To Take Me Home? (Steffi & Virginia Remix) - driving sleazy house, splits the difference between Berghain and Robert Owens.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4blFDTi3YWg

Gramrcy - Gliding Again - 138bpm hard techno based on the best thirty seconds in My Bloody Valentine's "What You Want."

^ That's a great list. I'm all for "90s handbag revivalism"

Also that Fango - Elle Cang upthread is wonderful

because i’m old, i didn’t like it, which is a rather salty way of admitting i couldn’t connect with the music. but as a dj his energy is infectious and undeniable, and it was especially impressive how he handled the few hiccups. above all, it’s an important reminder that (in a club setting anyway) “good” music and good dj’ing don’t mean a whole lot compared to the undeniable power of a totally up-for-it crowd

Fred Again.. seems on paper like someone whose music would be right up my street but every time I try it just leaves me indifferent. As tlg says though, that crowd are loving it and it's nice to see a Boiler Room that feels like an actual room and not just a festival tent.

Hidden Spheres - Euan 92 - uplifting piano chords over fake dreamy Italo-house.
love it

Lategreat: ah yeah agree somewhat. The music is not my usual cup of tea, just loved the energy of the set and the crowd. It’s been a minute since I last saw a boiler room where it felt like a party.

Knew I could rely on ILM for a genuine, snark-free response.

I'm just going to assume y'all really like sewing machines?

The Ghost Club, Saturday, 27 August 2022 20:00 (two years ago) link

afaict it's an old term first-gen british ilx came up with for for minimal / kompakt-y techno in the early to mid 2000s.

(grim) pump track (wales) (map), Saturday, 27 August 2022 20:05 (two years ago) link

pretty sure it's just old-ILM speak for "house/techno/etc track", or at least that's how i've always read it

xp

donna rouge, Saturday, 27 August 2022 20:06 (two years ago) link

now that there are < 10 dance music posters on ilm it doesn't really seem helpful to follow microgenre thread topics that closely or maybe i just don't care.

i wish we had a different name for house and techno threads but this one is somewhat adequate, i guess, if dated

(grim) pump track (wales) (map), Saturday, 27 August 2022 20:10 (two years ago) link

bobbins is used informally in brit-english as a synonym for nonsense, and i'm guessing it was originally used on ilx in that sense but in an affectionate way?

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Saturday, 27 August 2022 20:11 (two years ago) link

I'm just going to assume y'all really like sewing machines?

i seem to remember the music in the bobbins threads being compared to sewing machines early on but the detective search work required to verify that is beyond me.

(grim) pump track (wales) (map), Saturday, 27 August 2022 20:18 (two years ago) link

Interesting, thanks for your responses! I love that the term is hyper-specific to ILM. It's like a secret code language.

Anyways, sorry for the interruption. Back to the bobbins!

thing is, I knew I could rely on ILM to follow up my (snark-free, I swear!) non sequiturs with some solid info

big movers, hot steppers + long shaker intros (breastcrawl), Saturday, 27 August 2022 20:47 (two years ago) link

It refers to bobbin' ya head?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 27 August 2022 20:53 (two years ago) link

I’ve always understood that bobbins are something for literally rolling thread, and this was the rolling thread for house/techno. Originally there was “minimal house bobbins” and “electro house bobbins” so I don’t think it was meant to describe a specific sound, but in the mid 00s we talked about kompakt-y techno (and the like) incessantly there, so the association stuck, though not by design, I don’t think.

ed.b, Saturday, 27 August 2022 22:27 (two years ago) link

i’m an american, been around since it first “dropped”, and this never did not make sense to me. although maybe i misunderstand it? i’d heard the expression “bits and bobs” a lot growing up (to mean a collection of random things) and always assumed “bobbins” was a particularly british version of that expression

There's a house or techno track from about ten years ago or so and there's a guy's voice on it that says something that sounds like 'bobbins bobbins bobbins bobbins'

Not sure if this helps

paolo, Sunday, 28 August 2022 07:49 (two years ago) link

thought we did this before and came to the conclusion bobbins are odds & ends

I’m no boffin though

Kinda feel this is a problem with house/techno and other electronic/dance adjacent genres. There’s very few discussion about it, it seems like it’s music designed not to be talked about lol.

Even on reddit which has 400+ million users I still haven’t found a decent subreddit for finding and discussing “bobbins”.

I miss the blog era. Those were the days were I could really rely on a handful of electronic focused blogs to discover amazing tracks.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 28 August 2022 16:21 (two years ago) link

i think part of the deal is that djs still rely on obscurity to establish reputations in the party industry

(grim) pump track (wales) (map), Sunday, 28 August 2022 16:37 (two years ago) link

what do you mean, map? you mean ppl build reputations by playing obscure tracks from unknown producers, so they keep tight-lipped about it?

don't worry moka, 90% or more of past music criticism about techno / house was garbage (including at least 99% of my ilx posts from the 00s) so not missing much ... looking back, it seems to match most music criticism from the internet age, which is to say writers doing cheap sociology based on broad assumptions about partygoers and listeners etc, enhanced by lack of actual knowledge or understanding of dj'ing, production, distribution networks, regional scenes, actual party culture, etc

the late great, Sunday, 28 August 2022 16:51 (two years ago) link

somewhat but i also don't think it's down to individual intent that much, it's just a part of how the industry has been built over the last few decades. a bunch of other factors play into it too, vinyl being a preferred format, class and exclusivity, etc.

lack of actual knowledge or understanding of dj'ing, production, distribution networks, regional scenes, actual party culture, etc

i would counter that the "actual" part of this doesn't exist. you either have it or you don't, there's no birds eye view of it, party culture exists wherever there are parties which is everywhere, it's by definition embedded / experienced. and it's very much shaped and gatekept by class. how authenticity discourse works in tandem with class is weird and interesting but i'd say that generally it "works better" when the producers / consumers in question are of a certain class or at a certain level of class.

just some random thoughts.
