gorgeous matt!!!

call all destroyer, Friday, 26 August 2022 00:03 (two years ago) link

Thank you! I feel richly rewarded, have wanted an 80s Jag for a LONG time and it's a fair bit better than the 90s one I had. The paint is pretty much immaculate under all the futz, and as a bonus I am carefully cleaning up the 1964 pickup which is too rich for my blood, the AVRI from my parts bin has plenty of Jaguar spank for my tastes.

Fender simply cannot stop itself from making ugly Joe Strummer signature guitars.

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 6 September 2022 22:20 (two years ago) link

I can't imagine Joe Strummer playing beautiful guitars

Mark G, Wednesday, 7 September 2022 17:20 (two years ago) link

That's a sweet Jaguar rebuild.

yeah very cool

Spottie, Wednesday, 7 September 2022 17:59 (two years ago) link

i finally got an sg. 08 metallic green standard with the robot tuners replaced with grovers. ebony fretboard. probably going to replace the pick guard with standard black.

Spottie, Wednesday, 7 September 2022 18:12 (two years ago) link

nice! omg i forgot about the gibson robot tuners.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 September 2022 19:47 (two years ago) link

my god spottie that is *the shit*
Hilarious that the vaunted robot tuners just happened to have the right drilling for folks to throw them away and go back to the right kind. That guy (Juskewicz?) seemed intent on tanking Gibson as fast as possible, thank goodness the folks making them were still doing it right.

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 7 September 2022 20:29 (two years ago) link

might look good with a cream pickguard too

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 7 September 2022 20:30 (two years ago) link

ooh yeah cream would be nice

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 September 2022 20:57 (two years ago) link

hadnt thought of cream! might look really good.

yeah the robot tuners lol what a disaster. its still got some of the wiring in the cavity and the weird robot knob so i gotta figure out what to do with everything cosmetically.

Spottie, Wednesday, 7 September 2022 21:36 (two years ago) link

I got a handheld robot tuner thing for Christmas one year. It worked (until I stepped on it) but it felt ridiculous to use.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 7 September 2022 22:52 (two years ago) link

it’s so funny that people don’t grasp that tuning a guitar is enjoyable

call all destroyer, Thursday, 8 September 2022 00:02 (two years ago) link

if you're gonna put that on anything it should be on cheap ass instruments for beginners

Spottie, Thursday, 8 September 2022 00:05 (two years ago) link

Agreed; pretty much no one who owns a $3,000 guitar is craving a shitty robot that will tune it badly.

Call all destroyer is right. When I love an instrument, tuning it is part of my relationship with it. And I don't want to own any instruments that I don't love. Life's too short.

Imagine an elite chef who doesn't want to own knives or slice anything. That person does not exist.

the floor is guava (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 8 September 2022 02:27 (two years ago) link

I say this in full awareness that I am susceptible to it, but I think a lot of gear marketing is based on "gig fantasy" - as if the middle aged greying dude buying it (i.e. me) will at some point be part of a gigging band and needs that robot tuner for a quick change to open G when we bust out the Stones cover.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 8 September 2022 02:45 (two years ago) link

you're not wrong but you also know that the baller move is to have a second guitar onstage tuned to open g

call all destroyer, Thursday, 8 September 2022 02:48 (two years ago) link

i mean my gigging career would impress absolutely no one but did i switch guitars at a VFW once in 2007 for one specific song? fuck yes i did.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 8 September 2022 02:50 (two years ago) link

I'm pretty sure the rules state that if you're the guitarist in a band you are *required* to have at least one song in the setlist that features a 12-string. Double bonus if the 12-string can also function as the alternate-tuning guitar. (fuck yeah electric-XII in drop D!)

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 8 September 2022 04:25 (two years ago) link

absolutely, it's why I have collected a couple of dozen guitars, when I go back to gigging (any day now, I'm only 52) I will be e.g. Ed O'Brien or someone like that.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 8 September 2022 08:04 (two years ago) link

I stopped by the shop again and someone was claiming they were going to go get a guitar to trade in toward the Guild D-55. So I put a deposit down on it and reserved it. So psyched to bring it home soon.

verra nice

two weeks pass...

I don't want/need another guitar, but after reading the leak about Fender's American Vintage II models I have to acknowledge that the AVII Jazzmaster in Lake Placid Blue w/block neck and matching headstock is something that I've wanted for years.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 26 September 2022 21:42 (two years ago) link

that’s the same color scheme as my jaguar. it’s pretty great.

call all destroyer, Monday, 26 September 2022 22:20 (two years ago) link

you better show us that

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 26 September 2022 22:45 (two years ago) link

I'm all set on guitars but if they did a Jaguar in that scheme I'd have to reconsider. The Jags and JMs are usually the same years and mostly the same colors so it could happen.

(also... Fender hear me out... a Jaguar just like that but with Wide Range Humbuckers)

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 26 September 2022 22:50 (two years ago) link

I bought a used Ovation electric and a used ESP dirt cheap, both fully stage-playable, just a few weeks ago in Pittsburgh. kinda goin bananas

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 27 September 2022 01:34 (two years ago) link

That Guild electric I bought, I’ve been using it with the stock late-70s hard-rock buckers and it’s not bad at all. Plenty of plinky-plink funk goodness with a compressor and the phase switch.

looks great! is that the one where you were getting some custom pickups for it?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 14:55 (two years ago) link

thanks! yeah those are Porter pickups, a custom set. The humbuckers are his standard PAFs but with the open top covers which were a custom order. the center one is a "T90" - basically a P90 that fits a telecaster neck pickup slot (that's what was originally there). there's a push/pull on the bottom knob that splits the coils on the humbuckers as well.

Dude this looks awesome

calstars, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 00:01 (two years ago) link

UMS if i can ask, how are the porter pickups and how was the process? i have a guitar where i could probably use some extra attention on how to improve the pickups and their ordering form and whole concept looks pretty interesting.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 00:48 (two years ago) link

ums great job on that Godin, it looks killer!

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 28 September 2022 12:28 (two years ago) link

thanks all for justifying all the money i wasted on this! it plays great, liked the neck from the very beginning. it's about as close to a "swiss army knife" guitar as i think i could get. all in, i think spent maybe $1100 on it? which i think it's too bad considering putting in the jazzmaster trem and the custom pickups

really great. i did the email form and the guy actually called me up to talk! we kind of went through the guitar and what i wanted and he made recommendations based on that (and the fact I wanted to coil split)

nice thing was that I really wanted those open top pickups but the PAFs didn't come like that, he made them with a different case for no extra charge. I think I paid $270 for the three? not bad considering. they sound great, loved dealing with the guy

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 September 2022 15:16 (two years ago) link

sounds great! i will definitely give that some thought.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 21:44 (two years ago) link

270 is great for three hand-made, custom spec pickups with a consultation! They look like superb quality too.

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 28 September 2022 23:01 (two years ago) link

They are great not 100% on the price but it felt like a good deal, I know he didn't charge me extra for the custom covers

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 September 2022 23:28 (two years ago) link

Considering Curtis Novak charges $180 for a humbucker you're getting similar attention to detail for half the cost, it seems to me.

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 28 September 2022 23:55 (two years ago) link

Oh man, finally sold a guitar and went and finished paying for/picked up the Guild D-55.

It is the best fucking acoustic I have ever played. Tone is unreal. It's also loud as hell - I have 13s on it and I can barely even hear myself sing over it if I play full strength.
