i revisited notes today. weird how every song on it is perfect
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, August 27, 2022 8:05 PM (two days ago)
it's a remarkable pop full length, no ifs ands or buts
pretty much everyone i know IRL who is a fan of them but not a this thread level stan usually respond in complete shock when i say that notes is their best album. from my interactions most ppl either just fully let this one pass them by or gave it a few listens and found it exhausting. which makes me think that they picked the perfect time to pare down and do a short, essentials style album.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 29 August 2022 18:44 (two years ago) link
I feel like the stans on this thread mostly are (and have been right from the start) quite invested in the whole “they can do anything” aspect of the band’s appeal, which Notes really leaned into, such that the album felt quite vindicating, almost as if it was specifically responding to and endorsing our enthusiasm.
My BF who has had to listen to a lot of The 1975 in the car is very much not that person. When I was playing “Happiness” he was like “I really liked this band’s first album, that was good. This sounds good too.”
― Tim F, Monday, 29 August 2022 18:53 (two years ago) link
funny, my bf could never stand them and now notes is the only he likes. i do think it hits specific genre points like shoegaze, country, garage, folk, soul that can appeal to a certain sorta listener. (i've made the point before that the album is sort of like record collector chic.) but the barrier for entry (caring about this band) is still a hurdle, there's no way he ever would've listened to it w/o me playing it in his presence.
for as much as you could (or we have) put 'i like it when you sleep' in the same bucket as sprawling wall splatter, in retrospect it feels like a completely natural outgrowth of album 1 and the EPs, leaning hard into 80s pop and then expanding a bit from within that (i.e. INXS rip offs, a bit more synth-pop in "somebody else"). i can see why one would not like that album for the same reasons they didn't like the previous music, but then find a way into notes. one of my biggest takeaways from relistening to all the albums recently is how tight 'i like it when you sleep' feels to me as an album now
― J0rdan S., Monday, 29 August 2022 19:08 (two years ago) link
seeing them at their Toronto stop and even if their new one is a clunker (you never know!), excited to see Notes songs live
― Murgatroid, Monday, 29 August 2022 20:46 (two years ago) link
i like it when you sleep was a real expansion of their sound and ambition at the time - some of it was a fairly natural increased focus on synths, but there was also "if i believe you", the title track, and "please be naked" into "lostmyhead". it's still my favourite, the sequencing has a very cinematic feel and there's not many other pop albums that go through a tunnel and come out the other side like it does
notes has a ton of their very best material but the sequencing is a total mess, i'd still put it at #2 but i never want to listen to it in sequence
― ufo, Monday, 29 August 2022 21:48 (two years ago) link
i think i characterised notes as undergoing a psychotic break around halfway through (or was it throughout) - it feels like an incredibly ambitious feat of deliberately-jarring sequencing and constant sabotage
― imago, Monday, 29 August 2022 21:54 (two years ago) link
the sequencing is actively hostile yeah
― ufo, Monday, 29 August 2022 21:55 (two years ago) link
I spend part of my time in a music listening world where The 1975 are reviled. I'm not one of them. I love their great songs. But I feel guilty that I'm in the minority here. To my ears they haven't recorded an album that isn't bloated with noodling instrumentals I'd as soon never hear again. But in the last nine years they've written at least a dozen songs better than any rock bands. So I keep trying.
― Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 29 August 2022 21:59 (two years ago) link
i guess the difference between soto and deep-space soto is that i find them much more compelling as an albums band than a singles band, and my interest in them is mostly an interest in the perverse architecture & sheer adventure of albums 2 and 4. i mean sure 'love it if we made it' is a wonderful bit of grandstanding and they have a few other banger singles, but
― imago, Monday, 29 August 2022 22:02 (two years ago) link
Looks like we need a poll.
― Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 29 August 2022 22:05 (two years ago) link
the first album doesn't have any extended instrumentals and i'd be a little surprised if the new one does
but again, managing to fit "please be naked" into "lostmyhead" in the middle of iliwys, to be in effect a 10 minute post-rock suite there, is part of what makes this band so great

matty just posted a new track on instagram that's not on the album - "loads of crisps"
https://www.reddit.com/r/the1975/comments/x1vy65/via_mattys_story_new_ep_of_demos_to_be_released/
some sort of demos comp might be on the way, but matty also says a lot of shit that doesn't eventuate because he changes plans so we'll see. no idea if "loads of crisps" is related to that at all

the way they're mixing/mastering this album is a bit of a hurdle for me, there's an openness and clarity of vocals in the live version of this that i'm missing. that having been said, it's a wonderful song and the bridge really makes it
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 1 September 2022 18:48 (two years ago) link
I liked the first two singles more but this one is still a pretty song

Love this new one even if (perhaps because?) it is doing nothing new - it feels like a tune from Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Mirage’.
― Tim F, Saturday, 3 September 2022 10:53 (two years ago) link
oh yes absolutely
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, 3 September 2022 13:34 (two years ago) link
Tim, I will always love you for hearing Fleetwood Mac's Mirage in the hum of car engines, the chirping of birds, and the rumbling of washing machines.

Heard the 1975 on the radio this morning, maybe for the first time, and interestingly enough it was on the broadly/blandly "eclectic" station. It was "Part of the Band" (introduced iirc as "breaking new ground for the 1975," because it was so "lush"), followed by songs by Zeppelin, the Strokes, etc. (This is the station that plays DMB *and* Wet Leg, Cheap Trick and Japanese Breakfast.) I guess it makes sense, because the 1975 could fit in almost anywhere, though also "Part of the Band" isn't particularly representative of the group, imo, so I wonder what people expecting more of the same might think of the album.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 8 September 2022 13:15 (two years ago) link
So wait, did Jack Antonoff produce the whole album, or have credits not been revealed yet?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 8 September 2022 13:18 (two years ago) link
iirc there was some indication that he didn't do every track? but full credits aren't out yet
― ufo, Thursday, 8 September 2022 13:23 (two years ago) link
I looked on Wiki, and at first I thought he had just produced the three singles so far, but then I noticed those were the only songs with production credits listed. Though curiously (or perhaps incompletely) Antonoff is *not* listed as a co-writer. There's that quote that was in the Pitchfork feature:
Healy also makes it clear that he’s always the one in full creative control—of production, songwriting, performances. “Everything the 1975 does, I write.” He laughs softly. “No one touches the lyrics.”
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 8 September 2022 13:30 (two years ago) link
the full writing credits are out, just not production credits. he doesn't have any writing credits

the band or Matty not sure are on the new episode of the How Long Gone podcast
trying to confirm whether it's the band or just Matty but i'm still at the long-winded intro
i do not get the appeal of the hosts or this popular-among-certain-circles podcast whatsoever
― Murgatroid, Thursday, 15 September 2022 20:40 (two years ago) link

How Long Gone achieving the previously unthinkable: making Matty Healy sound boring
great podcast
― Murgatroid, Thursday, 15 September 2022 21:25 (two years ago) link
ahah HLG as divisive as The 1975.
I think the pod is great but it takes a few eps to get a feel for their personalities and suss out when they're being serious or doing a bit/trolling.
I think Jason is a legitimately great host and interviewer. been following since his Tall Tales podcast, the best episodes of which were always 1 on 1s with Chris Black. long time coming.
