antonoff should make an album with swift that sounds like this

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 00:52 (two years ago) link

it's also like, the album antonoff has been trying to make his whole career lol

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 01:10 (two years ago) link

this record is great but it is quite weird to hear them play it straight (i.e. 11 songs, all "songs," no instrumentals, no electronic stuff, no real genre hopping)

alpine static, Friday, 14 October 2022 02:36 (two years ago) link

there's still a fair amount of variety within the bounds they set for themselves

"Looking For Somebody" and the last two songs are all-timers

Murgatroid, Friday, 14 October 2022 03:50 (two years ago) link

Out in the US even tho it's only 9 PM in Anaheim.

Bee OK, Friday, 14 October 2022 04:05 (two years ago) link

Looking for Somebody trades It’s Not Living’s smack for guns huh. what a smash

anza808, Friday, 14 October 2022 04:06 (two years ago) link

I'm only up to "Wintering" and I love this album. such lightness and space and joy in these songs, and hasn't really deviated from that sound yet. surprising how focused this album is given how sprawling the last several albums have been, but it's so cool to hear them go this way

Vinnie, Friday, 14 October 2022 04:18 (two years ago) link

yep, they stuck with that sound till the end, with a lot of variation within it. gorgeous amazing album, don't know how this band has kept up this level of consistency for a decade. is that FKA twigs again on "About You"? really lovely section

Vinnie, Friday, 14 October 2022 04:34 (two years ago) link

it's Adam Hann's wife, Carly Holt

Murgatroid, Friday, 14 October 2022 04:39 (two years ago) link

i don't like how they're just strumming the chorus of "part of the band" live instead of the fingerpicking on the studio version

my least favourite on the album is definitely "all i need to hear" which isn't even bad but they've done that exact song better a number of times before now - it has nothing on "if i believe you" for example.

"about you" is so good though, it's like someone introduced the blue nile to the ideas of shoegaze and saxophones

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 10:17 (two years ago) link

first impresh but this is my fav thing they've done since 'i like it when you sleep'. i know yall love the sprawling albums with all the interludes but i feel like i'm gonna get so much play out of this

flopson, Friday, 14 October 2022 10:33 (two years ago) link

yeah i agree, but iliwys was also sprawling with a bunch of interludes, it was just the best at it

a brief enquiry was basically just iliwys2 except somehow less consistent despite being shorter, and notes was an incoherent mess that nonetheless contained a whole lot of brilliance

this is the closest to all-killer-no-filler they've come

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 10:40 (two years ago) link

so far up to 'all i need to hear' which is definitely the worst track so far, along with 'part of the band', which cmon we don't need extra reminders who produced this

imago, Friday, 14 October 2022 10:42 (two years ago) link

largely enjoying the rest tho and yeah 'looking for somebody (to love)' is quite something

imago, Friday, 14 October 2022 10:42 (two years ago) link

"looking for somebody (to love)" is the most antonoff thing here though

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 10:48 (two years ago) link

*throws up hands* maybe I just don't like how he does strings

I didn't much like Human Too either - the slow songs not landing this time - but About You is great yeah, their OX4

imago, Friday, 14 October 2022 10:53 (two years ago) link

i love the strings on "part of the band". the idea was apparently to get them to sound like "street hassle"

"human too" is one of the weaker songs for sure but i like the approach to it better than "all i need to hear" at least

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 10:58 (two years ago) link

i liked about two-thirds of the album by your goddamn band lol cmon

i agree that Human Too works better than All I Need To Hear at least, there's a Neat Idea behind its sound at least even if it's a bit slight to pull it off fully

what makes LFS(TL) so good for me is all that mad background percussion burbling away like a barely-repressed memory, which...you cannot convince me that is anything other than the band's own idea

imago, Friday, 14 October 2022 11:03 (two years ago) link

Not sure if this has been posted

groovypanda, Friday, 14 October 2022 11:04 (two years ago) link

ok Part Of The Band better on second listen

imago, Friday, 14 October 2022 11:08 (two years ago) link

sorry, i didn't mean to come across however i did there, it's fine if you're not into "part of the band" (i love it though)

all that mad background percussion burbling away like a barely-repressed memory, which...you cannot convince me that is anything other than the band's own idea

oh yeah that bit rules. really it's an antonoff-y song in that it sounds so much like the sort of stuff he writes, like i wouldn't have at all been surprised if he had a co-write there. i don't think he's that distinctive of a producer really beyond being a little boring, he very much feeds off what his collaborators give him to work with. but i think he was a decent enough fit for what they were going for on this album, even if i still want that weirdo electronic album with bj burton to be finished some day

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 11:20 (two years ago) link

nah you were being v nice, i was being deliberately a bit obnoxious in true healyian spirit (and not my usual obnoxiousness ofc lol)

and yeah, the production here maybe isn't as delightfully fucked as it is in their best two albums (the sprawling ones), but it definitely doesn't feel like they've ironed out all the kinks, and they've managed to retain what makes them them. bj burton would be an amazing collaborator obv yes - they're really creative with rhythm textures already so it would be great to see how he pushed their guitar/synth textures

imago, Friday, 14 October 2022 11:25 (two years ago) link

btw i did just listen to OX4 again and it is indeed a good companion-piece to About You imho, beyond even the bassline similarities

imago, Friday, 14 October 2022 11:28 (two years ago) link

i love the strings on "part of the band". the idea was apparently to get them to sound like "street hassle"

True, but my first thought was of Lou Reed's "Street Hassle."

― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, July 7, 2022 9:08 PM (three months ago)

So I guess add Lou Reed to that long list of "things the 1975 reference or remind us of"

this is the interview where he confirms the reference point

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 11:52 (two years ago) link

I love this album but I'll always (probably) prefer sprawling, incoherent 1975 to concise 1975

give me the interludes, all of em

Murgatroid, Friday, 14 October 2022 11:52 (two years ago) link

ideally they'll do another album that's both sprawling and coherent

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 11:59 (two years ago) link

Double albums (in the Old Days) were meant to be inconsistent; that's their fun!

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 October 2022 12:01 (two years ago) link

being able to make a coherent double album is a rare talent though & not all are sequenced in as hostile a way as notes was

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 12:03 (two years ago) link

I like this album (my fifth or sixth play), though Healy's attempts at guilelessness sometimes ick me out (i.e. the line about kissing in the Target toy aisle in "About You").

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 October 2022 12:08 (two years ago) link

They should just release a bonus disc of interludes and goofs that fans can shuffle into the album at will. Or play at the same times, like "Zaireeka."

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 14 October 2022 12:14 (two years ago) link

Every time Healy sings the chorus of "Human Too" I expect Phil Oakey to chime in with "That's right!"

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 October 2022 12:39 (two years ago) link

turns out warren ellis (!) is to thank for turning "about you" into a shoegaze track

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 13:16 (two years ago) link

this album is kinda the anti-notes in every way and as a notes partisan it’s not my favorite 1975 project ever but it’s still a very good album on its own merits. “about you” is like an EP song played on “real” instruments (so, kind of a sequel to “you,” or possibly “me” and “you”… together…)

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 14 October 2022 13:32 (two years ago) link

the closer is fantastic, also, reminds me of when they played that countrified full band version of “be my mistake” live and i was like “this should’ve been the version on the record”

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 14 October 2022 13:34 (two years ago) link

i am like sorta hoping they ditch antonoff next time bc as fun as his imprint on them can be ("looking for somebody" such a perfect bleachers song it'll make the entire bleachers catalog unlistenable), idk, despite this record containing healy's best singing ever there's a cloudiness to the vocal production that i do not like and have trouble aligning with this band that makes good-sounding records

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 14 October 2022 13:37 (two years ago) link

healy’s been like “this is the real follow-up to a brief inquiry” and it certainly is

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 14 October 2022 13:41 (two years ago) link

i still quite like notes despite how messy it is, a bunch of their very best material is on it but it just doesn't make for a good listen to front-to-back.

"about you" most reminds me of "robbers" which is going for a similar "with or without you" thing just without the shoegaze

interestingly matty claims he did record a drive like i do ep as planned but he just didn't get around to finishing it before they got too into making bfiafl & one of the tracks originally intended for it was "pictures of us" which ended up on this year's beabadoobee album

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 13:41 (two years ago) link

yeah keeping antonoff around would be boring, they've done the 'live band all in a room' thing this time and he fit well for that but to stick to it would be regressive

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 13:43 (two years ago) link

i was kinda worried it would end up being that here but it didn't end up happening thankfully

ufo, Friday, 14 October 2022 13:45 (two years ago) link

not hitting my pleasure receptors in the way that notes, i like it or debut do. feels closest to a brief inquiry i guess, which left me similarly a bit colder/more distant, but also i am really enjoying it and think every song is great? the aspects of '1975ishness' that they've focused in on here just aren't my favourite versions of them. defo think the murkier vocal production contributes to that

"when we are together" is the one i am most immediately crushing on

uberweiss, Friday, 14 October 2022 18:30 (two years ago) link

but also i am really enjoying it and think every song is great?

yeah otm, can't stop listening to it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 14 October 2022 18:33 (two years ago) link

I have the usual trouble with their ballads but it's so damn brief.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 October 2022 18:35 (two years ago) link

it doesn't feel less complete for being brief, which was my primary worry

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 14 October 2022 18:43 (two years ago) link

Thoroughly enjoyed this on my first couple runs through. Only song I don't love is "Human Too," and even that is quite good relative to their other albums's low points.

Is this record unusually front-loaded for them? Sure feels like they stacked up the hits 2-6 where they've historically spaced them out and made you wade through the genre explorations.
