the "even more LCD" version of "The 1975" from BFIAFL

love this album so much
― flopson, Sunday, 30 October 2022 08:16 (two years ago) link
So do I. After the last one I was hoping they would push it further into the electronic/garage direction, and while the "four guys playing in a room" thing of this one is the exact opposite of that, it was absolutely the correct move. This one is pure joy and it just breezes by.
Kind of obsessed with how subtle the drum track on "Human Too" is--the ghostly tambourine (or hi-hat?) taps that flit in and out, the shaker that lifts up the last chorus.
― J. Sam, Sunday, 30 October 2022 22:54 (two years ago) link
These guys have always, against all odds, been great with sonic nuance and subtlety.

So is it true that the band - in North America, at least - will be "opening" for itself by playing the new album in full (in what would normally be the main support slot) and then playing a set of stuff from previous albums?
Has anyone else heard this?
― alpine static, Friday, 4 November 2022 01:19 (two years ago) link
feel like matty mentioned this in that interview posted earlier
― k3vin k., Friday, 4 November 2022 01:22 (two years ago) link
blackstarkids are opening for them. but he did say on IG that they had no “main support” whatever that means. the first show is happening as we speak so it won’t be a mystery for much longer
Black Star Kids are the only band playing with us on tour cos they are my favourite live band rn. And they play before us. And we play after. At 8.30. I don’t know how I managed to make this confusing https://t.co/WPhbtpkH1G— Matty (@MatthewTHealy) November 2, 2022

matty said stuff on instagram about them doing two sets, the first being the album in full,
― ufo, Friday, 4 November 2022 01:54 (two years ago) link
from what i’m seeing they don’t quite do the new album in full but the set is heavily front loaded with new songs before they go into older stuff
― J0rdan S., Friday, 4 November 2022 01:55 (two years ago) link
apparently they've promised to switch up the setlist every night
― ufo, Friday, 4 November 2022 02:02 (two years ago) link
their stage layout is a house this time
or at least a living room and a roof lol
― Murgatroid, Friday, 4 November 2022 02:17 (two years ago) link
review of tonight's setlist: they better play more from notes when i see them lol

I mean, that second set looks pretty great to me. These dudes know what their bangers are ... you could tell that on past tours, too.
― alpine static, Friday, 4 November 2022 04:28 (two years ago) link
fantastic show. super elaborate set and lighting, lots of cool choreography and blocking. crowd was bananas.
― adam, Friday, 4 November 2022 11:56 (two years ago) link
do you think they were thinking "what would david byrne do" with the set
― ufo, Friday, 4 November 2022 12:41 (two years ago) link
it was somehow less twee than that, like there was a lot of... interactivity and interplay between the set and lighting and band that gave it a narrative momentum that felt more sinister/funny than arch/whimsical
― adam, Friday, 4 November 2022 21:50 (two years ago) link
apparently Matty sat on the couch and smoked a cig at one point and it got the whole 1975 Reddit pregnant
― alpine static, Friday, 4 November 2022 21:55 (two years ago) link
Setlist looks great, all the songs I'd want to see from BFIAFL
Their episode of Tape Notes covering ABIIOR is definitely worth listening to. They go through some cool stems and demos, my favorite of which was a darker-sounding "It's Not Living". Would love to see them take that demo somewhere else

FYI, their MSG show tonight is gonna be streamed on Amazon Music UK’s Twitch stream at 830pm est

thanks ufo
i have to say, for a band that has always had its visual elements completely dialed in, this "living room" stage set is kinda corny and out of place.
― alpine static, Tuesday, 8 November 2022 01:55 (two years ago) link
the audio is just constantly warping on this ... i don't think it's just me.
― alpine static, Tuesday, 8 November 2022 02:09 (two years ago) link
the chat on this thing is wild. young ppl, man.

aloeveriamusic: hoping i catch one of their shows before matty gets full canceled
― alpine static, Tuesday, 8 November 2022 02:15 (two years ago) link
audio sounds fine to me, you might just have a bad connection, or set the quality to 1080p instead of 'auto'

The 1975: plays a bunch of their songs
litz_425: this set is mental!

oh man, I saw them last night in Philly at this huge amphitheater and we managed to score pit tickets (which considering their fans was both a blessing and a curse), it was one of the most ambitious and conceptual and theatrical shows I've ever seen?? at one point Matty yelled WE ARE THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD and it was like okay girl take a deep breath, but also... idk, it didn't feel as much of a stretch as it would have been if p much any other band had said it. they are certainly the most SOMETHING band in the world.

The first time I saw them, behind the second album, it was pretty straight forward, albeit still great. The second time was behind "Brief History," and while it wasn't particularly conceptual, it was pretty impressive.https://i.imgur.com/j2h7n6C.jpg
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 November 2022 17:14 (two years ago) link
yeah i think personally i liked the colorful big video screens & visual/informational overload aesthetics of the i like it and brief inquiry tours... especially in the "very best" part of this show i think there's less to hold the eye. but also the way it was set up at MSG i was a bit off to the side as compared to how an amphitheater would be laid out so maybe some of the nuances of the set & show choreography were lost on me. i need to go back and watch the amazon stream. there was lots of fun bits tho and i liked the stuff they did w/ the various lighting fixtures. in particular i like how matty ends the show by climbing a light pole and, in the parlance of the band, shutting the big light off
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2022 17:22 (two years ago) link
based on the amazon stream i think whatever sort of commentary on masculinity matty was aiming for kinda falls flat but there's still a lot to like about what they're going for here
do miss the bright lights information overload vibe but it's fine that they're doing something new.
― ufo, Thursday, 10 November 2022 18:45 (two years ago) link
Heh, I meant to say "Brief Inquiry," but you all know what I meant.

What did you do? Screw up like the Beatles and say you were bigger than Jesus?
― Vinnie, Friday, 11 November 2022 00:14 (two years ago) link
Loving that MSG concert so far, have watched most of the BFIAFL songs. I don't find the set corny at all
― Vinnie, Friday, 11 November 2022 00:16 (two years ago) link
i'm straight, but damn the bass player has really turned into a hot, strapping, hirsute dad vibe
― alpine static, Friday, 11 November 2022 09:01 (two years ago) link
so maxwell frost the first gen z congressman from florida who tweeted that he was celebrating his win by going to see the 1975 in concert and then got shouted out by matty on stage revealed in pitchfork today that he's seen them live 13 times. i need him posting in this thread
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 November 2022 17:44 (two years ago) link
I need to know if he's single.

Show is in Los Angeles on Monday and still not sure if I'm going. The new album is mediocre at best. I do like it but my 1975 standards made for a disappointing album this time around. On top of that they released their best song first.
― Bee OK, Thursday, 24 November 2022 03:49 (one year ago) link
This is the best band in the world right now. New album is not up to standard.
― Bee OK, Thursday, 24 November 2022 03:51 (one year ago) link
the new one is growing on me. having my usual issues with limp ballad detours but I think I will end up loving them
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkIqI05qAZImatty’s hand gesture at 14:45 -_-
― k3vin k., Thursday, 24 November 2022 12:51 (one year ago) link
Only thing I don't like about BFIAFL is how short it is. Even "Human Too", the worst track, has grown on me. Sequencing is wonderful too
I did a relisten of all their albums last week and now I'd pretty much rank albums 1, 2, 4 and 5 all around the same level of quality, which is to say superb, and album 3 only a little under that. Best band in the world
― Vinnie, Thursday, 24 November 2022 15:44 (one year ago) link
