aloeveriamusic: hoping i catch one of their shows before matty gets full canceled

audio sounds fine to me, you might just have a bad connection, or set the quality to 1080p instead of 'auto'

oh man, I saw them last night in Philly at this huge amphitheater and we managed to score pit tickets (which considering their fans was both a blessing and a curse), it was one of the most ambitious and conceptual and theatrical shows I've ever seen?? at one point Matty yelled WE ARE THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD and it was like okay girl take a deep breath, but also... idk, it didn't feel as much of a stretch as it would have been if p much any other band had said it. they are certainly the most SOMETHING band in the world.

The first time I saw them, behind the second album, it was pretty straight forward, albeit still great. The second time was behind "Brief History," and while it wasn't particularly conceptual, it was pretty impressive.

yeah i think personally i liked the colorful big video screens & visual/informational overload aesthetics of the i like it and brief inquiry tours... especially in the "very best" part of this show i think there's less to hold the eye. but also the way it was set up at MSG i was a bit off to the side as compared to how an amphitheater would be laid out so maybe some of the nuances of the set & show choreography were lost on me. i need to go back and watch the amazon stream. there was lots of fun bits tho and i liked the stuff they did w/ the various lighting fixtures. in particular i like how matty ends the show by climbing a light pole and, in the parlance of the band, shutting the big light off

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2022 17:22 (two years ago) link

based on the amazon stream i think whatever sort of commentary on masculinity matty was aiming for kinda falls flat but there's still a lot to like about what they're going for here

do miss the bright lights information overload vibe but it's fine that they're doing something new.

ufo, Thursday, 10 November 2022 18:45 (two years ago) link

Heh, I meant to say "Brief Inquiry," but you all know what I meant.

What did you do? Screw up like the Beatles and say you were bigger than Jesus?

Vinnie, Friday, 11 November 2022 00:14 (two years ago) link

Loving that MSG concert so far, have watched most of the BFIAFL songs. I don't find the set corny at all

Vinnie, Friday, 11 November 2022 00:16 (two years ago) link

i'm straight, but damn the bass player has really turned into a hot, strapping, hirsute dad vibe

alpine static, Friday, 11 November 2022 09:01 (two years ago) link

so maxwell frost the first gen z congressman from florida who tweeted that he was celebrating his win by going to see the 1975 in concert and then got shouted out by matty on stage revealed in pitchfork today that he's seen them live 13 times. i need him posting in this thread

Show is in Los Angeles on Monday and still not sure if I'm going. The new album is mediocre at best. I do like it but my 1975 standards made for a disappointing album this time around. On top of that they released their best song first.

Bee OK, Thursday, 24 November 2022 03:49 (one year ago) link

This is the best band in the world right now. New album is not up to standard.

Bee OK, Thursday, 24 November 2022 03:51 (one year ago) link

the new one is growing on me. having my usual issues with limp ballad detours but I think I will end up loving them

matty’s hand gesture at 14:45 -_-

k3vin k., Thursday, 24 November 2022 12:51 (one year ago) link

Only thing I don't like about BFIAFL is how short it is. Even "Human Too", the worst track, has grown on me. Sequencing is wonderful too

I did a relisten of all their albums last week and now I'd pretty much rank albums 1, 2, 4 and 5 all around the same level of quality, which is to say superb, and album 3 only a little under that. Best band in the world

Vinnie, Thursday, 24 November 2022 15:44 (one year ago) link

41253 for me at this point

Seeing them tonight. Is it accurate that there is no opener?

Indexed, Friday, 9 December 2022 15:35 (one year ago) link

the opener on the current leg is blackstarkids iirc

ufo, Friday, 9 December 2022 15:37 (one year ago) link

Seeing them tonight, too. Might get a poster, they look cool.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 9 December 2022 15:42 (one year ago) link

See you there, Josh. I will be the only other dude over 35.

seeing them Monday! third time! would be fourth if not for Covid

Murgatroid, Friday, 9 December 2022 16:42 (one year ago) link

xpost lol, the last time I saw them, at the United Center, there was no way my buddy and I were not the oldest ones there. We may as well have been invisible.

lovely stripped down set, the tasteful sophisti-pop version of "paris" is better than the original

ufo, Saturday, 10 December 2022 06:00 (one year ago) link

The (justified) off the charts confidence of this band is really something else.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 10 December 2022 06:28 (one year ago) link

wow that version of “paris” is fantastic. and of “it’s
not living” too

The riff in "About You" reminds me of this song every time I hear it

They brought out Carly Holt for About You tonight, beautiful moment even if I could barely hear her over the fans scream-singing around me

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 05:07 (one year ago) link

I was at the Denver show nearly a week ago now. Our show had the live (solo, acoustic) debut of "102" as well as an unplugged "Be My Mistake" crowd singalong. The band sounded fantastic. There are several extra musicians in the live band who really help the newer song arrangements to flourish.

never a good sign when I get a random text from a friend asking if the singer of the 1975 is ok.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 17 December 2022 19:55 (one year ago) link

No complaints about the Denver show.

"Alright, this is where we step is up, everybody. This is where the show goes from here... to here... and then we're gonna go to HERE..."

three weeks pass...

Ugh fuck whatever I give up, I’m on my phone

(they brought out Taylor tonight in London, hence the pic)

Murgatroid, Thursday, 12 January 2023 23:51 (one year ago) link

which of them has jumped the shark?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 12 January 2023 23:59 (one year ago) link

taylor has been in their orbit since the first album more or less… she was at their terminal 5 show in 2014

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 January 2023 00:08 (one year ago) link

there were even pervasive rumours that matty & taylor were dating for a little bit though there didn't actually seem to be any substance to that
