is this still about cumtown

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 21 February 2023 03:35 (one year ago) link

he's beefing with yungblud because yungblud took issue with the cumtown appearance and it's deeply embarrassing

ufo, Tuesday, 21 February 2023 03:47 (one year ago) link

oh c’mon the video he posted of yungblud sitting on a toilet onstage while reading a book w/ the caption “i feel partly responsible for this” was pretty funny

i pointedly ignore matty’s amateur podcasting career & i would suggest everyone joins me. that having been said, i can see why yungblud speaking out against him rankles him in particular and you can see matty’s argument as to why in the video, even if it’s childish on the surface

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 February 2023 03:59 (one year ago) link

yes, I ignore all of Matty's extracurriculars and all of yungblud's everything, it's worked out well so far

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 21 February 2023 05:24 (one year ago) link

Knowing more about Yungblud than Cum Town is not the high ground you think it is haha

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 21 February 2023 05:30 (one year ago) link

not sure who you're talking to here but I assure you I don't give a shit about which ground I'm on here

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 21 February 2023 12:59 (one year ago) link

why ignore who this guy really is? I have no idea who Yungblud is.

About You (from the last album) is the best song I’ve ever heard by them. Hope whatsisnuts doesn’t turn into Russell Brand.

piscesx, Tuesday, 21 February 2023 15:33 (one year ago) link

he's got that big ego + semi-smart + huge cult following, high risk factors

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 21 February 2023 15:42 (one year ago) link

the part of the podcast where they yuk it up to a "sowwwy" racist "asian accent" was pretty vile

wasn’t gonna post these but fuck it, these were taken around 24 hours before that garbage podcast episode went up. matty healy how can you go about being nice & friendly to my face and then turn around the next day to join your bros and laugh along racist remarks of my identity? pic.twitter.com/SihF9SP4mP

yeah I remember a Healy complaint along the lines of “rappers are the only stars who are allowed to be masculine these days” and it felt like a little reactionary tremor

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Tuesday, 21 February 2023 15:58 (one year ago) link

one month passes...

good but kinda weird show tonight. they didn't have the set with the house (i assume logistical constraints) and matty began by explaining that the show was not the "at their very best" show as advertised and was instead "a theatrical performance of an intimate moment" (i think?) and opened with "be my mistake" alone before doing the whole drinking/smoking routine he'd been doing in the middle of the "at their very best" show except he didn't even try to maintain character, seemed to be some weird meta-commentary on the previous tour legs?

then they did "looking for somebody (to love)" and it was just a regular show with no further gimmicks. setlist sequencing was kinda all over the place & i wish they did more from the last two albums - they didn't even do "part of the band" or the new "the 1975" & they played more from abiior than bfiafl. we at least got "tonight" (which sounded wonderful) as well as "if you're too shy" from notes, but other shows recently got "me & you together song", "roadkill" and "the birthday party" too so i'm a little disappointed there. they've really levelled up as a live band with the expanded lineup at least - the new "paris" arrangement is gorgeous and they've finally figured out how to play "ugh!" properly live (previous live recordings i'd heard never seemed to do it justice).

unfortunately felt a bit too reminiscent of their show from the abiior tour overall at times with how many they played from that album, & most of the same old hits as before.

some top tier stage banter from matty too: apparently there's a meme going around comparing him to 'the rat from flushed away' so he revealed that his godfather co-wrote flushed away & actually somewhat based that character on him?

ufo, Saturday, 15 April 2023 13:28 (one year ago) link

three weeks pass...

I couldn’t care less who Matty is dating but it does concern me that the band will continue to be in Jack Antonoff’s sphere for the ongoing future

Murgatroid, Saturday, 6 May 2023 04:18 (one year ago) link

not inclined to put a lot of stock in that story until there's solid evidence given false rumours of them dating were already a thing in the press like a decade ago, before they'd even met lol

ufo, Saturday, 6 May 2023 04:34 (one year ago) link

he was apparently at her show in Nashville last night

yeah that's a good piece though i kinda wish it'd gotten more out of him re: the podcast

he definitely underestimated swifties though with this though lol:

But it doesn’t actually matter. Nobody is sitting there at night slumped at their computer, and their boyfriend comes over and goes, ‘What’s wrong, darling?’ and they go, ‘It’s just this thing with Matty Healy.’ That doesn’t happen.

ufo, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 19:09 (one year ago) link

lol Azealia Banks has now gotten involved in whatever's going on via IG stories (as usual)

potentially walking into a minefield here but can someone sum up his appearance on the podcast fka as Cum Town which I will never listen to and lmk why everyone (Swifties and a lot of non-Swifties too) think he's racist

just a summary thx

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 15:31 (one year ago) link

iirc he made jokes at the expense of Ice Spice and attempted to mimic a few accents he really shouldn't have mimicked. but I've never listened to that podcast, either. Plus his current persona is just general all-around edgelord asshat, so he's been inviting pushback/misunderstanding/controversy. In other words, the joke is on us, maaaaaaaaaan.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 15:44 (one year ago) link

I wonder what the 1975 would be like with a more conventional frontman

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 15:49 (one year ago) link

completely different!

k3vin k., Tuesday, 6 June 2023 15:50 (one year ago) link

I also have not listened to the podcast nor have the desire to, but my understanding was that matty laughed along rather than made the impressions himself

k3vin k., Tuesday, 6 June 2023 15:53 (one year ago) link

well yeah, completely different but I like them enough musically that if they were to one day tell Matty to eff off, I would still be curious enough to give the 1975 without Matty a try sorry sorry sorry

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 15:54 (one year ago) link

the crucial bit of that interview:

I asked him about the podcast. He’d been doing so much promo, he told me, that he wanted to do something that felt more like simply talking with his friends. But, of course, he had done this all in public, on mike. Had he baited his fans on purpose? “A little bit,” he said. “But it doesn’t actually matter."

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Tuesday, 6 June 2023 16:01 (one year ago) link

Healey seem like such a clear example of somebody who fans are gonna defend because he's, you know, complicated, and Jia gives him plenty of room for that self-portrait.

But I mean, the various people of color I follow online have absolutely no patience for this shit, and why should they? He's a racist, Swift is showing us who she is, none of this is in the least complicated: I paraphrase the perspective from non-pop music fans.with no particular iinterest in celebrity gossip. The whole thing is just another episode of White Folks Not Owning Their Racism. Should I tell them "no, read Jia's piece, he's complicated?"

gucci meme (theStalePrince), Tuesday, 6 June 2023 16:59 (one year ago) link

“the various people of color i follow online” sounds like a scrapped matty lyric so you two may have more in common than you think… (he is probably a better editor tho)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 6 June 2023 17:07 (one year ago) link

Well, Jordan, I could define them for you in whatever more detailed demographic terms you'd prefer--maybe a chart?

gucci meme (theStalePrince), Tuesday, 6 June 2023 17:16 (one year ago) link

jord you gonna run the streaming numbers so we can get to the bottom of this?

uh, what seems to have people most upset is his story about masturbating to an apparently deeply gross porn site called ghetto gaggers which saw described as 'white men humiliating and sexually dominating Black women — physical violence coupled with jokes about poverty, welfare, slavery, putting nooses on women, etc.'

H in Addis, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 19:11 (one year ago) link

Yes. Gross isn’t the word for that website. Evil.

treeship., Tuesday, 6 June 2023 19:13 (one year ago) link

Again, it’s not just a “depiction” of this. It’s also not “kink.” There are real women who are victims of this website. Plenty of testimonials online from people who were victimized on the set of this company’s videos.

treeship., Tuesday, 6 June 2023 19:17 (one year ago) link

what seems to have people most upset is his story about masturbating to an apparently deeply gross porn site called ghetto gaggers

which in context was definitely not serious, one of the cum town guys started telling a story about matty including that detail, and he went along with it. not a funny bit at all but no one's takeaway should be 'matty is sincerely into racist abusive porn'

i think all this shit sucks, matty crossed some lines and rightfully seems to regret it, but the game of telephone with swifties has also been completely ridiculous

ufo, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 21:41 (one year ago) link

they announced another north american arena tour for the fall... i don't think matty is purely cynical enough to date the most famous pop star in the world just weeks before they have to sell hundreds of thousands of new tickets, some of them in large venues they just played months ago but........

if anything this tour does mile mark the new level of popularity that they've hit... playing arenas in places like charlotte, tampa, kansas city, salt lake city, sacramento etc... the biggest venues in these cities outside of stadiums. in some cities like boston, nashville, pittsburgh they're stepping up from 4-6k cap theaters or mini-arenas to the full on 20k cap basketball/hockey venues. all after, commercially speaking, their least successful album in a half-decade! the power of matty's own celebrity is very strong, almost feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy in a way

maybe it means a new album too. they'll have been on the road for so long that i kinda doubt it but you never know w/ them. i'll be there of course but i'm not necessarily dying to see the very best show again...

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 June 2023 15:33 (one year ago) link

yeah, they've never disappointed live but not sure I wanna go see them again this go-round if they're not gonna have a new album behind it

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 13 June 2023 15:47 (one year ago) link

it’s been rumored for years they have a drive like i do album in the tank and i demand they release it

One of the local stations that never used to play the 1975 played "Part of the Band" a bunch before the album came out, and I still heard it occasionally a while after. But I haven't heard them play it for months, and I've never heard this station play anything else by the band. Maybe they were just dipping a toe in, and decided it ultimately wasn't for them?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 13 June 2023 16:49 (one year ago) link

last year matty talked about the drive like i do album - iirc he said he'd recorded a bunch of stuff but most of it wasn't quite finished and it was only an EP's worth because some of the songs originally written for it elsewhere - "wintering" was from it, and "pictures of us" from beabadoobee's album

they've been working on a new album while on tour again this year but i doubt it'll be out this year. maybe we get a new single if they're really excited by something idk. i think the new tour leg is just them touring obsessively like always & realising they can just play arenas everywhere now - i don't think they quite realised how big they were when booking the previous legs and played smaller venues than they could have

ufo, Tuesday, 13 June 2023 22:55 (one year ago) link

*some of the songs originally written for it ended up elsewhere
