i've been thinking i want to get back into Mascis style shredding. i was moving more in a jazzier/country direction and bought a gretch semi-hollow but i never really fell in love with it. should i be looking at telecasters? i just want something basic with a whammy

Alomar’s Alembic guitar just doesn’t look right, and maybe it’s because I’ve seen so many Alembic basses*. It reminds me of this, which also doesn’t look right:https://www.retrofret.com/images/9605_guitar/xLarge/9605_01.jpg*I’ve never once seen any Alembic in person, just in photos.

Tomson Mustang update: some hidden problems - neck heel needed drilling and dowelling but now a solid joint. New bone nut, fresh set of 12s, three full turns on the truss rod (which by some miracle still works), shims and adjustments ... it's about 90% of the way there and plays well. Pickups are great.https://imgur.com/Zm9uIRH.jpghttps://imgur.com/BOYzWYE.jpgImpressive for a 50 year old cheapie. I doubt it played this well out of the factory!

Not generally a fan of gold hardware but the wear has it looking pretty good. Looks like bridge and neck pickups were changed to P90s.

Craigslist guy wants $1100 for this '80s Greco Danelectro - too much (a vintage Silvertone 1448 goes for less) but I'm curious what their lipstick pickups sound like

― papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 20 April 2023 05:32 (one year ago) link
i have a 90's one of those with a wooden bridge & plastic tuners. the best thing about it is the neck. it has the most comfortable neck and you can play it all day. how the lipstick pickups sound. the best i can explain it- well, the tele goes "honk" and the strat goes "quack" & the dano goes "bong" and that's the way it goes. with the pickup selector switcg it's very versatile, you can play an entire set on 'em. so much so that i used it as my main guitar for gigging without a backup for a time, often without a backup, which was incredibly stupid because it's very unreliable. one time a bushing grommet flew off during our opening song at a huge gig in front of like 1k ppl, and i was horrendously out of tune for the entire set. with the metal hardware it loses some mojo. i think i paid around $200 incl. hard case.
― hoonja doonja love me anymore (Deflatormouse), Thursday, 20 April 2023 06:15 (one year ago) link
it goes (((bong))), like there's an orb around the sound it makes, it seems to levitate. it's missing something, doesn't have that grounding zap! to it, kinda hovers or floats in midair. the odd duck that doesn't quack.

I usually don't like the racing stripes but i really love that mustang
The jaguar I bought showed up a while ago and it was flawless, no dust or marks or anything anywhere. There was a little fret wear so someone had played it but otherwise it was pristine. It also had an actual fender branded locking trem instead of a squier one but no bar. It took a while to set up because whoever i bought if from seemed to have no idea what they were doing.
Never having played one I didn't know what to expect, but I like it even though the short scale and relatively large frets feel really strange. But I can kind of play the intro to radiohead's 'let down' now because I can actually stretch between the 3rd and 6th frets

router went out so had to hit best buy yesterday, stopped in at the nearby guitar center on a whim
was trying out fender basses and it was really funny - i was switching between the players series stuff (around $850) and the higher end Squire (around $450) - in every case I thought the Squire felt better, neck felt more solid, just overall I liked them better

Yeah, I'm into the idea of a closed hollow body. I picked it up and it felt so nice. And yeah it looks really good too. It seems like maybe they were actually introduced pretty late, like 2010s? But a little unclear to me.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 9 May 2023 16:38 (one year ago) link
I tried a used one they had at GC, but it seemed priced to high and it was missing the cool pickguard
The Aristocrat is intriguing. Chambered, with P-90s? No wonky Bigsby, which is a plus.
Personally I have yet to truly love a semi-hollowbody. I had a very nice 339 for a while but could tell it wasn't for me. Couldn't hear the wood and air at all. And try as I might, I don't think I will ever truly love a humbucker. I had vaguely thought that my next move in that direction might be something fully hollow, possibly with P90s, but my attention is elsewhere at present.
Best of luck to you man
