I think To Ramona has potential - Sinead Lohan's version isn't bad.

When I play it, which I sometimes do, I cut out a lot of the more stilted backward phrasing and lose one or more verses.

Totally agree that His Bobness often lacks an inner editor, and the people surrounding him are not empowered to tell him when he's making a mistake.

Steely Duran (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 5 August 2023 10:20 (one year ago)

does this version grab ya? It sorta has that California country sound

Better.

Continuous Two-Tone Warble (Tom D.), Saturday, 5 August 2023 10:45 (one year ago)

lil Wayne’s best work was done when he was a minor

brimstead, Saturday, 5 August 2023 16:45 (one year ago)

I don't think I agree but I could definitely see the rationale for that one.

linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Sunday, 6 August 2023 12:46 (one year ago)

"dragon" (lou reed + metallica) = one of the best songs either has recorded

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 10 August 2023 17:48 (one year ago)

That is insanity

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 10 August 2023 17:55 (one year ago)

in a better world it would not be a controversial opinion

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 August 2023 17:56 (one year ago)

I'll agree that it features probably one of the best Kirk's solos.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 10 August 2023 17:57 (one year ago)

I do love saying LULU is my favorite Metallica album to hardcore stans and hear them lose their minds.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 10 August 2023 17:59 (one year ago)

better roots rock bands than The Band: ZZ Top, The Stoneman Family, Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cowboy, Homer & Jethro, Little Feat, any episode of Hee Haw, Disney's Country Bear Jamboree.

scott seward, Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:07 (one year ago)

I find all International Anthem releases other than Jamie Branch's to be tedious and not as groundbreaking as widely advertised. (Who remembers Thirsty Ears' Blue Series?)

Chevy Chase drumming mystery (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:09 (one year ago)

it says "controversial," not "banworthy"

ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:09 (one year ago)

One aspect of Lulu that I don't think people think about is that it was the first time in a while and the last time ever you got to hear Metallica play as an actual band with good production, not protooled within an inch of their lives

Funny, I find Branch’s releases really boring and cringeworthy and a host of other stuff really interesting!

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:18 (one year ago)

I’d 100% agree LULU is their best material in the past 25/30+ years.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:26 (one year ago)

Also more true for Metallica than for Lou Reed. There’s still gems in Raven and Ecstasy

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:28 (one year ago)

I mean...if you don't like Metallica, that's fine? But to run around yakking about how great Metallica can be when they sound nothing like themselves is just weird.

I'm with Scott on the Band. They might have been OK had they made two albums and faded away, but they made, like, seven.

I like a lot of International Anthem's early releases — Irreversible Entanglements, Junius Paul, Damon Locks, Makaya McCraven — but their recent indie-crossover stuff has been fucking dire.

The Thirsty Ear Blue Series deserves a second look, though. A lot of it was great.

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 10 August 2023 19:05 (one year ago)

when they sound nothing like themselves

not correct in the least

ivy., Thursday, 10 August 2023 19:13 (one year ago)

I love Metallica! Master of Puppets is one of my fav albums ever

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 August 2023 19:14 (one year ago)

the riffs on lulu are metallica as fuck

minus the 15 minute ambient ebbing that concludes it "junior dad" reminds me a great deal of "hero of the day," etc.

ivy., Thursday, 10 August 2023 19:16 (one year ago)

Superunknown has more or less the same snare drum sound as St Anger but one is a classic while the other is St Anger.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Thursday, 10 August 2023 19:16 (one year ago)

I'm with Scott on the Band. They might have been OK had they made two albums and faded away, but they made, like, seven.

But none of those albums after their first two made much impact beyond a critical one, and they were too anonymous -- too interested in music -- to be as grossly ubiquitous as CSN. Basically, the public knows them for "The Weight," and probably Aretha's.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 10 August 2023 19:20 (one year ago)

Stagefright is great though, and as much as I'm skeptical of remixes of old albums, Robbie's new version was really great

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 August 2023 19:24 (one year ago)

the first band album is basically hauntology

brimstead, Thursday, 10 August 2023 19:26 (one year ago)

XXXp to unperson, forgot about the Junius Paul and Irreversible Entanglements releases, which I'll rep for. I've tried to get into Makaya McCraven and Damon Locks to no avail.

the phantom flim-flammer (Matt #2), Thursday, 10 August 2023 19:39 (one year ago)

The best thing about Master of Puppets is that it generated the utterly perfect spoonerism Pastor of Muppets. Never before or since has there been a better pair of phrases - one intended seriously and the other just plain silly, with a sly pop-culture reference.

For wordplay dorks like me it really was a sterfect porm.

xp idk Matt I've been aware of that record since circa 1979 and never got the joke either

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Thursday, 10 August 2023 21:09 (one year ago)

it totally scans as literally a "night in the ruts" to me because it's the LP following legendary 70s excess

They kinda did this once; the live album Sunn O))) Presents...Pentemple has NZ black metal dude Sin Nanna (of Striborg) on drums. It's...okay.

I actually never got the pun in "Porcupine Tree" until recently

It's not very good so that's why nobody notices it.

The rear cover of “night in the ruts” does give a hint of the spoonerism

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 10 August 2023 21:26 (one year ago)

night in the ruts has shaken my entire worldview, my life has been a lie

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 August 2023 21:31 (one year ago)

I learned early because I was reading Steven Tyler's annotations in the liner notes for....something, where he was going album by album, and he got to Night in the Ruts and he said something like "reverse two letters and you'll learn what Aerosmith is really about"

linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Thursday, 10 August 2023 21:37 (one year ago)

I mean, Night in the Ruts is downright poetic compared to the ever so subtle title/cover art combo for Pump
