tbh I think all of Stevie's classic albums have some bad parts on them, I mean you listen to "Sweet Little Girl" and tell me what the hell is going on

"I'm not sure how much of ILX shares my personal-taste view on ballads, but my own personal issue with most of them is the way they often lack any contribution from a rhythm section"
you need more disco and boogie ballads. or 80s r&b. plenty of bass. i swear this cd has been playing in my car all summer long. bass in your face! and beautiful ballads galore. well, as much bass as my subaru allows. but to be fair its a decent amount of bass! i play it really loud all through town. people know Change is coming!

Thanks for the rec, Scott! And yes, I'm ready to add more disco/funk ballads to my listening routine.

there’s a lot of sort of wandering, bleating things crowding them out on the albums
These are some of my favourite Stevie Wonder songs - "Smile Please", "Too Shy to Say", "Joy Inside My Tears", "The Secret Life of Plants". It's more often when he's trying to throw a party on vinyl that he gets boring.

Given it’s the 1977-1980 output that’s critically adored, I can see it. Sorta like saying New Jersey is the best Bon Jovi album.

I wish that the algorithm was programmed to replace every publicly played Smiths/Morrissey song with a James song, because I’d enjoy it more and it’d also be delicious

the "just a kiss away" section at the end of Gimme Shelter is extremely lame and almost torpedoes the song.

Merry Clayton and Mick Jagger discussing her part.
― the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 12:56 (one year ago) link
yeah merry clayton and the intro are easily the best parts of the song, but for all its faults it's still a powerful record, that feeling of society being balanced on a knife edge over complete chaos. then mick comes in at the end like a fucking hippy and says we can fix it all with a kiss. and bearing in mind his sexual politics as expressed in other songs of the same period, fuck off with your kiss mick.
― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 14:07 (one year ago) link
we can fix it all with a kiss
I think the message of this part of the song is more "chaos and violence are sexy".
― Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 14:35 (one year ago) link
I agree that it does also come across as a sleazy come-on, but I don't think that was the intention
― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 14:50 (one year ago) link
yeah the rolling stones would never include a sleazy come on in one of their songs
― is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 15:16 (one year ago) link
the kiss away part is good because of that time where mick syncs up with charlie for this great drum fill

as far as music from the united kingdom goes, you only need to listen to records made from 1900 to 1920 or records made from 1964 to 1984. you can safely ignore the rest.

a couple of major problems I have with this, let's start with the easier one, please tell me five good records made in the UK between 1900 and 1920?

hate hate hate that song and I love afx
i was giving those early years the benefit of the doubt because i figured their were some choice music hall sides or a really cracking version of "pretty polly" out there in the u.k. not to mention some sweet welsh-language numbers. actually i'm willing to extend it to 1926. just in case harry lauder doesn't make the cut by 1920.
x-post

Lauder does make the cut by 1920 - he recorded most of his famous numbers like "Roamin' in the Gloamin'" and "I Love a Lassie" in the 1910s.I wish I knew more pre-1920 UK music; I'm a big Welsh music enthusiast but I don't really know about any Welsh-language records from then.
