There was a photo of this band where this guy was wearing a clip on fox tail on his arse. That did not inspire me to inquire further about this band but I still remember it years later.

is this what you're thinking of with "hopping around in his pyjamas"? it's the guitarist's solo project
― ufo, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 10:15 (two months ago) link
That later performance is something else. It's like he saw the likes of Christine & The Queens who do actual dance routines on a big open floor on Later and he thought "I'll have a go at that". I imagine he doesn't have people close to him who'll try and stop him for his own good
― PaulTMA, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 10:23 (two months ago) link
No, he did two songs - maybe three - and the first one he was wearing some kind of stripy pyjama outfit. I've never seen it since.

the "There's nothing better than picking up a second-hand LP, thinking that maybe 40 years ago it was being played at some mad psychedelic party somewhere" is kind of touching, imo. I think about stuff like that when I listen to old second-hand records. Though Kasabian haven't really managed to incorporate this yearning, wistful quality into their own music, from what I've heard of it.
― soref, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 12:35 (two months ago) link
maybe in the future someone will pick up a second-hand CD copy of Empire by Kasabian and think about how 40 years earlier it might have been playing at a mad psychedelic party in 2006
― soref, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 12:38 (two months ago) link
well one would have to be mad
― ufo, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 12:40 (two months ago) link
Tom D.: so did a little research and this is what I got.
The clip you’re searching for is not Kasabian it’s The SLP. He performed three tracks on Jools Holland Season 54 Episode 3:
1. Favourites (with Little Simz)2. (Trance)3. Nobody Else
“Nobody Else” is the infamous pajamas performance but was only on the extended version of the show. Which might explain why it’s so hard to find. The other two are easy to find online.

I think I said it at the time, it was like he'd never even heard of Jimmy Pursey's excursion into interpretive dance.

He did this again when Velociraptor! was released in 2011.
"It's been 15 or 16 years since the last truly classic album, but I think we've done it""We're not your average pop band – we're avant garde yet we've sold nearly a million records on each album in England."
Ofc, this implies that Empire was, in fact, not a truly classic album, despite his initial claims to the contrary

And in this corner...
In the October 2006 issue of Giant magazine, Flowers was quoted as saying that Sam's Town would be "one of the best albums in the past twenty years",[10] and in Entertainment Weekly he remarked that it would be "the album that keeps rock & roll afloat."

incredible find moka. i don't think that's their official ig though, just a fan account
kasabian: classic or truly classic?
― ufo, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 13:46 (two months ago) link
It's actually not as bad as I'd remembered! I mean this antics, not the song which is utter shite.
― My God's got no nose... (Tom D.), Wednesday, 17 April 2024 14:28 (two months ago) link
lol he's barefoot?
― ufo, Wednesday, 17 April 2024 14:30 (two months ago) link
did he go for pyjamas because the lyrics are "some days i wake up..."
I think you might have mixed both the Pajamas outfit with the “favourites” performance which has more of a cringe inducing, try-hard performative dance going on. While Little Simz was trying to save the song he kept distracting me with whatever that snakey dance was.

The trance performance is also… not good.

i voted for "It's called Empire, which is our word for something that's fucking great" but "We will change time signatures in the middle of songs" is particularly funny coming from them

― H.P, Thursday, 18 April 2024 05:54 (two months ago) link
but "We will change time signatures in the middle of songs" is particularly funny coming from them
there's a certain pathos to the fact that, having fenced themselves into a universe where the only acceptable kind of music is aping the lad rock canon, dude is still aware that bands who shaped that canon took actual creative risks and so feels the need to reach for that as well - except the actual music can't sound like it, so it's a lot of grasping about "avante garde" and "African string sections" (lol) in interviews while the records continue to sound just like the previous one.
(this analysis probably not accurate to this solo project with Little Simz tbf, did not click)

i would summarise their music as third-rate primal scream rips
― ufo, Thursday, 18 April 2024 11:30 (two months ago) link
their whole sound seems to step specifically from "Pills". Wasn't long before they hired Dan the Automator.

Chuckled when I went to rym and saw that Empire is rated the lowest by a decent margin among their first few albums
Forget Alex Kapranos - I can't imagine many musicians in history give a shit about their band the way this guy does. Wonder how he feels today

i will give them credit for at least having the decency to focus on ripping off xtrmntr, there's a lot worse things they could have done in the 'mix between stone roses and primal scream with the swagger of oasis' tradition

The contrast between what doofuses like this promise and what the music actually sounds like, is the platonic ideal of the concept of bathos. (Insert Fast Show Indie Club sketch here).
