i love Crazy Train but voted Suicide Solution for nostalgic reasons: in my Yr 9 English class i wrote an essay on teenagers + heavy metal, abt McCollum/Suicide Solution (and Belknap/Judas Priest) and i got an A for it <3

thx Ozzy

easy to go with "Mr. Crowley".

I like almost everything Ozzy did in the 70s, but this album is almost as unbalanced a statement as Eat 'em and Smile. He's always needed others to write words and music for him, and Randy Rhoads was more just than a technician, but the balance and context (and discord) provided by three other creative minds has been lost; Sabbath was the perfect role for his skill set, and I felt like this album was just the faintest outlines of Ozzy.

On the other hand, my brother pointed out that the intro to "Crazy Train" has the "most Satanic" bassline because you can make devil horns in 4/4 time with the left while the right plays double stops on the open strings.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 28 April 2024 03:20 (one month ago) link

I liked this album a lot, in fact I like it more than the last album I polled which was Dio. I think it is probably Randy Rhoads that just elevates this record as there are riffs for days on this album.

"I Don't Know," "Crazy Train," "Suicide Solution" and "Mr. Crowley" are all worthy of my vote but in the end yah, like others have said, it is hard to get past the brilliance of "Crazy Train" so it got my vote in the end.

isn't that when he's at his best? i love dumb Ozzy.

the '81 live version was a hit single here. perfect radio music for 13 year olds.

Yeah so I woulda voted Crazy Train with Steal Away the Night a distant second but ngl, respect to whoever voted for Goodbye To Romance
I love hearing Ozzy do the really sappy Lennonesque love ballads in his numb emotionless delivery, it is that much colder than hearing him do nihilistic dirges, like being serenaded by a corpse.

In the 5th grade I got to perform a song on guitar for my youth club's annual recital/showcase, and I chose Crazy Train. I figured there were lots of tappy parts that would sound flashy even though fairly easy to play, but there are also some pretty fast runs that I struggled with and had to sorta fake, even alone in my room with the pressure off. On the night with crippling stage fright, it was never going to happen. So like I flubbed the solo pretty bad and I was embarrassed. The place was like a big room with a stage and a small office and a lot of sunken nooks and a small office, so that they could have different activities and classes going on at the same time but also occasional performances like plays and "battle of the bands" etc. So I walked off the stage into one of the little nooks which was like the designated "backstage" for that night where a bunch of my friends were, and immediately started yelling a stream of expletives to convey my embarrassment. So one of the kids comes running over looking alarmed, tells me everyone in the room could hear me cursing and that my parents were there (I didn't know!) and they were pissed :O

My controp is I guess that Ozzy doesn't have any bad albums? even Ozzmosis is good fun and the recent ones are way better than they have any right to be.

I remember “no rest for the wicked” being kind of weak but it’s been a minute since I last heard it

I stopped listening to Ozzy solo albums after The Ultimate Sin (which rules, ftr) and picked up again with Black Rain and Scream, both of which I liked. I saw him on the Scream tour, when he had Gus G from Firewind in the band, and it was a fantastic show.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Tuesday, 30 April 2024 22:02 (one month ago) link

Ultimate Sin is one of his best, I forget what the thread for this is called but the intro to Fool Like You sounds like the Greg Rolie organ part on Black Magic Woman, kinda funny
