I blame Ned.
the new Blood Freak album on Razorback btw, while not taking itself too seriously (Razorback's kind of a mondo sorta label), is great - good riffs & freaking incredible tone on the solos

i like it. i'd never heard whitehorse before. they do the ugly epic doom thing very well. i might like that monarch! double cd on crucial blast more though. maybe.
You might still be able to pick up the 2nd and 3rd live cdrs of Whitehorse(the 1st one is on that 20 buck spin cd). The Monarch is great. Compiles two vinyl releases and a tour single. Also pick up the 1st double cd "666". It's killer!

i'm sad that oystein doesn't feel the grim anymore :( Yes, it's all very terrible. I actually traded my copy of Countess' "Ad maiorem smashing superhits" for a Ruins record this weekend. What has become of me!
(on the plus side, I did hold the fire hire last night be enjoying some fine Sabbat - Satanasword action). Not very mean, nasty, ugly, evil METAL though. Just fun and metal. Maybe a bit evil, eh.)

is there any point to providing myspace links to stuff? i'm just curious. is it helpful? do people actually check stuff out? i do if it really seems like something i would like. i just wonder if its a waste of time.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link
These are the kind of people one might see at the guitar store, the music store or anywhere else for that matter and think to oneself, "Man, what a dipshit! Grow up, retard."
Then, one might go home and put on their album and say, "Damn, these guys ROCK!"

xp
i check them out if the description sounds interesting. like later i intend to dig graves in the sky cause that sounds like my bag.
anyway... does kreator count for this thread circa "coma of souls?" i just rebought it on cd and it's pretty killer. but around this point they're starting to look less like guys who'd get arrest for breaking beer bottles in a cemetary and more like guys who paint houses for a living and get arrested for having one spindly weed plant in their back window.

the grave in the sky album is soooooooooooooooo good.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link
you can certainly talk about kreator here. and sodom and destruction if you'd like.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link
I don't listen to myspace stuff no, and it's not 'cause I'm a snob - it's 'cause the player doesn't feed to my speakers, and that's how I wanna hear stuff
― J0hn D., Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link
i just wish everyone could hear how friggin' massive the actual grave in the sky cd is. so loud. seriously, i can't even put the volume up halfway, i'd break my speakers. i love how they get the psychedelic element right in their doom. so hypnotic. and so fierce.

Sometimes it appears as if everyone who likes evil etc metal in the world (and even some who don't) must be in evil etc metal bands. Except for Scott.

― scott seward, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 22:34 (seventeen years ago) link
It's all up to you. Since you can work alone on computer, it has to be doable.
― Gorge, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 22:36 (seventeen years ago) link
You'd have to be better than Striborg and Zweiz. People probably even know you better than them, anyway.

if cadaver eyes can do it, why not me?
CADAVER EYES IS A ONE-MAN-GRIND-BAND, THIS IS THE SETUP;

3. DMPRO [THE TRIGGERS ARE CONNECTED TO THIS BOX].

why do people hate on striborg so much, I kinda dig it
― J0hn D., Wednesday, 27 June 2007 23:35 (seventeen years ago) link
i like striborg. i haven't heard nefaria but i like the other one southern lord did, i dig his defiant use of as few notes as possible. like he's so into the first one he doesn't really want to get off it but knows technically it isn't a riff otherwise.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 28 June 2007 04:50 (seventeen years ago) link
Defiant use of as few notes as possible. Almost makes it sound like he's just playing "Louie Louie" instead of the trash that's on the CD. I bet Striborg can't actually play "Louie Louie." He would self-destruct.

ok, scott, i am with you on grave in the sky. pretty killer stuff. reminded me of sword heaven for a minute, strangely the only slow/crush/bang/BRRRR band NOT listed under "SOUNDS LIKE."

also, i am listening to tank. tank rules.
feel bad that i haven't been feeling the last round of willowtip releases. i swear i am not a part of the tech-death backlash.

the grave in the sky album is just wonderful and definitely the best of the three that i got from those dudes. but i do like the other two as well. it's just that the grave in the sky is just TOTAL, you know. one of those albums that seems like some sort of definitive statement.
― scott seward, Thursday, 28 June 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago) link
got an order from Gorgiastic. Guttural Secrete is a fucking brutal, ugly, hard to defend but pretty fuckin' great band.

i like their latest album as well. never heard their earlier stuff.
― scott seward, Sunday, 8 July 2007 22:12 (seventeen years ago) link
if this thread has been dormant it's because after writing about 12 or 13 blackmetal.com albums, three other metal albums, three stoner rock classics, and a list of 50 forgotten hard rock/proto-metal albums in a three day stretch i decided that i needed to hear some lighter fare. well, not completely light, but i raided our school bus and i've been revisiting vinyl i haven't listened to in a long time. some metal vinyl too.

I've listned to a fuck of a lotta goregrind this year
Foetopsy is the most likeable grind band in forever, seriously, see 'em if you get a chance...they're straight-out FUN!

I e-mailed a bunch of those Latino retro-thrash bands Scott listed above (Infantry, Death Hunter, Slaver, Merciless Death and a couple of others); there'll be a decent-sized piece on the "movement" in the Voice in a couple of weeks.

cool! i keep meaning to e-mail the decibel dudes and tell them to do a story. i don't want to do it, but someone could do a cool scene report.
― scott seward, Sunday, 8 July 2007 23:00 (seventeen years ago) link

did they? i don't remember.

Uh, yeah - I produced Accidental Suicide...must have been in '91 or thereabouts. I don't know whatever happened to them. They were nice guys and were friends with Viogression, I believe. Their album was out on Peaceville/Deaf. I got really busy with Death's Human release & tour and I lost track of AS. I recall that their singer was a nice guy - big as hell but soft spoken. One dude had Satan's bangs, his hair was so unique. We had to play with their guitar actions because they tuned down so low.

haha... i didn't even notice that. i remember him being like the guru of wisconsin metal or something. i miss morta skuld, at least their demos.
anyone heard the new sodom reunion album? final sign of evil or something like that. angelripper/witchhunter/grave violator line-up, covering the first ep plus songs that were allegedly written at the time and it was recorded/mixed by the band's webmaster for some reason. i haven't heard it - i want to! - but the review on maelstrom said something to the effect that it was "fucking terrible and you'll love it."
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 8 October 2007 02:15 (seventeen years ago) link
it sounds like Sodom! what's not to love?
― scott seward, Monday, 8 October 2007 03:19 (seventeen years ago) link
i even like the new re-recorded moonspell thing of their old satanic stuff. even if i usually think such projects are pretty pointless.
― scott seward, Monday, 8 October 2007 03:21 (seventeen years ago) link
i've been digging the stuff that no colours sent me: satanic warmaster, diabolic force, alastor, those who bring the torture.
also got a buttload of french canuck tech-death that i still need to wade through. got like four CDs by the band Obliveon for some reason. they are pretty good though.
best thing ever though is the defiance box that phil threw my way. just sounds so good to me right now. bay area thrash at its bayareaist.
