Ha, Norah Jones is good. My mom was actually telling me last night that lately she's only been listening to vocal jazz. She loves Patricia Barber, and just discovered someone named Carla Cook at a Borders listening station.

Also: Joni Mitchell?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom's rockin' Motown and Philly soul and 1970's insurgent country. She never liked the Beatles and she doesn't see any reason to change that now. She'd probably beat Travis with a stick.

Neudonym, Monday, 12 May 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Harry Connick, Jr.
Bobby McFerrin

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

my mom's copy of the OST from the movie of West Side Story is the #1 musical influence on me ever.

then again, her sickeningly complete Barbra Streisand collection is also something to be reckoned with, and not always in a good way

my sister's mom is all about Disturbed.
although my favourite moment involving her was one morning i slept over at their house when i was younger, and The Mommie came bouncing down the stairs, stuck a CD in the computer (was their only CD player for a long time), cranked the volume up...and began blasting Nine Inch Nails' "Heresy" v. loudly. and singing along v. loudly. and dancing around the kitchen...as she prepared to bounce off to church for Sunday service. *grins*

janni (janni), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(my actual mom, OTOH, is more about smooth jazz. years of being awakened to the strains of Manheim Steamroller and Kenny G provoke untold depths of seizure activity within me now. o.o;;;)

janni (janni), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

George Micheal

JasonD (JasonD), Monday, 12 May 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom turned me on to Elvis Costello. Other faves include: the Cars, Bowie (Ziggy Stardust esp.), Dire Straits, Morphine (HUGE fan), the Smiths, old REM, the Police.

Brandon Gentry (Brandon Gentry), Monday, 12 May 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

In the Nursery.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 May 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

my mom hearts Lyle Lovett.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Monday, 12 May 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

my mom goes for

elton john's 'don't shoot me, i'm only the piano player'
anything by police
janis joplin's 'cheap thrills'
lou reed's 'transformer'
jj cale's 'grasshopper'
- and flamenco, tango, son, you fucking name it, as long as it's ethnic.

Jay K (Jay K), Monday, 12 May 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I worked at a chain record store in the mid-to-late '80s, and whenever someone female and somewhere between their mid-20s and their mid-50s came in and asked for recommendations, I put on the latest Crowded House album and nine times out of 10 rang up a sale. Something about that nice Neil Finn . . .

My wife is a mom now, and she likes everything from Beck to Dolly Mixture to Blossom Dearie. She thinks the new Madonna album sucks, though.

Lee G (Lee G), Monday, 12 May 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

My mother loves opera, and has a fantastic record collection. She also loves bluegrass and lots of country.

Catherine (Catherine), Monday, 12 May 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

my mum likes shania twain, queen, blue, enrique iglesias, bryan adams and cat power.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 12 May 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

annie lennox

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom likes Badly Drawn Boy and Ween.

Evan (Evan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Wot? No UB40 or Simply Red?!!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom likes anything with a good beat to it. You know- so she can Jazzercise to it.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and all current bands that rip off those bands.

David Allen, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom likes Badly Drawn Boy and Ween.

You lie. Moms do not like Ween. Moms do not dance around the room listening to "Waving My Dick in the Wind." To accept that this is true would shatter my world.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Patti Smith, John Lee Hooker, the Pogues and The Harder They Come OST.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

My mum doesn't listen to music.

b.R.A.d. (Brad), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Mission of Burma
Consonat
Sonic Youth
Husker Du
The Replacements
Bruce Springsteen
Come
Bettie Serveert
Chris Brokaw
Bone Cootes (my mom's bartenders band)

My mom however, does not have any Jandek. She does however, have several original pressing Swans records and one Circus Mort, but I have never heard her play them. She always plays The Replacments before she goes out to the bar. I think this is the second most frequently played band in our house.
I found The Colour And The Shape in my mom's cd collection. And the rest is all history.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The coolest music my mom likes is Nick Drake and Tom Waits. I tend to block out the rest of the stuff she listens to.

Nick Mirov (nick), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom likes crap generally, but she's pretty open and listens to NPR all the time so occasionally she gets it right. She said she got me the new Tony Allen record because she heard it on NPR!

My stepmom listens to classical and canon rock, Springsteen, Stones, Tina Turner, etc.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, now my stepmom is a different story. Lady has a killer record collection. There's some crap in there, I s'pose... Rick Derringer, anyone? But there's also lots of Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye and Zeppelin and Alice Cooper and stacks and stacks of rock and soul 45s from the late 60's to the early 70's. When I was a kid, I'd sit up all night in front of the stereo.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

ween's moms like ween. except for "lmlyp" (for understandable reasons of course)

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna sound all sentimental, but my mom was directly responsible for my love of music. It was the '60s. I was a little English kid. She brought home:

-- those magical Apple Label Beatles 45s (various)
-- Dusty
-- Righteous Bros.

Among others. But not bad for a working class 60s English homestead. I believed in something as a result. Still do.

David A. (Davant), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Off topic, but I remember the day my dad brought home "Thriller." He was (and is) my hero.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom listen to Rod stewart and flute-music.

Jens (brighter), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lollies are clearly momrock.

Proof: Attention Canadians! We're famous. Or something. (Or at least, On The Radio)

Our biggest demographic fan group seems to be teenage girls *and* their mothers. Weird.

kate, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

A similar idea from this time last year.

RFI: What is Dadrock?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Daniel O'Donnel.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe that my mum like to listen to Nat King Cole, Vic Damone, Glann Miller, Matt Monroe and Napalm Death

I may be mistaken about one of these 'though.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Aye, no on elistens to fuckin' Glen Miller anymore.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I started this thread as a response to "dadrock."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I only referred to the other thread, rather egotistically, for my own contribution, viz:

"Jonathan Romney - writing about 'Last Orders', funnily enough - claimed that the Cinema du Cahiers boyz referred to something called 'Cinema du papa', ie proper flicks your dad would like. Stuff that is insufficiently anxious about influence, maybe. I don't know if this is true or not. I rather hope he made it up.

I think mumpop is quite a fun idea, actually. St Etienne with their Dusty/70sMOR/girlgroup fetish are a good example. Actually mumpop is a good term for all those PSB/MarcAlmond/Smiths records reviving a Dusty/Pitney/Sandie.

Dad Rock = insufficiently Oedipal. mumpop = extravagantly so."

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

all mums love 'smooth' by santana and the guy from matchbox 20

minna (minna), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

my stepmum has a fantastic collection of english folk music and i thank her for this as it's something i never know much about before.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

My mum had a childhood crush on Mario Lanza but not as bad as the girls in Heavenly Creatures.

These albums/artists feature, although she is really more of a soft-rock radio listener:

Michael Bolton
Streisand/Gibb, Guilty (THE DIVORCE RECORD, goes with...shudder...Blue Nun)
Steve Winwood
Bette Midler
Diana Ross

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

my mum likes the following...

carole king
prefab sprout
pulp
lighthouse family
robert palmer
tubular bells

my folks have quite a nice vinyl collection with some good classic rock - beatles, fleetwood mac etc. i'm not sure my mum likes much of that stuff anymore, though. i know she liked Yes when she was younger, too.

daniel o'donnell is grandmother rock.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I worked at a chain record store in the mid-to-late '80s, and whenever someone female and somewhere between their mid-20s and their mid-50s came in and asked for recommendations, I put on the latest Crowded House album and nine times out of 10 rang up a sale.

Ha! You're right -- my mom walked into a record store in 1979 and came home with "I Want You" by Split Enz because they had it on the store stereo and she liked it. More recent Mom-likes have included Belle and Sebastian, Magnetic Fields and the Beautiful South.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Guns and Roses.

maria b (maria b), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Bolton and Curtis Stigers to thread

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I should clarify--not just any females, but nice middle-class mom types.

Lee G (Lee G), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

And I should clarify too -- "I Got You" by Split Enz. As opposed to "I Want You." Or "I Want You to Want Me."

JesseFox (JesseFox), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom likes Pete Yorn and Guster. She owns Odelay etc...but doesn't listen to it often anymore - like anyone does.

Fife, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom likes James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Great Big Sea, Christine Lavin, The Beatles, Abba, Eva Cassidy and the Ally McBeal soundtracks.

My aunt, though, likes Nick Cave, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, The Stones, The Velvet Underground, The Doors, Dylan, and Patsy Cline.

Ian Johnson, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Great Big Sea, the shame of Newfs everywhere. BASTARDS.

I used to make my Mom listen to the local Alt.Rock morning show with me on the way to school. One time I caught her singing "Blow Up The Outside World" by Soundgarden while doing the dishes.

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My mother loves Motown, too. Classic Motown -- The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, etc. She went wild when PBS started showing the "doo-wop" & "classic soul" concerts. I haven't seen her that happy about any musical anything before in my life. This is a good thing. Mom also likes Michael Jackson. This is a bad thing. Mom basically likes anything soul and r&b that sounds classic. From approx. 1990 - 1992, she really liked En Vogue and Mariah Carey. I've caught her humming along to my U2 and Tears for Fears albums, too. I thought that was very cool, especially for someone who's just one year shy of 60. Go Mom!

Dad's the Glenn Miller fan in the family; he also really likes Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa. Dad's tastes in music are eclectic. He is the only electrician/carpenter in the world whom I'm aware has a big thing for classical music, and what's tickled me pink is that he's actually said he likes some Duran Duran and Japan songs (!) This is good for someone who's 60 right now.

I've never played my Roxy Music albums for them before, though. Maybe they'd really like their music. Hmmm. I think it would be absolutely wonderful if they (my parents) got into them (Roxy Music). Then I can transition into David Bowie, and then Yellow Magic Orchestra, and then....

Dee the Semi-Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...

The horror.
