Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Sex Pistols
Black Sabbath

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Sabbath unquestionably. Roxy and T. Rex. Giorgio Moroder, Chic and Donna Summer all likely to be excluded.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Are VU in there?
if not than whoever picks the bands goes both ways.....men & boys

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

War.

Three Dog Night.

I'm very serious about both.

Joseph McCombs, Saturday, 13 March 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd vote for War. It's ironic, but my wife just bought a Three Dog Night comp. today.

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 13 March 2004 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Star.
The Buzzcocks.
The Stooges.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Saturday, 13 March 2004 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The Replacements.

Mark M, Saturday, 13 March 2004 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

VU are in the hall.

black sabbath, who weren't as much of a slamdunk for the hall as, say, bonnie raitt and james taylor were, probably didn't help their case by loudly refusing their nomination.

the one that puzzles me and keeps me awake at night is the sex pistols. i can understand why the buzzcocks and big star (pretty damn obscure to the general populace, and commercially negligible) and chic and donna summer (not nearly as "rock"ing as, say, james taylor) aren't getting in, regardless of what they deserve. but the sex pistols just seemed automatic to me.

i remember thinking it was good that the ramones got in before the pistols, as if the hall was actually making a smart statement about who were the pioneers and who were the inheritors. i just kind of assumed the pistols would get their due this year. they were massively influential, both within and without the sphere of music. they're a cultural watershed. they rocked. and they had chart hits, for crissakes. (and, on top of all that, johnny lydon would actually be entertaining at the ceremony.)

i can't for the life of me figure out why they're not in there. roxy music is pretty is easy to figure out when it comes right down to it. but the pistols ... i just draw a blank.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 13 March 2004 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Wilco, man.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 13 March 2004 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember some mtv news thing waaaay back (like when the stones went in) asking rock fans on the street who will/should get in and some guy going 'kiss totally should be abducted into the hall of fame'. and they definitely should.

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 13 March 2004 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

who votes on this thing anyway? clive davis' maid and jann wenner's poolboy?

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 13 March 2004 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and melissa etheridge. i'm sure she has a vote.

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 13 March 2004 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Are The Talking Heads in?
isn't it 20 years after you debut comes out you can get in?
well anyway The Talking Heads

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Saturday, 13 March 2004 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

25 years after first record. talking heads are in already.

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 13 March 2004 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it is fucking insane donna summer isn't in. i mean this whole deal is auteurist bullshit obv. (the very definition), but to think the bee gees are the only disco act (or at least the only act in cuz of their disco) is fucking madness.

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 13 March 2004 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Kraftwerk?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Saturday, 13 March 2004 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

it is fucking insane donna summer isn't in.

if only that bruce springsteen cover she did had been a bigger hit - then she'd be a shoe-in!

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 13 March 2004 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

and i'm actually surprised there's as much punk/new wave in as there is - the velvets barely squeaked in, and bowie took forever to get in whereas james taylor just glided in. wtf. wenner wenner wenner (talking heads made the cover of time before they made the cover of rs cuz he deemed them too 'punk' for his mag). maybe it's a nice tourist trap (though i'd probably rather go see the emp)(depends on the time of year i guess - ichiro vs. lebron is too close to call really), and they do seem to give a career boost of sorts to touring oldies acts, but really overall this thing is fucking garbage, and has been since the beginning really - i mean no wynonie harris? still?

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 13 March 2004 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

wynonie harris was betting on his own records. that's the hold-up on that one.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 13 March 2004 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

New York Dolls.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 13 March 2004 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Cinniblount OTM re: Donna Summer, Kiss

Where the hell is Bob Seger?! Or Captain Beefheart?
Or Miles Davis, inventor of jazz-rock?
Or (even tho I've never had much use for him) Gram Parsons, inventor of country-rock?

Nonperformers: Robert Moog and maybe Jim Marshall

Some of their choices are mind-bogglingly arbitrary: Buffalo Springfield, but not Love? Tom Petty but not Seger? Queen but not Van Halen? AC/DC but not Sabbath? Velvets but not Beefheart/Stooges/MC5?

And I wish they'd show a bit of homerism and induct a coupla local heroes, Joe Walsh and Pere Ubu. (Not too many, though: Don't wanna follow the example of the Hockey Hall of Fame, which is in Toronto and has a few too many Maple Leafs who aren't particularly worthy of induction...)

Incidentally, here's a list of all inductees:

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 13 March 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

K R A F T W E R K

fer shure!!!!!!!!!!!

peepee (peepee), Saturday, 13 March 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

er, do you actually think artistic merit, historical significance, influence etc are the deciding criteria at the R&R H of F? The bottom line on any possible inductee is whether Jann Wenner has heard of them and where they fit in his his famously warped 60s-centric view of the universe. Obvious, cliched, but true. He RUNS the fucker from behind the scenes, no matter what anybody says.

lovebug starski, Saturday, 13 March 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

That dude is satan.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 13 March 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Tom Petty but not Seger? "

Seger just got in. And ya gotta realize that you're only eligible twenty-five years after your first recording, and most bands don't get in the first year they're eligible. So, while Sabbath has been blown off many many many times, other bands like the Sex Pistols - a band also hurt by their very short discography - have only been rejected some two or three times.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 13 March 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Any Hall of Fame that includes Billy Joel and the Eagles isn't worth being in anyway.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Saturday, 13 March 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What makes anyone think that Kraftwerk would want to be inducted into something called The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame??!?!?!

Dadaismus (Dada), Saturday, 13 March 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

roxy music is pretty is easy to figure out when it comes right down to it

They are? Explain it to me then please.

Not that I, you know, give a monkeys about the R&R Hall of Fame.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Saturday, 13 March 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

They mean nothing in the USA, that's why it's easy to figure

Dadaismus (Dada), Saturday, 13 March 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Any Hall of Fame that includes Billy Joel and the Eagles isn't worth being in anyway.

Ne'er truer wisdom spoke.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

>Any Hall of Fame that includes Billy Joel and the Eagles isn't worth being in anyway.

Don't forget the Turtles!

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 13 March 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Kraftwerk and ABBA.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stooges, the New York Dolls, and the Sex Pistols are not in the Hall of Fame. Surely this is a reminder that terms like "indie" still have some kind of meaning, even after we see all these bands used in commercials and such (songs in commercials not being a bad thing, but just a sign of their inclusion in our mainstream culture)

These bands (and those that followed)must still be subcultural.

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I still maintain that Wenner should be executed. for other things as well, but mostly for the R'N'R HOF.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

'rnr hof' sounds like some great idiomatic phrase in High German.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It's what the cool kids call David Hasselhoff over there. "Hey, you going to see the Hof play tonight?" "Ach, selbstverständlich ist Hoff erstaunlich."

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 13 March 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I should really know this, but are Kiss in? I know Wenner has a fatwa against them.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 March 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

do Kraftwerk even make rock n roll???

SexyDancer, Saturday, 13 March 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Do The Eagles?

LondonLee (LondonLee), Sunday, 14 March 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised Peter, Paul, and Mary haven't been inducted.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 14 March 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.irscorner.com/de/images/damned.gif

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 14 March 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

since the "early influences" category seems to mean "prewar blues," there are a looooot of great artists who should be in.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Sunday, 14 March 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

And come on, do we really want to see Good Charlotte performing "Pretty Vacant" at a Sex Pistols induction ceremony.

Now that I mention it, I kinda do.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Sunday, 14 March 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

In a better world, Greg Shaw (who started his 'zine about the time RS was getting off the ground) would have become the multimillionaire instead of Wenner.

Jeff Wright, Sunday, 14 March 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It would be quite a dream. Among other things, it would be only five more years until Spacemen 3 got in.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 March 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

If the only thing 'indie' has to define itself against these days is the bloody Rock and Roll Hall of Fame then heaven help it!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 14 March 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

the flip side of ignored greats at the R&RHofF is the way 60s icons keep getting re-inducted, cf. the Fab Four for group & solo efforts. It's like the spurious Beatles invasion anniversary this year. I'm holding out for the 40th anniversary of Lennon saying his group was bigger'n Jesus. I'm getting sicker of the 60s now than I was in the 70s.
And since EMP is apparently running out of cash, how can the HofF survive as well?
