Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

1/Franz Ferdinand "come on home"

= holy fuck, the sound of 198-something or other. It's actually pretty good, but not overwhelming. The monosynth break in the middle is good, but there isn't ewnough of it.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

monosynth sound = like on old teardrop explodes rekkids (it's come back again) I don't like the drumming.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I might pick up their album, but only if it's cheap

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

2/Elbow "Fugitive Motel"

sounds like early Peter Gabriel trying to ape the band.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

really very underwhelming. I'm tempted to skip, but a/i must do my duty and b/the next track is kings of leon, so i'm not in any hurry to hear it.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

halfway thru elbow track, notice strings like echo & the bunnymen rekkids but not as good. time is stretching out ahead of me...

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

quiet day to-day, innit?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it sounds like they're nodding off over their instruments.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

thank god it's fading out!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

3/ kings of leon "wasted time"

"someone here's wasting time" oh ha ha.

Sorry, but this band is teh sukc, SKIP.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

4/Belle and Sebastian "Stay Loose"

Jesus christ, this sounds like the Jam circa "taxmastart" WTF happened?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

This would be ok if they played w/a bit more "oomph", but it sounds a bit slack.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm hearin' you Pashmina but this CD does sound rather dire

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

This is probably the worst b&s track I've ever heard, plus it's like 6 1/2 minutes long! It's just - er... lacking in something. Actually every track so far sounds like the bands could barely be bothered playing. There's an air of "will this do" about it. I'm actually really dissapointed so far b/c I was looking forward to hearing some of this stuff.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes J0hn, it's a bit of an ordeal I must admit.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

5/ the libertines - "death on the stairs"

These people are kidding right?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, they are playing like they mean it at least, but who the fuck would want to sound like that????

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

it sounds like joe strummer fronting the senseless things!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

this track is lammo heaven. oh how i suffer.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

6/fun lovin' criminals "beautiful"

er...

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Enough. I get the message. Rock is dead.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

(pitches CD in bin)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it must have been more frustrating in the days when the only promos were lp's and you had to physically break them to make 'em fit into the trash

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Just like that other comp CD I listened to, I wanted to hear something GOOD, but this was pretty rank stuff, and actually worse than th other one, which at least had two good tracks, or was it three, I forget. that was piss weak, though. I mean F.F. were OK, but generally, everything was so half-assed? WTF?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha yes, but at least you could melt the LPS into ashtrays!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I really want(ed) to say something positive, but I can't!! I'm so sorry!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm going to go and d/l some heavy metal.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

if you investigated matters a little more than is probably worth your time, it'd probably turn out that one or two labels at most are represented on this comp, and that the other stuff is on the CD in hopes that you, the up-with-current-things reader, will listen to FF and then stick around for the rest

on the metal tip, don't miss the new Anata

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

According to the cover:

FF - domino/universal
elbow - v2/salvation
k 0 l - green wagon/universal (and some other stuff)
b&s - rough trade
libertines - rough trade (aha!!)
flc - sanctuary

What I fancy listening to right now actually is some BUDGIE!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

but I will check out Anata, thanx muchly

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 24 April 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

That B&S song is brilliant, you are insane

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 24 April 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

No he isn't, but anyway.

Pash, you boldly go where others etc. Actually I was interested to see what you thought of the Elbow -- and now I know! (I'm not thrilled by them either -- the early early stuff sorta worked in a late Talk Talk way but...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

My god that B+S track is so LIFELESS and dreary - Pash flatters them w/ that Jam comparison

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 25 April 2004 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The Libertines are just inept Strokes imitators, it transpires, fronted by Charlie Drake

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 25 April 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Pashmina should review more albums!

Dadaismus (Dada), Sunday, 25 April 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

ten months pass...
Free CD w/today's Guardian (13/03/05) 10 tracks. Looking at the lineup, my hopes are not high, but here goes anyway.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

1/fatboy slim "wonderful night"

Nothing. Not a thing. Attempting to describe this is like someone asking you what the wearther's like and it's kind of overcast, but not entirely, not warm, not cold, not quite raining. There is just nothing there to describe. There is a bat and someone is sort of rapping over the top. The rapper just mentioned "dave beckham". What the fuck is the point of this?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

2/bloc party "helicopter". Enter lammo hell, please. Mediocre, and w/o any distinguishing characteristics whatsoever. Again, what is the point of this music? I'm forgetting the tune as it passes by. It calls to mind a million support acts at newcastle riverside in the late eighties.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

3/lemon jelly "the fruity track".

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

....

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

.....

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

vaguely backwardsish electronic noise w/overlayed drums. The drums are either well-played or well-programmed, but again I'm asking myself why? What's the fucking point of this? It's just going nowhere. Oh hang on some singing has started. Oh hang on again, it's not really what you would call "dynamic". It sounds like they made an advert for tinned fruit, and they were trying to make tinned fruit "hip" in some way.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

4/mercury rev "in the wilderness". Might be ok if they stripped the drums off it. the drums are lame. Sounds vaguely like something else, but I'm not sure what, exactly.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm losing the will to live here.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

kaiser chefs "caroline yes". the best thing so far, though I can't see myself picking up the album nevertheless. Vaguely campers-ish in places.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm really starting to wish that bands in general would get the fuck over feeling some sort of need to have a drummer.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

rock drums = boring

electronic music "fours" = should be an executable offence.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

This would have been allright if it had been 2 minutes long, but it's 4.11 stuff like this needs brevity, otherwise it sounds repetitive and boring.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

halfway through!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

6/british sea power "be gone"
does at least sound like somebody needed to make it. kind of reminiscent of "liverpool scene" music w/o actually sounding like a particular band. Vaguely sea-shanty-ish tune. This is OK

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

7/annie "always too late"

"will this do?" Fucking hell. (skips)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

8/roots manuva "a haunting" eh, I can't really think of anything to say about this. it's just, you know....

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

9/ the kills "the good ones". this sounds like person a described suicide to person b, person b started a band based on this description, and the kills copied person b's band.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

(short break to fit inner tube in wheelchair wheel and sell set of stepladders A LESS BORING ACTIVITY THAN LISTENING TO THIS CD/!!1)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

OK, LAST TRack

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

hal "what a lovely dance".

oh hang on the kills are still plodding away (skips)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

vin ordinaire (hits eject) (throws cd in bin)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

kind of like the housemartins, that last one.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

in general - chord changes that I have heard 100s of times, lame, plodding playing feel, general sense that one has heard it before many times. shit drumming. It's kind of like pop ate itself already, and this is pop eating the shit that's left over after it digested itself in the hope of gleaning some extra nurtrition THERE IS NONE LEFT. IT IS SHIT. Gah, fuck this. Back to work...

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, the final score w/r/t who is the "publisher"

emi music 4
universal music 4

others 2

I felt happier before I listened to this. WTF, come on there must be better than this?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
There was another one of these last Saturday, but after the last one I just couldn't bring myself to listen to it.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

What do you make of the new Van Der Graaf Generator album?

Deluxe (Damian), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

That is a serious question, and not a well-you-obviously-don't-like-new-music question, as it happens.

Deluxe (Damian), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard it yet - I didn't think it was actually out for another week or so...

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, it's out here, and here being New Zealand.

Deluxe (Damian), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

!!! I'll take a look in the record shop on the way home tonight, thanks!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

xpost it sounds like joe strummer fronting the senseless things!!

-- Pashmina (pashmin...), April 24th, 2004.

apparently (according to a pretty reliable source) members of said band (Mark Keds or Cass Brown, I forget which) have had a hand in writing (credited to a psuedonym) some of The Libertines songs, including said big hit 'Can't Stand Me Now'. OTM!

basic lurker, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

Good grief!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

was that the mark keds in the recent artrocker mailout as well ?

"
Hi Tom, Paul & everyone!
That piece about the nme just made my evening-blinding!
Thank you
x mark keds
"

so he's obv still watching the scene if responding to Toms rants-n-raves.

i sense a senseless things revival .. though they wont be able to afford Jamie Hewlett these days .. though with Cass being part of Gorillaz you just never know ..
