Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Hey Sundar, yeah, I can go ahead and do the Sharrock. This is just way too painful though. This is my shortlist of not-yet-nominated favorite 90s albums here (I don't think any of these have been nominated yet)-

Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages
Sainkho Namtchylak - Lost Rivers
Dead C - Harsh 70s Reality
Fushitsusha - Double Live
Sonic Youth - Washing Machine
Slint - Spiderland
Gorguts - Obscura
Shrimp Boat - Cavale
Polwechsel - Polwechsel
Royal Trux - Sweet Sixteen
Oval - Systemisch
Henry Threadgill - Too Much Sugar For A Dime
Jaap Blonk - Flux de Bouche
Mountain Goats - Zopilote Machine
Monster Magnet - Spine of God
Gastr del Sol - Upgrade and Afterlife
Big John Patton - Blue Planet Man
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magick
Voice Crack - Earflash
Tall Dwarfs - Weeville
Fred Anderson / Mariliyn Crispell / Hamid Drake - Destiny
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
The Ex and Tom Cora - Scrabbling at the Lock

Rolling Stones - Voodoo Lounge
Ornette Coleman - Tone Dialing
Eight Bold Souls - Sideshow
Jim O'Rourke & Gunter Müller - Slow Motion
Syl Johnson - Back in the Game
Sun City Girls - Torch of the Mystics
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
Plastikman - Sheet One
Alastair Galbraith - Morse
Dwight Yoakam - This Time
Clusone Trio - Clusone Trio
The Gories - Outta Here
Kevin Drumm - Kevin Drumm

Obviously those are just personal faves that probably wouldn't garner many (if any?) votes, but I hate to see them denied the chance. Maybe there's another holdout out there that they appeal to? Realistically, I'm thinking of either Ex/Cora, Shrimp Boat, Polwechsel, Royal Trux or Ornette with my other nomination...

Reed Moore (diamond), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Junior Kimbrough - All Night Long

have you done nominations yet diamond? cos i might nominate this one (not that anyone will vote for it)

and yeah royal trux does belong on the list

amateur!!st, Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Cool, I got your back on Sainkho.

I'd vote for Threadgill's Makin'a Move, Fushitsusha's Allegorical Misunderstanding or Withrawe. . ., and Ornette's Three Women - not as familiar with the ones you list. I'll probably vote for "The Diamond Sea" on the track list so I don't know if I'd also vote for the album but I might.

Pan Sonic's A still hasn't come up yet, has it?!

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago)

No, I haven't nominated yet, Am; Sundar and I were working out a kind of deal though, I think, where I am gonna nominate the Sonny Sharrock album. So that only leaves one spot :(

And yeah, I was really leaning towards that Royal Trux disc; spent the weekend, two weekends ago, listening to it repeatedly. Like three or four times over the weekend. And it really is outstanding. I think I'm in love with that record now more than at any other time since it came out... So many great little melodic fragments and Hagerty's playing is continually exciting. I think it's their best record. And nothing by them has been nominated. And yet, I'd love to nominate another Jazz record. The Polwechsel and O'Rourke-affiliated stuff is all kind of important in seeing the way toward the new breed of quiet improv. and Big John Patton made an unexpectedly great record. and the Shrimp Boat is a sentimental favorite. and the Ex and Tom Cora should really be on a list of 90s stuff. AH well, too hard.

Reed Moore (diamond), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:18 (twenty years ago)

oh man harsh 70s... would probably make my list too, and the sam prekop solo album maybe.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago)

or maybe the sea and cake's the fawn.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago)

15 is not enough.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago)

it's probably only worth nominating those albums which a lot of people have heard.... the dead c would totally count (though i don't like that record too much, not my thing).

amateur!!st, Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago)

"what people have heard" is kind of relative.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago)

i probably haven't heard half of the albums list so far, and i hardly feel guilty for that.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago)

of course, but i was thinking of stuff like "Fred Anderson / Mariliyn Crispell / Hamid Drake - Destiny" -- prob a great record but...

amateur!!st, Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:25 (twenty years ago)

it's probably only worth nominating those albums which a lot of people have heard

oh yeah, you're totally right; I wasn't like, trying to showboat with that big long list of stuff -- they are records that meant something to me at some point during the 90s, and I thought I'd see if anyone agreed (like you w/ kimbrough). But yeah, I'm not gonna nominate a real obscure one just for the hell of it. I'll probably just do the Royal Trux. Or the Ex. or ornette. hm.

Reed Moore (diamond), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:26 (twenty years ago)

I think Homework has been nominated, hasn't it?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I am definetely nominating the first MIMEO release (1998).

I will nominate a Dead C ('clyma est mort' or 'operation...' are better but 'harsh...' is a good summation of everything they've done) or fushitsusha's double live though i'd love to nominate harry pussy's 'what was music?' or ground zero- 'revolutionary pekinese opera'.

oval has already been nominated; love to nominate that sun city girls or spiderland but its not gonna happen.

I've got one of the tracks and I'm thinking abt another one.

P.S. it might be a miracle if any of this gets into the top 100 ho ho.

x-post: yeah nominate royal trux, how about 'twin infinitives' or isn't that from the 90s?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago)

yes 'Homework' was nominated a while back

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago)

god that kimbrough record is amazing. sort of a last gasp of a dying genre...

amateur!!st, Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Has there been any Diamanda at all? I think I've d/led whatever 90s albums she did that I didn't have so I'm willing to back any of them. Julio mentioned Schrei X, which is good. I was also just considering nominating "Gloomy Sunday" for the tracks list.

xpost: Julio - RPO would probably make my top 5. I haven't heard the other albums you mention.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:34 (twenty years ago)

I should have assumed Homework was; I didn't check the most recent updated list, but I remembered it had gone a while without being mentioned..

I did know Oval had been nominated, I just like Systemische a lot. But good point Julio.

I think Twin Infinitives is bit too obscurantist. I mean, I love those guys but I lying if I said that's the first record of theirs I reach for...

Reed Moore (diamond), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:38 (twenty years ago)

ok I think I'll nominate Dead C and MIMEO (i'll do it later today, just in case someone wants to er, say something). you might nominate RPO, i'll leave that for you if you want, sundar (of course there is already one RPO record in the list already).

somebody plz nominate fushitsusha.

I've pretty much decided on the tracks.

Tag Team - "Whoomp! (There It Is)"

I think the R. Kelly is definitely going on there, so I need to pick one from the remaining. The fact that "California Love" and "Believe" finally got nominated helped to narrow this down for me.

Blind Melon - "No Rain"!

"Interstate Love Song" is cool too.

A reminder that stevem's lists of nominations are constantly available from the link at the top of nominations thread.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Sainkho's up there now, Reed. It's all up to you: I think Sonny might actually be able to make the final list.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 9 September 2004 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh my! There's just one day left and no one has nominated "There she goes" by The La's. Also there's very little by Suede (c'mon: "Metal Mickey", "Animal Nitrate", "Trash" were all great.)

daavid (daavid), Thursday, 9 September 2004 21:41 (twenty years ago)

has any elastica been nominated yet for either poll?

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 9 September 2004 21:59 (twenty years ago)

I was confused and thought the deadline was tonight. More suggestions:

Fred Frith - Upbeat, Ayaya Moses, Eye to Ear, Step Across the Border
Bill Frisell - This Land, Live with Joey Baron & Kermit Driscoll (95), Blues Dream
Pavement - "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence" (only Pavement song I'd consider voting for and it's GR8!)
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - "Bellbottoms"
PJ Harvey - "Sheela-na-Gig"
Soundgarden - "Jesus Christ Pose"
Tool - "Sober"
Big Wreck - "That Song"
Beck - "Sexx Laws"
"Smells Like Teen Spirit"
The Offspring - "Self-Esteem"

Fuck, I'm almost reconsidering my ballot.

I have no idea! I just saw an ad for it Jockey Slut. His last comp, "Traxxx from the Nile", is excellent.

Quick googling shows he has *two* albums in the pipeline, info here and
here.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago)

While there is still time, someone should nominate Back For Good by Take That and Waterfalls by TLC. I am resisting the temptation to create a false account to make it happen...
