The Bass Thing (aka Rob Jones) of the Wonder Stuff

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It's too early to judge with Jhon Balance ... but Coil were already legends. You could say the same about the Ramones^3 -- bizarrely (and somewhat sadly), their reputation feels unnaffected by the death of three members.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Marc Bolan. (Hear me out)...

Just after he died, a couple months afterwards anyway, his new single came out as scheduled. "Celebrate Summer" had already flopped, and "Crimson Moon" made no impression.

It took a long time for the "Marc on Wax" thing to happen.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, didn't see this thread before posting on the other:

Mediocrity elevated to posthumous legend is probably more common than the flipside, the talented ones who died young but inspired no great mythology: Mel Street, Minnie Ripperton, Earl Hooker, Lyman Bostock. Who else?

joe strummer. probably 'cause he didn't die quite young enough.

wtf? there a lot of people who deify him!

latebloomer: But when the monkey die, people gonna cry. (latebloomer), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

well yeah, but all those people deified him while he was alive and well. his death did nothing for his legend, and within the wide world of pop culture deification, there was certainly room for it to grow.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

D Boon is dead? i didn't know that.

that really, really bums me out. i was listening to Double Nickels in the Dime when I read that.. this "Dr. Wu" is for you, BOON!

speaking of "wu" -- ol' dirty bastard, anyone?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The folks who said Jaco and Falco on this thread are wrong, and I presume that they don't spend too much time around bass players or German speakers.

Hrm. As of 6:13 PM CST:

Acts that did *NOT* become hugely deified legends -- justifiably or unjustifiably -- after their deaths. (68 new answers)
Thin Lizzy: Classic or Dud? (3 new answers, 53 total)

Live and Dangerous smokes 95% of all greatest-hits compilations by any hard rock band in history and essentially proves they were the missing link between Springsteen and Van Halen without even being from anywhere near Asbury Park or Pasadena. Most of their legacy is left to the occasional t-shirt appearance in a G'n'R video or a Hold Steady namedrop (good endorsements, granted), but they deserve to be namedropped at least as often as, say, the MC5. (Particularly in Strokes reviews; "Look What the Wind Blew In" = 50x the sonic template that VU is)

The folks who said Jaco and Falco on this thread are wrong, and I presume that they don't spend too much time around bass players or German speakers.

Falco had hits outside the German speaking world too. Back then.

As for Jaco, I wasn't the one who mentioned him, but I'd say he was a legend among bass players way before his death.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 28 April 2005 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris Bell — he should have gotten all the "OMG" that Alex Chilton gets, and more.

Curious George (1/6 Scale Model) (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 28 April 2005 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Agree about Chris Bell. Chilton may have given the world "September Gurls", but Chris Bell gave the world everything else that was great about Big Star.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 28 April 2005 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Elliot Smith has justifiably not been canonised since, nor due to the method of, his death. I hope.

mentalist (mentalist), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

the lack of public appearance probably stiffed the promotion of the album

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM re: Layne Staley.
Bullshit: re Joe Strummer. He was a legend before he died, so maybe you didn't notice an influx of bandwagoners post-death because there were already legions of fans mourning his death. BAH!!
Alex: I have an extra pistol, re the Wendy O Williams shootout with Jack Cole. I'm packing if you need backup. "Best forgotten". DOUBLE BAH!!

I don't know if he could become a hugely deified legend, but right now I really want him to be: Paul Hester of Crowded House. He's only been dead for a brief time, but I don't want people to stop talking about him.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i WAS gonna say big l, but on the other hand he always gets shout-outs. but maybe he still belongs here, b/c big l hasn't become deified in society at large.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

As for Jaco, I wasn't the one who mentioned him, but I'd say he was a legend among bass players way before his death.

Read one "not enough". He's a legend among bass players. That's hardly being deified.

diedre mousedropping (Dave225), Thursday, 28 April 2005 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I think Jaco was deified all right, before he died.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 28 April 2005 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, he more or less invented the fretless bass. If that doesn't make him a legend, then what would possibly make somebody a legend?
