Would trade your music collection for every album Robert Christgau declared a "Must To Avoid"?

I might. I know the stuff in my collection really well and I haven't heard the overwhelming majority of these albums. It'd be a hoot to only have these albums at your disposal. I love Hysteria and Great Adventures Of Slick Rick already and like Champagne Jam and Imperial F.F.R.R. so its not like I wouldn't have anything to go to when I want a familiar favorite. My Ipod shuffle would be an insane asylum. I'd buy a few old favorites eventually but probably not as many as I'd think.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

there are albums he rates lower than these but I only counted albums that have a little stop sign next to them in the CG columns on his site. No stop sign on Happy People/U Saved Me despite the D.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

That's a nicely bizarre cross-section, but I mean that positively, in that he's just as annoyed with various obvious sacred cows as with those dang young hip things ('young' and 'hip' changing definition as time progresses).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

i knew this would be a miccio thread.

to let - flats (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

what does he have against scott walker?

to let - flats (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Shit, I listen to Fear's The Record like, every week.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember the specifics, you can look up what he said here, but I remember he was bummed Marshall Crenshaw liked it. What are all these rockcrit details doing in my brain? gah.

You could throw some sick parties with these albums.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

x-post re walker

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

miccio, if you throw a "must to avoid" party i will fly back east for it, for realz.

to let - flats (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

Duran Duran - Rio? I have little faith in this list.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

haha jbr you're actually the ILXor I figured would own more of these albums than anyone else. That's a compliment.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

i dont really understand this list. is it meant to be the worst record by well known bands? i dont get blue bell knoll or speak and spell being here at all, in that case

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

i have a few of them. (xpost)

to let - flats (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

random albums in the '70s & '80s Consumer Guide articles (less so in the '90s) have a "Must To Avoid" stop sign next to them. This is a list of all of them.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

albums on this list i know and like:

10CC: The Original Soundtrack
CURTIS MAYFIELD: America Today
THE CAPTAIN AND TENNILLE: Love Will Keep Us Together
WILLIE NELSON: Red Headed Stranger (he changed the grade from a C to a B- eventually, though)
MARVIN GAYE: I Want You
ABBA: Arrival
ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN: Heaven Up Here
DEPECHE MODE: Speak and Spell
DURAN DURAN: Rio
THE ROLLING STONES: Undercover
DR. BUZZARD'S ORIGINAL SAVANNAH BAND: Calling All Beatniks!
CYNDI LAUPER: True Colors
L.L. COOL J: Bigger and Deffer
DEF LEPPARD: Hysteria
BRYAN FERRY: Bête Noire
DEBBIE GIBSON: Out of the Blue
SLICK RICK: The Great Adventures of Slick Rick
SCOTT WALKER: It's Raining Today: The Scott Walker Story (1967-70)

of these, i pretty much adore the scott walker, slick rick, and marvin gaye records. the others i have more mixed feelings about. i agree that the willie nelson album could do without some of the bridging material, but the rest is gold.

sometimes i wish xgau were a little less flippant, and a little more wishy-washy (in the sense of acknowledging uncertainty and respecting other POVs), but then again he wouldn't have the same critical voice if that were the case.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

one of xgau's more stubborn biases seems to be against certain forms of pretension and self-seriousness, especially music that makes some claim (or xgau thinks makes some claim) to literariness. (although xgau's a complex and cagey guy so there are always exceptions.) i think this skepticism is healthy, but i think xgau has it in too large a measure. and it prevents him from hearing the virtues of certain bands. we all have "blind spots" like this though, i guess.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

answer the question, dude.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

no

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

i mean, no to the thread question

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

but you didn't actually expect me to say "yes," did you? i'm not really one of those "omg this osmonds lp is the Best Thing Ever" dudes.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

no. no you're not.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

here we only get high on the nat'ral stuff you know?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I don't know those records very well, but looking over the list, I can easily imagine that most of them are pretty bad, so no, I definitely would not make that trade.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 4 June 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Anthony, just go look in a dumpster and you'll be able to find all of these.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Unrest? Imperial FFRR? Did Mark Robinson beat up Christgau's wife at a concert or something?

dlp9001, Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

That album's kind of corny, don't you think?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Bigger & Deffer!!!??? He's nutz. Oh well.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine says Arrival is the best Abba album.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

it is, in a rockist sense.

to let - flats (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

Dude, 'splain!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Let X = rock

And then there was sound
And then there was guitar
And then there was Bon Scott singing "Dancing Queen"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

It's best because it rocks most, in other words? (I don't know the album.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

it's best because it's the most "mature" songwritingwise and productionwise, and that's why rockcrit types think it's the best.

to let - flats (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Saying it's rockist implies that they're biased, of course. Are they biased?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

by rockist i just mean that rockists who like abba would say it was the best abba album.

to let - flats (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

not that there's any "rock" in it.

to let - flats (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Not to belabor the point (!), but is it possible for someone to think it was their best album and it not be a rockist view?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

depends on what you mean by rockist.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

you people say rockist one more time on this thread and I'm gonna start busting heads.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

ROCKIST ROCKIST ROCKIST

to let - flats (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

*starts busting heads*

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Most on the list (that I've heard)are mediocre, some are truly ass. The only ones I'd really go to bat for:

MARVIN GAYE: I Want You
ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN: Heaven Up Here
WILLIE NELSON: Red Headed Stranger

and I wouldn't dismiss these out of hand:

MAGAZINE: Secondhand Daylight
DEPECHE MODE: Speak and Spell
SCOTT WALKER: It's Raining Today: The Scott Walker Story (1967-70)

Otherwise, hahahaha.

So the answer is NO.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

everything i hear about christgau makes me want to know even less about him.

jones (actual), Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

'Arrival'?? 'Journeys to Glory'??? 'Secondhand Daylight'?????? GET ONE RED DOG UP YA XGAU.

moley, Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I weep for thee, Oingo Boingo.

NickB (NickB), Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Why did he dislike George Harrison so much? Somewhere to England isn't the best of his late '70s/early '80s albums, but Christgau was super down on the guy and a little snide!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

There are amazing albums on this list. Heaven Up Here by the Bunnymen abd Blue Bell Knoll by the Cocteau Twins. And just what the fuck does he have against the defenseless likes of Arrival by Abba?

Christgau is, was and ever shall be....an asshole.

Christ Child (hilarious punk-rock cash-in on Buddah that is probably a bunch of session musicians trying to bullshit the public).

Yeah, that record rules. And so does the Tubes one!

THE DODGERS: Love on the Rebound

Pick Hit that month was by a band called the Yankees -- One of my fave CG jokes ever (and this reminds me I still want to hear the Yankees album).

Consumer Guide Reviews:
High 'n' Inside [Big Sound, 1978]
These New Yorkers play it fast and loose enough to dismay pop technicians and even offend people a little. Indeed, I was already hooked on their boisterous Strangeloves/Standells tribute when it struck me that maybe Jon Tiven's wandering pitch, which I find cute, meant the record was warped. It's more likely, though, that his voice has begun to change in his mid-twenties, inspiring him to cover "Bad Boy" (well) and write (a good) one called "Take It Like a Man." A hit that proves once again that rock and roll is about having the spirit, knowing the tricks, and taking the risks. Ivan Julian is DH. A-

I'm not sure I agree that a) rock critics really use innovation as a chief criterion and b) that the absence of innovation is what critics have disliked about albums like Satanic Majesties and Topographic Oceans. But there's some good music on your list. I'm glad you made it.

Sundar, Sunday, 13 January 2008 04:53 (seventeen years ago)

"Christ Child (hilarious punk-rock cash-in on Buddah that is probably a bunch of session musicians trying to bullshit the public)."

"Yeah, that record rules."

I'd genuinely like to know who did this record...sleazy, but as good as any "legit" punk record that came out in '77.

Rev. Hoodoo, Sunday, 13 January 2008 09:02 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not sure I agree that a) rock critics really use innovation as a chief criterion and b) that the absence of innovation is what critics have disliked about albums like Satanic Majesties and Topographic Oceans.

It's usually either that or the "bad is good" argument (which was sort of there even before punk). Your two examples are a case of the latter rather than the former. My piece on "Satanic Majesties" comes soon, and I will write a bit more about that there.
