If you were DJing on New Year's Eve what would killer tune at midnight be?

or rather, what should my secret weapon be? I need something with mass appeal that will slay all

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Thursday, 15 December 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

"Funky New Year's" by the Eagles

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 15 December 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Disco 2000

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Thursday, 15 December 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

You should play "New Year's Day" by U2 and like you've done something really clever.

Kinkro, Thursday, 15 December 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking more NYLipps, but that Eagles song intrigues.

Disco 2000 bit too "naff" for the party i'm playing at; NYLipps too well known....

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Thursday, 15 December 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Outkast - B.O.B. slays all

pinder (pinder), Thursday, 15 December 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

I was going to say NY Lipps when I saw this title! Surely you need something fairly well-known so the crowd can whoop! whoop! and get jumping up and down near your booth, spilling drinks on your decks/laptop?

"Zdarlight" by Digitalism. I'm actually off this NYE, not DJing, I would be a bit miffed except in a way it's good to have the time off.

Orbital - mixing Chimes into the chimes of Big Ben in...er...1996/1997 - you can hear it on some Radio 1 mix somewhere - that was awesome, but obviously a bit old.

How about the remix of Franz Ferdinand that just rocks and rocks...Erol Alkans. Or (slightly older) his Alter Ego remix and then you've got the crowd going mad in the background and everyone will think that everyone's going mad and will go mad too (yo know in case they're not going mad anyway...) and it's acey.

On a completely different slant..i.e. if you just want to calm everything down - Some Other Time song by Mr Tony Bennett. Lovely.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

The richard x remix of bizarre love triangle! familiar but in a way new and so so joyous.

baby i'm waiting (cis), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

That Rock the Casbah / Stevie Wonder "Uptight" bootleg. Even your grandma would wobble.

And off to the YSI thread I go...

I think my DJ buddy Piscesboy would go for the Brightside JLC track too, or perhaps the Tom Morel's Pink Noise remix of 'All these things..', kicking in with the cheers and whoops and letting that chimey riff rise up. Failing that it'd have to be one of the big tracks of the year, 'Dare'? Richard X's remix of 'BLT'? The Alkan remix of FF is always good but mix into the original at around the 5 minute mark for full effect.

ha, xpost on the RX

DAVID BOWIE'S "Let's dance".. easy in the "ahhhh, ahhh" in line with the countdown and let the klimax hit midnight. Powerful.

Or, silence and then SMITHS "This Charming Man", so that the first klimax hits midnight..

"the Superstitious/Bootylicious mashup"

I've never even heard that but I imagine if it came on at the stroke of midnight I'd gouge my eardrums out.

Renard, Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Saint Etienne "He's on the Phone," followed by Max Tundra remix of "Do You Want To."

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

It's might be lame, but I'm guessing someone will be playing "Drop The Pressure"

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Renard, it might not be your cup of tea, but in a drunken, mixed-crowd party DJ scenario, it is a floor-filler (especially with the ladies). It's actually one of the best mashups I've heard - perfectly matched tempo, key, structure, etc (FYI it's the Superstitious instrumental music with acapella Bootylicious overtop, which you might have guessed). The odd touch comes at the end - the flute riff from Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer". :/

Unless of course you're DJing some uber-hip night of microhouse or something, and then of course this track would be pointless...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

nah, I hear ya, didnt mean to be a dick about it

to me it seems like taking two somewhat overplayed tracks and multiplying 'em together .... I hear Superstitious on the jukebox literally every time I go to a bar, and Bootylicious has been on 800 mashups

I'm all in favor of the crowd pleasing jamz though

I will admit to doing the U2 thing tho' ...

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Late New Year's Eve, paper hat on your head
It's hard to believe you'll ever be dead.
But that dream where you're falling
you've had since you're five
is a bird on your shoulder who whispers goodbye.

Evil Knievel shot up from dead grass.
I loved him better each time he crashed.
Liza Minnelli spent a month in her bed
certain that Skylab would fall on her head.

One night I dreamed that I dug my own grave
and climbed down inside to patiently wait.
Down in the ground I breathed the warm air
and blackbirds flew down to nest in my hair.

What is moving will be still.
What's been gathered will disperse.
What's been built up will collapse.
All your dreams fulfilled.

I've decided on a What Time Is Love medley starting with the Acid Brass version, then the breaks version, then a soul-breaks bootleg that also has Rockitt and Papau New Guinea then Rex the Dog mix of Drop the Pressure then a mash Destiny's Lose Myself/Drop the Pressure then more of KLF What Time Is Love: some of the late 80s versions. Then Westbam Old School, BabyPeople

WILL die!!!!!!! People will fall in LOVE

BTW, has anyone heard the Villalobos version of What Time Is Love?

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Thursday, 15 December 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's good in a way that bespeaks quiet desperation and wearisome drug psychosis.

PLEASE HELP ME, I cannot sleep

Thanks

Lee Taylor, Monday, 2 January 2006 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Lee, it's Insomnia (Moody Mix)...

and it was, funnily enough, the tune that I played on this NY's eve!

(Big Ben is not in the middle of the track, though, it's at the very beginning if I'm not mistaken)

That Timecode thing is incredible even now, although now it's probably the minimal house equivalent of Kick Out The Jams or something WHICH IS AS IT SHOULD BE.

The minutes between midnight and 12.05am on January 1st are no time for credibility in anything.
