BASS Y'ALL!

Is that really what he says? I have always wondered. It always sounded like "BETA" to me, as if he's cursing his luck for not buying a VHS VCR.

Voodoo, voodoo, voodoo ray.

(usual pub quiz question: which artist did "Voodoo Ray" inadvertently return to the Top 40 singles chart after a 24-year absence?)

(I always thought it was DANGER!!)

I read that the track was originally supposed to have been "Voodoo Rage", but that was too long for Gerald's old sampler.

There's another voice which turns up (not the "Voodoo Ray" voice) somewhere along the way which I am still not entirely convinced isn't Jimmy Savile.

Peter Cook?

All that "Voodoo Ray" makes me think now is that a dance competition is about to start and I must impress my girlfriend if she is going to invite me in for coffee.

Peter Cook is the correct answer, sampled from the Bo Duddley sketch off the first Derek and Clive album.

one year passes...

Today at school, sick to the extent of feeling like everything was a source of constant suffering, exhausted, and anxious, I was suddenly overcome by an immense urge to listen to Voodoo Ray, and now that I'm at home, I have, and, just as it always is, it is soooooo fucking good.

I'm sure there's a little sample in here of Jimmy Saville saying "Now then, now then."

just getting into this guy this year, and basically, I like everything I've heard up through Black Secret Technology. His acid house stuff is really good, and always a little "off", which lots of little details that I wouldn't necessarily expect from straight ahead house. The breakbeat/dnb stuff is arguably even better, but I love the fact that since he was doing all this stuff right at the moments it was all happening, there's tons of odd hybrid versions of pretty much every big dance trend in the UK circa '88-'95.

I love the track he did with Lady Miss Kier

El Tomboto, Monday, 11 September 2017 17:46 (eight years ago)

And everything on BST, and even his remix of Oxbow Lakes which has basically nothing to do with the original afaict

His track on Trance Europe Express 4 was what got me into him. Really unique sounding at the time, still is, really.

Was watching this the other day I'd forgotten that thing about the infowars lad being a 303 enthusiast and here is he enjoying geralds session in the comments

I mean to check out this album from 2006, love 'sweet you' from it, though its something of an outlier

oddly the phrase Mark G quotes is the only result for itself in all of Google

Heck, Today let's sing, hum or whatever: Voodoo Ray by A Guy Called Gerald

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 12 September 2017 03:02 (eight years ago)

I've seen Marcello Carlin use it on Twitter a few times in reference to non-establishment hit singles that the usual British music outlets had to begrudgingly cover.

Yeah, I sort-of nicked it off Marcello. It's a sort-of catchphrase to do with Dale Winton on "Pick of the Pops" or something like it. Sort-of.

Cupple tings:

I'm not sure if it's actually Peter Cook on the record, but.

Either way, the other sample is (or isn't) Dudley shouting "LATER!" from the same sketch(Bo Dudley)
