I have yet to tire of "Frankenstein". There's an Allman Bros song that was a hit, and it instrumental, but I can't remember the name. Anyway, it's pretty good.

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

Old Grey Whistle Test perf. of Frankenstein is hilarious/genius - Winters takes FOUR solos on FOUR diff't instruments!! Including the ARP freakout at the end.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

"Apache" rules all. My favorite Focus instra-mental is "Sylvia." (Although it may be more instra than mental.)

Chuck B, Friday, 27 January 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

Allmans toon of what you sepak is "Jessica," methinks.

veronica moser (veronica moser), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Lot's of great Allman Bros. instrumental epics.
My favorite is "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed."
Another one is "Sailing Across the Devil's Blue Sea"...or something.

oops: "speak"

veronica moser (veronica moser), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

"hocus pocus," with "apache" trailing by an eyelash

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

hocus pocus by focus is unstoppable

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite is "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed."

I think this is the one I'm talking about; cheery, dual-guitar melody. A snappy tune!

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

Great concert moment -- a few years back, in Syosset-Woodbury park, Edgar Winter was doing a free summer show. After the first two songs, most of the blue-haired ladies had packed up their folding chairs. The "bass player," and many of the harmonies, were on tape. When it came to the jam in Frankenstein, the other dueling percussionist was also on tape. Edgar would go "thuda-dum-dum," then the tape would go "thuda-dum-dum," like that. My little group exchanged glances. It was magic.

I think Hocus Pocus should be disqualified on account of the yodeling...
but it is a heavy tune.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

What's that ELO instrumental with the acoustic guitar breakdown?

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

"fire on high" i think? backwards singing classic rock staple?

b'angelo, Friday, 27 January 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

no, the cheery one is def. "Jessica." "…Elizabeth Reed" is the southern rawk version of A Love Supreme…

veronica moser (veronica moser), Friday, 27 January 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

Zappa's Peaches En Regalia outshines em all for it's blend of serious and humorous composition

bahto habito zappato, Friday, 27 January 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 27 January 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

The SF radio station KFOG used to do something every once in a while called "Sledgehammers," in which listeners would call in with their tales of why a song made such a significant and lasting impact on them. Once, several years ago, a guy called in with a swirling story about how "Frankenstein" always reminded him of when he was undergoing shock therapy in 1973 or thereabouts.

Therefore, everything mentioned above >> "Frankenstein."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 28 January 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Is not. Speaking as a one-time squirt who took an ass-beating for blowing my paper route money on an album with this for a cover
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000024Z3.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
I have to defend the classicness of "Frankenstein".

Also search "Scorpio".

brianiac (briania), Saturday, 28 January 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

oh shit, i forgot about Dennis Coffey. Scorpio's great! bastards at the record store wouldn't sell it to me one time because they weren't done listening to it.

team jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 28 January 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

Does "Keem-O-Sabe" pre-date the time frame? 'Cuz I'd take that one over anything else in this thread, actually.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 28 January 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

"Keem-O-Sabe" just BARELY predates the time frame (1969).

"Popcorn," "Joy" and "TSOP" are right in the time frame - as much as I like 'em, probably not "rock" enuff for the thread.

Christ, I could name DOZENS of favourites, including most everything already mentioned. So, I'll ignore the "other" qualification and choose from the specific four:

"Apache" - Like it, but to this day, I don't know if I've ever heard the original, just the Ventures cover. The Ventures Play Telstar, The Lonely Bull, And... was one of my favourite LPs as a 7-year old, and was also where I first heard "Tequila", "Green Onions" and more.
"Peaches" - One of Zappa's most enjoyable/singalongable melodies, sophisticated yet without the usual annoying herky-jerkiness.
"Hocus Pocus" - Such a ludicrous record. Makes me grin everytime. The Dutch have the strangest sense of humour.
"Frankenstein" - Brain-melter! That riff, that drum duet, that ARP freakout...man.

"Frankenstein" is the winnah!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 30 January 2006 06:13 (nineteen years ago)

"Apache" by an enormous distance (shocker)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 30 January 2006 06:37 (nineteen years ago)

Christ, I could name DOZENS of favourites, including most everything already mentioned. So, I'll ignore the "other" qualification and choose from the specific four:

name more! keep em sort of arranged the way these other four are (not just rockin' jazz choons)

"Apache" - Like it, but to this day, I don't know if I've ever heard the original, just the Ventures cover.

the version i was talking about is the Incredible Bongo Band's version.

team jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 30 January 2006 07:07 (nineteen years ago)

I think I actually prefer "Sylvia" to "Hocus Pocus". Some other suggestions:

"Theme One" - Van der Graaf Generator
"Machine Gun" - The Commodores
"Pop Plinn" - Alan Stivell
