What Was The First Song You Heard This Year?

The Freaky Trigger 2000 Round-Up kicks off here! A question every day in December (every day that I'm online, that is). And first off - what was the first music you heard in the year 2000? (And was it a good choice?)

Tom, Thursday, 30 November 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)

I rang in the new year omming, and I'm gonna consider that the first song I heard in 2000, because I don't know who was responsible for what sounded like a Cher for excessively tasteful, indiscriminately love- happy BoBo (bourgeois bohemian) mod-hippies, and don't care to know either. The first thing I heard all the way through was either "Like A Prayer" or "Red Alert", both of which my friends agreed were good calls, though the dancing in the sequined dress and silver boa was not.

Hmmm, I really don't remember. And even though I mention it in my blog on 25 Dec 1999, I don't really say if I _did_ listen to Godspeed You Black Emperor! I think I probably just listened to "So What" by Miles Davis, because I felt miserable and wanted some solace.

Er, 31 Dec 1999 of course.

Greenwich, 11.45, December 31st. Off we trot to the riverside to watch the fireworks, only to find our way blocked by the unnecessary and scary police presence that pervades the Millennium borough on this particular night. We end up joining a crowd who have been similarly disappointed only to find that as the chimes strike midnight they are singing "Angels" by Robbie Williams. Is this any way to greet the 21st century? We are outraged! So much so that myself and Dr Brooker start singing - oh dear - "Ask" by the Smiths in a drunken attempt to drown them out.

I indulged in the completely obvious and played "Disco 2000" by Pulp. No, I don't care what you think. And no, I didn't play "1999" by Prince right before midnight either. ;-)

Roxy Music, "Virginia Plain." A call to arms disguised as a plea for hedonist delight -- there is no better way to jumpstart a millennium. "We've got to search something new."

May I shamefully admit at this point that I actually can't remember what the first piece of music I heard this year was?

I know I watched the exact turn-of-the-year on BBC1, then went back on the net just to confirm that the world hadn't fallen apart :). But I genuinely can't remember what I played, in fact I suspect I may not have played *anything* until the next day.

I listened to Momus's "Stars Forever" on the *evening* of 1st January, that much I remember, though I must have listened to something earlier that day, but it's just slipped my mind. The main thing I remember about that weekend was publishing my first, desperately amateurish, website, which I did at about 8.30 pm on 31st December 1999.

"Mambo No. 5" Not my choice. Obviously.

"all that glitters" - DIV After that I threw up my guts and fell asleep, much to my girlfriend's chagrin.

Something in Cantonese (I was in Hong Kong)

Sterling Clover, Monday, 4 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)

The same song it is every fucking year, Auld Lang Syne (though bolstered by an unconvincing performance fromt he coolest man of the third millenium).

Pete, Monday, 4 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Pulp's Disco 2000 (OK, OK, VERY original!).....I didn't have anything better to do and I was VERY depressed that night.

I listened to it, I lied back and I thought...."Is that fucking all?". Oh well, I spent the rest of the day swearing at bullshitters who thought Sydeny's fireworks were somehow any good (it was a load of shit) and I watched the UK celebrations, desperatly wishing I was there. Oh well.

Phil Paterson, Monday, 4 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Um, a minute before 2000: 1999 by Prince. A minute after 2000: Auld Lang Syne.

I can't help it if New Rochelle clubs are uninventive.

Ally, Monday, 4 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)

i don't remember, but the first record that i sang along with this year was liz phair's 'exile in guyville.'

this was before i put on the blonde wig and, uh, crooned 'teenage whore.'

maura, Monday, 4 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Pete, Pete, your memory is faulty. For it was not just "Auld Lang Syne" that the Coolest Man Of The Third Millennium sang. No it was a veritable medley, an 'American Trilogy' if you will of hits. He opened with "Fuck The Millennium" by the KLF, then segued into ALS and then hit us with the theme from Captain Scarlet.

The first song I heard on record was Air. Of course it was bloody Air. There's going to be sherbet, etc. etc.

Tom, Monday, 4 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)

the first song i can *remember* is "the hills are alive with the sound of music" lying on the couch watching julie andrews cavorting over austrian hills in serious fear for my life , or at least my liver. everything the night before is a horrible red wine induced blur (or bleeeuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrgggghh to be more prescise).

carsmilesteve, Monday, 4 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)

'RUN DNA' by the Avalanches, performed live on the Beats Stage at Y2KO! at Melbourne's Exhibition Buildings. Bloody unreal. Watch out you Poms, the Avalanches are heading your way next.

mike stuchbery, Monday, 4 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)

I know it was something Scottish. We had a Scottish Music Only marathon round my flat. Something about New Years belonging to the Scots, I'm still not entirely sure why, may have had more to do with the Absinthe and the Laphroiagh than the date.

So chances are, it was PRML SCRM, Belle and Sebastian or... ::oh the shame:: Travis.

masonic boom, Tuesday, 5 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Was watching the pre-taped Prince PPV special. Memory's rather hazy, but I imagine he timed it just right to play "You Know What" as the calendar year turned over.

Stellan Scotchgard, Tuesday, 5 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Auld Lang Syne being played by local Orbital-lite-lite band Zone Fluffy.

chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 6 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-five years ago)
