Getz/Gilberto comfortably out front for me

Dolphy, partly because the 50th anniversary of his death is coming up, partly because Out To Lunch! was recorded the same day Ali beat Liston in Miami, but mostly because it's the best thing here.

oh man oh man, so much good stuff. might go 'st louis to liverpool' just cause it's so underrated, i've almost never heard anyone talk about chuck berry's actual albums but that one is fantastic.

Good stuff as usual but once I saw Coltrane "Live at Birdland" I just knew.

Yarli Simon (rattled), Thursday, 19 June 2014 21:14 (ten years ago) link

yeah it's hard to pass up 'birdland' or even like 'juju' but i gotta go with out to lunch

mattresslessness, Thursday, 19 June 2014 23:17 (ten years ago) link

or 'empyrean isles,' fuck. not to mention mingus mingus mingus mingus mingus. this is like ground zero jazz year for me.

mattresslessness, Thursday, 19 June 2014 23:19 (ten years ago) link

think i would vote for literally all of these over 'a hard day's night'

mattresslessness, Thursday, 19 June 2014 23:20 (ten years ago) link

A Hard Day's Night is quite excellent, and obviously seminal. But still, almost every jazz-record on here is miles better.

Frederik B, Thursday, 19 June 2014 23:36 (ten years ago) link

A Hard Day's Night and Out To Lunch are in my all time top 10. went with Rock 'n' Soul cause it will get squashed and it's a kickass record

g simmel, Thursday, 19 June 2014 23:56 (ten years ago) link

That live Jerry Lee Lewis album is epic, he plays everything so manicly.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 20 June 2014 02:33 (ten years ago) link

A lot of these are not real albums (Ronettes, "Having a Rave Up," etc.). The first three on the list are all awesome.

Josefa, Friday, 20 June 2014 02:38 (ten years ago) link

1. Beatles for Sale
2. Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes featuring Veronica
3. From St. Louis to Liverpool
4. All Summer Long

Based on my three or four favourite songs from each.

Out to Lunch, because it has the best sleeve

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Friday, 20 June 2014 09:21 (ten years ago) link

i'm seriously thinking about voting for The Supremes, just look at the first half:

1. "Where Did Our Love Go"
2. "Run, Run, Run"
3. "Baby Love"
4. "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes"
5. "Come See About Me"
6. "Long Gone Lover" (Smokey Robinson)

Bee OK, Friday, 20 June 2014 15:34 (ten years ago) link

ahdn is great too, all killer no filler.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 20 June 2014 17:24 (ten years ago) link

They filmed performances of four of the singles from the album including "Run, Run, Run", "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes", "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Baby Love" for the hit teen concert film, The T.A.M.I. Show" released on December 29, 1964.

what, had to look this up:

well i found these but not sure if these are from that 1964 show.

they are not really that good after-all, shucks.

Bee OK, Saturday, 21 June 2014 02:58 (ten years ago) link

talking about the lip-synching that wasn't good and not the songs. in case that was not clear.

Bee OK, Saturday, 21 June 2014 03:49 (ten years ago) link

can't wait to see the results of this one, as ILM always seems to teach me something.
