Listening to this for the first time, and I thought this, too! Totally hits the same buttons for me.

Saw them live playing the Golden Tea House - basically the living room of someone's row house in Philly - last week. Fucking excellent show, lots of energy with a rollicking crowd and both entities played off each other nicely.

Also picked up the new CD there and it's the best of the bunch with fart better production - especially on the vocals - than the previous two releases.

Damn good stuff.

i don't really like the production on this record, all the cool start/stop guitar shit sounds fake, even though video evidence suggests they totally pull it off live. songs are great tho.

haven't seen a live video that i've liked all that much tbh - either the singing has been off or mixed weirdly or the drumming has been a bit lumpy. records still bangs though.

I'm very drummer-biased -- I can't really get into a band like this if the drumming drags.

yeah, that's sort of what I was getting at with my "Emo" comment, which is probably not exactly the right touchstone but it doesn't sound too far off from idk, Muse or Coheed and Cambria or something. Except with shittier drumming.

i wouldn't say the drumming is shitty, i liked the songs on first blush and obv the vocals are the real high point of this band but yeah that sort of flat, compressed affect that i associate with whatever's left of major label rock

so maybe some of this boils down to how you feel about white lung creeping into paramore kinda territory

i don't listen to that kind of music much so i can get into that hyperfocused cut glass kind of sound. i didn't notice how obscured the drums are until you guys brought it up tho :/

I mean they're not, like, incompetent, but they're not quite tight enough for the style, and the feel is very square, and there's not much going on. The "cut glass" style as goole put it calls for stronger drumming imo.

I have this uncanny-valley-like theory about indieish bands (in the loosest sense, but bands whose aesthetic and aura in some way descends from punk and/or relies on the impression of not being total pros) that the closer they get to actually sounding like "pro" bands the more glaring their flaws become.

that hungry song kinda reminds me of my fave wolf alice. they should tour together.

i like pop grunge in the 21st century.

The production on this is a disaster, it's not even the compression per se, it's just that whole trebly sheen over the guitars that flattens out all the rhythmic and textural power in the songs. Like I'm listening to it and it's really loud and yet it just doesn't feel like I'm listening to a noisy rock record, there's no real force to it.

By way of comparison I listened to the first couple of songs on the previous album and they just sounded so much better.
