the kinds of bands that sportswriters decide to embed an unwelcome youtube clip of, right in the middle of their blog, with a caption like "10:15 and the counting crows never sounded so good"

Found an old iPod in desk drawer. Charged it up. First song was Coolio's "Fantastic Voyage." Nice. This iPod just resurrected itself.

Couple of the ESPN guys like to reference classic 80s rap artists.

earlnash, Sunday, 22 June 2014 03:26 (ten years ago) link

A lot of people in sports "journalism" are shockingly naive. Citing Pearl Jam is not going to make you look more sensitive. Musically, Pearl Jam and Counting Crows don't symbolize anything but conformity. So it's a way of communicating who the dominant culture ought to be in sport. I hate when they do this shit because it's so reactionary. REAL "sports music" would be rap or dance music - even freaking "Life is a Highway" - something that makes you think of energy and physical fitness.

Who listens to Pearl Jam at a sports event?

Springsteen owns this. No artist appeals to dudes in their mid-50s who utterly hate their life quite as much as the "Boss" does.

Train is another band like that. Pot-bellied dudes in the press box think they are being righteous or rebellious when citing the "Boss" or Train or shit like that when nothing could be further from the truth.

Quote I can foresee in Mondays paper if we beat Portugal tomorrow : "I am listening to the Boss and his rousing and celebratorily patriotic anthem Born in the USA while typing this recap". Irony lost on all.

John Buccigross owns this thread btw

"What Kevin Griffin was to Better Than Ezra, Ryan Johansen is to the Columbus Blue Jackets." or etc.

Scott Van Pelt is the big rap name dropper, probably more on the radio than on TV as I can't recall him dropping one during golf coverage. They even did a MC bracket during the NCAA tournament a couple years back (won by Eminem).

Peter Gammons is a big Buffalo Tom fan, cuz there has to be one.

Ben Lindbergh, the Baseball Prospectus managing ed, has reliable indie-hip taste for bands that were hot when he was born (mid '80s), but he also wrote this:
