Dead Finks Don't Vote — ILM Artist Poll #55 — BRIAN ENO

Message Bookmarked

OK, let's poll the work to date of Brian Peter George St John Le Baptiste de la Salle Eno (1948-), composer/theorist/writer/singer/anti-musician/visual artist.

Three Parts:

1. Rank your top 30 Eno tracks. What's eligible is work under Eno's name as solo artist or co-artist (Eno/Byrne, Eno/Cale, etc) and artists that include Eno as a member of a group (Roxy, Scratch Orchestra, Passengers, etc).

normal scoring: 1:40, 2:36, 3:33, 4:30, 5:28, 6:26, 7:25, 8:24, 9:23, 10:22, 11:21, 12:20, 13:19, 14:18, 15:17, 16:16, 17:15, 18:14, 19:13, 20:12, 21:11, 22:10, 23:9, 24:8, 25:7, 26:6, 27:5, 28:4, 29:3, 30:2.

2. Productions. Rank your top FIFTEEN albums that are listed as produced or co-produced by Brian Eno. Note that this section is for albums, not tracks.

3. Work as other than lead artist. Rank your top FIFTEEN tracks that Eno is credited as being involved with that aren't under his name as Artist. Stuff like Bowie's Berlin Trilogy, Talking Heads' 2nd-4th albums, U2 albums that he plays or sings on. This section can also be for Eno remixes of tracks by other artists. Don't forget Lady June's Linguistic Leprosy! (Note: I haven't heard Lady June's Linguistic Leprosy yet.)

Send your ballots to me at wmcrump AT gmail.com, or via ILXmail. Deadline is midnight Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday, July 6th, 2014.

I recently, uh, happened across a 13.6 GB archive of everything in that list from 1971-2009 plus a lot of stuff he's appeared on. There's no way I'll be able to do more than scratch the surface of it, but I'll scratch as much surface as I can in the next 2 weeks.

I really need to listen to Tracks & Traces

I guess "Big Day" and the studio "Miss Shapiro" go to the side poll, huh?

Yeah.

I should add that I have huge gaps in my knowledge of Eno's work, so if I get anything totally wrong, don't hesitate to let me know. I'm in this more to learn about his work than I am to put my thumbprint on the results.

thanks for setting this up! i'm excited about the third section (Work as other than lead artist), but also a bit hesitant. i understand the concept, but it's tough to know where to draw the line. for example, talking heads' second album More Songs... which he produced. other than a few glaring enoisms (like the "spooky reverse reverbs on the vox in 'warning sign') it's much more of a talking heads kind of thing, especially compared to something like remain in light where his influence is obvious. but would all songs on More Songs... be eligible, because technically he's associated with it? i guess it's up to each voter to decide if his footprint is tangible enough on the track in question?

on the same note, is there a more authoritative source than wikipedia's list of albums/songs produced by Eno?

at any rate, should be really interesting results!

I think this will have to be the case. Although with In Conflict, we could conceivably get a little insider info?

Karl Malone, Friday, 20 June 2014 20:48 (ten years ago) link

someday world is also boring. I feel like collaboration doesn't really do much for Eno's output these days, so I'm not sure why he does it. the last few solo ambient things (small craft and Lux) are great.

akm, Friday, 20 June 2014 20:52 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, voting for specific tracks on Lux and Music for Airports is going to be tricky. Lux, in particular, has been a go to sleepy time album for the past year for me, but I'm not sure that one track stands out above the others for me..

Karl Malone, Friday, 20 June 2014 20:55 (ten years ago) link

1/1 is the standout on Music For Airports imo, timeless

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 20 June 2014 21:06 (ten years ago) link

his last two solo joints are especially good. I'm also a fan of the passengers project, lots of gems on there. Might actually vote for the most Enocentric one on that, 'a different kind of blue'.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 20 June 2014 21:19 (ten years ago) link

Not complaining but I think this poll could have also done with a best Eno albums list. The productions list was good but I found assembling it a bit of a hodgepodge – half Eno albums and half "oh this was a good record he was associated with."

That said, I've always cared the most about the tracks polls so that was the meat of what I worked on.

WC, when will you start calculating? I have spent far too much time rethinking my ballot and might actually make some changes if that's an option. Otherwise, will live with what I sent.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 7 July 2014 18:02 (ten years ago) link

nothing ventured, nothing gained!

La Lechera, Monday, 7 July 2014 18:06 (ten years ago) link

Voted. But I was in no mood to vote for any Roxy or U2 (we've done them) and was keen to limit the Bowie and Talking Heads to the minimum as well (we've done or will be doing them too). Consequently, my 15 albums include only two where Eno isn't the credited artist or one of them. And I only offered a handful of things for the third category.

Jeff W, Monday, 7 July 2014 19:05 (ten years ago) link

That is where it gets hard for me. I love Roxy Music and wanted to include quite a few songs from those first two albums which are two of my favourite albums of all time but it seems wrong to vote for them as we just polled them. I started thinking well maybe I'll just limit myself to a few songs from each album but then it's not really an honest list of my actual favourite songs. I'm probably over thinking this really.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 7 July 2014 19:09 (ten years ago) link

I'll probably start plugging stuff into the spreadsheet tomorrow morning, so revised ballots today are not a problem!

I didn't do custom artwork for the rundowns on Zeppelin, Bowie and Miles, and I'm sorry to say that trend will continue.

it's not rocker science (WilliamC), Monday, 7 July 2014 19:30 (ten years ago) link

"Lux" is lovely, but listening back to "The Shutov Assembly" and "Neroli," I think this stuff (literally) writes itself. Those latter two were back in '92 and '93, "Lux" 2012, but if someone told me they all stemmed from the same session/generative program, I'd buy it. Literally in this case, too, because they are indeed all lovely, but I think Eno has days of this stuff in his vaults. Dunno if any or all of it is really any better than my "Bloom" app.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 7 July 2014 19:46 (ten years ago) link

I just used the list at the start of the thread detailing the albums eligible for the tracks poll as my reference when completing my productions part of the ballot and kept the collaborative stuff for the 3rd part.
