MASSIVE ATTACK post-Mezzanine

A patchy body of work, sure, but there are certainly some gems here. Leaving out the Danny the Dog soundtrack because what the fuck is that. Sorry if I've made any other omissions.

So many good ones - "I Against I" and "Girl I Love You" are the first ones that spring to mind.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 12:25 (ten years ago) link

Good idea for a poll. I Against I, Live With Me, Girl I Love You and Paradise Circus are all tremendous in different ways.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 12:27 (ten years ago) link

Songs I really like: I Against I, Everywhen, Small Time Shot Away, False Flags, Pray For Rain, Girl I Love You, Psyche, Paradise Circus.

Also 4 years later, I'm surprised how much I've played and enjoyed their last album (which at the time I only picked up cuz it was quickly heavily discounted)

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 12:32 (ten years ago) link

You could definitely make a killer ten track comp from the material here.

all of these are amazing:

I Against I
Future Proof
What Your Soul Sings
Butterfly Caught
Small Time Shot Away
Pray For Rain
Babel
Splitting the Atom
Girl I Love You
Paradise Circus
Rush Minute
Atlas Air

also gonna spend today listening to their post-Mezzanine material

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 13:29 (ten years ago) link

I voted for Paradise Circus, but then I remembered what I Against I actually was and voted for that. Wish they'd gone down that path further.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 13:52 (ten years ago) link

Forgot that Splitting the Atom is really good too. It sort of sounds like a song for depressed pirates.

BTW, they're apparently reuniting with Tricky for the next one if anyone doesn't know.

oh man I'd actually forgotten which song "Everywhen" is, so fucking fantastic

ppl who dislike 100th Window are insane

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 15:23 (ten years ago) link

Everywhen is so immersive, it creates and perfects its own unique sound world.

I really like certain cuts off 100th Window, but it's quite monotonous taken as a whole.

Yeah it usually sounds great when a song comes up on shuffle - but it's a bit of a chore to listen to the whole thing in one go.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 15:48 (ten years ago) link

I never find it difficult to get through the entire album at once. For me, it's one of those albums where its overwhelming unity of mood builds upon itself in an album-long crescendo rather than bogging down into stasis.

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 15:51 (ten years ago) link

like just now I've gotten to "Name Taken" and tears came to my eyes completely unbidden when the music shifted to signal the start of Horace Andy's vocal line, and I wouldn't even say this is one of the top songs on the album but the build that comes before makes it hit me like a sledgehammer

also that transition into the chorus is immensely satisfying

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 15:56 (ten years ago) link

I don't think I've actually listened to Name Taken for years.

I've done some minor research this afternoon, and so far the answer is probably Girl I Love You.

Tossup between "Paradise Circus" and "I Against I"

Never understood all the love for "Girl I Love You" tbh.

Dynamics, propulsiveness, horns.

oh man I forgot how much I dig "Saturday Come Slow"

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 17:41 (ten years ago) link

Year Saturday Comes Slow is the ultimate "it's sunny outside but I have a life defeating hangover" song (and that's a compliment)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 30 June 2014 00:01 (ten years ago) link

put on Heligoland on Sunday and it was surprisingly obvious to me that this was one of their best albums. Funny how it'll probably be seen in the future as a late-career "completists only" kinda thing, although it pisses all over 'Protection' as an album

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 30 June 2014 09:49 (ten years ago) link

although it pisses all over 'Protection' as an album

Yeah, no. Still a dece record.

BTW, they're apparently reuniting with Tricky for the next one if anyone doesn't know.

99% sure this isn't true. 3D did a session with Tricky a couple of years ago but nothing's come of it so far. Even if a track eventually materialises it's not exactly a reunion.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Monday, 30 June 2014 14:50 (ten years ago) link

They were brilliantly heavy and intense at Glastonbury btw. 3D's techno remix of Jupiter, with new vocals by Martina, was a nice surprise. She also did a great job on Teardrop.

Their Glastonbury show was the best I've seen from them. Crushingly intense and Martina Topley-Bird is great.

Re-Make/Re-Model, Friday, 17 October 2014 17:22 (ten years ago) link

:-) I've checked out 2 youtubes of shows, and I think 'crushingly intense' is fitting. Don't want to spoil it by looking at more, but I'm getting very excited now.

the run of "pray for rain" to "girl i love you" is maybe the strongest in their discography

now every massive attack album has been my favorite massive attack album at some point

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:30 (five years ago) link

The end of the album is brilliant, too. "Rush Minute" and "Saturday Come Slow" are just perfect.

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 20:33 (five years ago) link

yes! i love "rush minute" so much

Eh I wouldn't say stronger than Angel to Exchange, but maybe I'm just a boring canonical bastard.

The music's quite nice and I agree with the sentiment, but I'll never listen to that again. I can't help but feel these experiments are an elaborate form of procrastination to avoid putting out a new damn album.

chap, Monday, 20 July 2020 11:12 (four years ago) link

Maybe they're just not compelled to do a new album?

This EP seems like its primary purpose is to get a bunch of people to read/hear some essays they normally might not.

Delayed action x-post: good list that, DJP.

djh, Wednesday, 24 August 2022 20:31 (two years ago) link

Thank you! (I had to scroll up to see if I still agreed with it and I do, but also they’ve put out subsequent material I would include like Voodoo In My Blood)

castanuts (DJP), Thursday, 25 August 2022 11:55 (two years ago) link

Can't believe I didn't participate.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 25 August 2022 12:13 (two years ago) link

Voodoo in My Blood has become one of my favorite songs by them (good video too)

Pretty much DJP's list, tweaked:
