Are all producers who rap shite?

I'm immediately thinking Dre here and his awful verse on that Em song where he disses JD, but there's something warm about his voice that makes you think of grandad; for me this renders arguments that his flow is muddy and his lyrics banal completely empty. Timbaland has tried his hand but just sounds slightly embarrased with himself. Pharell of the Neptunes occasionally spits some cool little rhymes like on NORE'S 'Grimy', but mostly his singing is acesome so he doesn't count. These are pretty obvious examples, any others? What about producers who are great MCs? RZA perhaps..?

Eminem obv.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 19 October 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh obviously, but his production is shite. well, not as good.

SeanF, Saturday, 19 October 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i still haven't heard enough of Kanye West on the mic to get an idea of where he falls into this category, anyone?

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 19 October 2002 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

El-P

T. Weiss (Timmy), Saturday, 19 October 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that a yes or a no?

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 19 October 2002 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

How bout a maybe.

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 19 October 2002 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

NO

Del's pretty good at the whole double-duty thing, I think. "The Who", his one full-length production contribution to Third Eye Vision, had one of the best beats on the album.

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 19 October 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

But then I'm turning this into "Are all rappers who produce shite?" and so far I'm willing to say "not quite".

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 19 October 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Jermaine Dupri is horrendous

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 19 October 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Timbaland is excellent on Aaliyah's "We Need A Resolution" and Bubba's "Twork A Little". Dre's great on Blackstreet's "No Diggity" and 2Pac's "California Love".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 19 October 2002 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah.

Juan Marquez, Saturday, 19 October 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd have to say that RZA is a great producer and MC.

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Sunday, 20 October 2002 01:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Madlib/Quasimoto

pete b. (pete b.), Sunday, 20 October 2002 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"Here We Go" by Timbaland is almost embarassingly shit. "He said this, and she said that, and she said that Timbaland can't rap". They said that because THEY WERE FUCKING RIGHT.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 20 October 2002 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

No. Erick Sermon (from EpMD, producer of Redman etc). Brilliant solo LPs.

I don't know if Dr Dre counts because he doesn't always write his own lyrics (check the credits).

Android (Android Elvis), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Timbaland is the best example evah of a great producer who's shite at rapping.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 21 October 2002 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

even though he's got a weird rhythm and he doesn't say much, i love the way JayDee raps and i think he's making the best beats today

that goes the same for Madlib, except i think yesterday's new quintet is shit

JasonD, Monday, 21 October 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Diamond D said he was the best producer on the mic. Nope. Lord Finesse, RZA are better just to name two.

js williams, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 04:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i think dre raps fine. i like jay dee raps also.

ron (ron), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 05:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi-tek isn't a very good mc. Neither is ?uestlove, ha. Evidence has some pretty hot beats, he might be able to do better as a producer than a rapper. Don't the Arsonists do all their own production?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 06:55 (twenty-three years ago)

dre's fine. add "forget about dre" to the above. rza is NOT a great mc. timbo's a bit shitty. p.diddy? hahahahahahahahahahahahah!

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 07:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Q-Unique produces most of the Arsonists stuff, and he's pretty handy on the mic (the best remaining member of ASF, put it that way).

E-Swift is an example of a decent producer who can rap. Never the finest MC in the Alkaholics, but an average Alkaholic is worth 150% of most other rappers.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Several decent UK rappers / producers, esp. Braintax, the Taskforce boys.
