I've said elsewhere that the Whitney album generated her most depressing, generic singles. But c'mon Expose? The only thing wrong with it is that "Come Go With Me" and "Let Me Be the One" are even better. The System? Crowded House? And "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" is its own beast: an even better amalgam of eighties glitz and "Afro-Cuban" rhythms than "Conga."

I figured you'd be as much a sucker for "Don't Dream It's Over" as I am.

"I Want Your Sex" sounded so goofy to six-year-old me at the time because it tried so hard to sound controversial. "Sex! Unnngh! Sex! Ow!" Terrible song.

ha. i saw the replacements that week (7/25/87, the stone pony, asbury park).

back then, i probably would've voted either expose or u2. and it's still either one of those two today.

Weak? Cut from the same cloth, sure, but a really strong piece of pop on its own.

i like bob seger a lot, but i had to google "shakedown." i have no memory of that song at all. listening to it now, i can see why.

it's not really a reclamation. it was the biggest of her #1s pre-"I Will Always Love You," has always been her most widely covered song, most likely to show up on lists of best 80s songs, etc. ILM is one of the only places i've seen where anyone even tries to put it down.

has always been her most widely covered song, most likely to show up on lists of best 80s songs - these two are measurably not true (by the numbers 'greatest love of all' and 'how will i know', and it's not close), at the time whitney got lukewarm reviews at best even from critics (understandably imo - the album is by and large houston cutting ties w/ r&b and ny dance roots and going straight for the ac pop that had performed best from the first album)(the one exception from the singles - jellybean's 'love will save the day' - performed worst so credit to her i guess for reading the market right). 'i wanna dance with somebody' is ok but as merrill-rubicam jams go it's decidedly second tier.

I only ever owned the 7" of one of these so I'm voting for that. I loved The System though.

The Canadian mall-punk band These Kids Wear Crowns had some airplay up here with a cover a few years before her death. I won't punish anyone here by linking it.

It is one of her best-remembered hits so I know I'm in the minority here.

listening now, I may actually not have heard that since 1985, and... ugh this vocal style, the thin, sorta nasally keening blech. there was tons of this in the 80s, Suzie Q etc.

in 1985 I think I was really into the Beatles. I liked U2 at the time but I grew out of that p quickly.
