Quickspace: Where should I start?

OK, despite my predilection for dronerock, I don't actually own anything by them. Yeah, they're one of those bands that I'll always put on when I go over my friend's house, etc. ...

But last night, they rearranged my atoms at the ICA. I'd never seen them live before. Why? Because I'm stupid.

So if I were to get something by them, what should I get? Extra special bonus love to anyone who offers to make me a CDR, so that I can choose what album to get when I finally get paid...

They Shoot Horse Don't They by a mile; sorry I can't be more helpful.

You might start at the beginning -- I think that first album is great (better than the first EP, IMO.) Also like Precious Falling, but it's a little odd & not the best to start with.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 20 October 2002 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the first album. they have gotten more grimey on the last couple but the first was clean sounding almost ethereal in spots and has the beautiful songs like docile I and II and Rise and 69. also the eps when they were still quickspace supersport(before they changed their line-up are great with the 14 minute long 'superplus' being my favorite.

Ned ROXORS!!!

kate, Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, they never made anything nearly as great as "They Shoot Horse Don't They?". Just download that and yr set.

I must protest on behalf of "Friend", "Happy Song #2" and "Song for Someone". Then again, I'll always have a soft spot for the early stuff: I spent an otherwise bleak but musically comforting month listening to nothing but the first album (I have the US version, with Friend tacked on the end - yay! - but starting with Rise, which isn't a very good album opener, I don't recall exactly how the UK version differs) and Th'Faith Healers' "Imaginary Friend", muttering about Tom Cullinan being my new god and scrawling "all we need is a place to be warm, nice and warm" in the margin of any bits of paper I attempted to work on.

Well, it was probably better for my mental condition than the previous (also bleak) month's diet of harsh noise and Labradford, anyway.

seconded. Kate, I'd give you my copy if it was within my grasp...

seven months pass...
Just got the CDR's today - which I had totally forgotten about - and they ROXOR!!! Thanks a bundle, Ned, you've made my week!

:-) :-) I apologize for taking so long! Rah for Kate! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Kate, 'tis Miss Morgan here. I hope your Quickspace CDR contains 'Precious Mountain', as that is (in my opinion) one of their bestest things!

FMM (Mr Binturong), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It probably doesn't (though I haven't got that far into it) because I stated earlier that I already had Precious Mountain (one of my fave songs ever, BTW) on another mix-CD that someone had made me...

kate, Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and please stick around, FMM! You can add an emphatic "NO!" to the "Is Kate dating Fennesz?" rumours floating around these parts. ;-)

kate, Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

NO!

She is not doing any such thing....as far as I know....

FMM (Mr Binturong), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

But you might not know everything!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

FMM knows everything.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, what IS disc 1 (the purple disc) track 7?

In case you didn't write down the tracklisting, it's a frothy, MBV-ish big guitar riff, with this perky flute riff a la early Mercury Rev bopping over the top, and the girl sings something like "Girls aloud for me, fizzing fizzing..." over and over and then there's a middle bit about "Cheer up man! Insects buzzing round (bzzzzzzzzz), falling in the water, lying on the grass..." and it ends with this insanely catchy "la la la, la la la" riff.

What IS this song? It is the new Carolanne!

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Just at a guess, sounds like a track from "Precious falling", the second Quickspace LP, wasn't it "Quickspace Happy Song 2"? I've got it buzzing around my head now if it is.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Rob might be right, but I'll have to dig up the albums and double check...
