... a la Celtic Frost - "Danse Macabre" or Sarcofago - "Recrucify"

Who started this trend? And does it crop up anywhere outside of BM (&, subsequently, doom)?

"Triumph of Death" is another early one that comes pretty close to what I'm describing here, despite including some more 'conventional' passages

dunno about the unmarked time part, but Beherit are the kings of this, since they mix their vocals SO LOUD over the music

as for the timing part, I guess Abruptum's "free improv noise" bm might be relevant here?

How about this?

Origins: Ramayana monkey chant? Stravinsky's Les Noces? The Uruk-hai music from the fellowship of the ring OST?

that Kayo Dot is in the right general neighborhood, but the vocals seem more "recitative" than "expressive"—I'm looking for real scenery-chewing stuff... regardless of whether he turns out to be the originator, Tom Warrior is definitely the gold standard here

Should maybe clarify that I am not expecting to find entire albums full of this trope (again, that would be doom), but the short interludes (separate track or not) where it seems like the singer told the drummer, Hey, just play some slow tom-rolls & cymbal swells & follow my lead

Trelldon

Trelldom that is. Scenery chewing is what Gaahl does.

Belketre - "Hate". Hard to even classify this as singing, but black and minimal it is. Especially black

Metal is kinda debatable here - they sound like they're wandering in a weird zone between jazz, prog and outright free noodling - but I would guess this was almost definitely the result of hearing Celtic Frost's "Danse Macabre."

Belketre are one of my favourite recent discoveries.

Did Moëvöt have vocals? It's been at least five years since I listened to them. But Les Legions Noires are kinda up in this "style"...

Necromantia is on the busier side, musically, but definitely acceptable to these ears in its open-ended structure & its use of diabolical cackling

Belketre, "Hate" = more or less on-target, although songs with *multiple* sources of grunting/groaning/screaming overlaid eventually take on a different character--less focused, more atmospheric (I know "Danse Macabre" does this as well, & that's one reason why I decided to change the thread title from "Black metal songs dominated by a vocalist emoting in unmarked time &c")
