Daft Punk. I feel like most of these should have a big asterisk *because internet and music industry have changed

LimbsKing, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 19:26 (eleven years ago)

i chose to be more subtle than that.

woops, should say blake shelton missed the cut by a couple days. first album came out 7/31/01, first #1 came out 7/12/11.

da croupier, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 19:26 (eleven years ago)

No TobyMac?

MarkoP, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 19:31 (eleven years ago)

oh dammit assumed that dude's solo debut came later...sorry toby!

da croupier, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 19:32 (eleven years ago)

Not that anyone would vote for him

MarkoP, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 19:33 (eleven years ago)

toby voters should vote for chris tomlin instead

Blake Shelton missed the cut by a couple months. sorry BS fans

Why should Sabbath fans care?

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 6 August 2014 20:46 (eleven years ago)

As a fan of bullshit, I resent that supposition.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 20:48 (eleven years ago)

I don't know what's more strange: that Matchbox 20, Pink, Tom Petty, and Black Sabbath never had a number one album before this decade, or that Sia, Tony Bennnet, and QOTSA had a number one album this decade.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 20:59 (eleven years ago)

its either between Cake or Daft Punk for me though I'm a bit scared to go back and listen to any of Cake's music

Maggie killed Quagmire (collest baby ever) (frogbs), Wednesday, 6 August 2014 21:54 (eleven years ago)

QOSTA are the act I listen to the most out of these, though not necessarily the best.

This the US chart I take it?

Had no idea Robin Thicke wasn't new.

sorry, yeah, this is US

Weird mixture of "acts that broke out/crossed over in a major way after years of unheralded work" & "long-standing second-tier pop stars whose new albums are pretty much guaranteed to hit #1 unless they drop the same day as Kanye's"

dont even make sense right now because of my shoulder medication (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 6 August 2014 22:19 (eleven years ago)

... or as LimbsKing succinctly put it most of these should have a big asterisk

life should have a big asterisk in 2014

Daft Punk is my favorite but Weird Al gets the vote for longevity.

skip, Thursday, 7 August 2014 01:15 (eleven years ago)

ranking the #1 albums that i've heard:

Weird Al > Pink > Foo Fighters > Robin Thicke > Daft Punk > Matchbox 20 > Gary Allan > Tom Petty

as far as the acts themselves, though, which i guess is the thread, Tom Petty narrowly over Weird Al and Pink

some dude, Thursday, 7 August 2014 01:40 (eleven years ago)

I'm not sure what to call it -- a post-iTunes culture that allows established acts with fervent fanbases to top the Billboard 200 with sales weeks that wouldn'tve reached the top 5 when their first albums came out (while the industry crumbled around them). Let's call it EAWFF (established acts with fervent fanbases).

Cake – EAWFF
The Foo Fighters - EAWFF
Jill Scott – EAWFF
Tony Bennett – EAWFF
Matchbox 20 – earlier peak occurred when boy bands were selling millions a week
Pink – earlier peak occurred when boy bands were selling millions a week
Chris Tomlin – not familiar enough
Gary Allan – not familiar enough
Daft Punk – EAWFF plus
Queens Of The Stone Age – EAWFF
Black Sabbath – EAWFF
Robin Thicke – huge hit single released well in advance
The Black Keys – legit gradual growth in popularity
Sia – legit gradual growth in popularity
"Weird" Al Yankovic – EAWFF
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – EAWFF

LimbsKing, Thursday, 7 August 2014 02:13 (eleven years ago)

i don't even like metal but how is this not Black Sabbath in a landslide? hope my vote helps it along.

Bee OK, Thursday, 7 August 2014 02:14 (eleven years ago)

Seems like quite a few are just artists whose fervent fan base is still old enough to be in the generation that even considers buying music in an album format (digital or physically)? Guys over 40 or so who might buy the new Tom Petty or Sabbath or Foo Fighters album, but generally don't buy or otherwise seek out music.

Brio2, Thursday, 7 August 2014 14:08 (eleven years ago)

Voting for Weird Al. Someone has to.

FYI the downturn of the industry helping established mid level and cult acts rise to the top is exactly why I made the poll

da croupier, Thursday, 7 August 2014 14:23 (eleven years ago)

While it makes the victory a little phyrric, I like the "congrats, someone still cares" aspect

da croupier, Thursday, 7 August 2014 14:24 (eleven years ago)

Omg iPhone didn't tell me I misspelled pyrrhic

da croupier, Thursday, 7 August 2014 14:26 (eleven years ago)

oh yeah I think I got the motivation behind the poll, it's really interesting - just curious about how exactly it works out this way. I wonder what the hard data is on who still buys albums agewise and even regionally.

Seems insane Tom Petty's getting his first number one in 2014, but it kind of makes total sense too. Just seems like a hugely interesting lens to look at how the industry has changed.

Brio2, Thursday, 7 August 2014 15:23 (eleven years ago)

Damn The Torpedos hit #2 and so did Mojo, with a few Top 5s in between, so its definitely a bit of a quirk this is his first #1

da croupier, Thursday, 7 August 2014 15:51 (eleven years ago)

i don't even like metal but how is this not Black Sabbath in a landslide? hope my vote helps it along.

i thought the same but i haven't heard the album yet

Maggie killed Quagmire (collest baby ever) (frogbs), Thursday, 7 August 2014 15:55 (eleven years ago)

I haven't heard it, but I thought the consensus on the new Sabbath reunion album is that it's bad.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 7 August 2014 15:58 (eleven years ago)

this poll is best act, not best album, though, right?

some dude, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:04 (eleven years ago)

"Weird Al" just over QOTSA.

how's life, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:06 (eleven years ago)

OK, like a mile over QOTSA.

how's life, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:06 (eleven years ago)

this poll is best act, not best album, though, right?

It is. I was just making a side observation.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:09 (eleven years ago)

i was thinking best act, but as per usual personally i don't care if you go with best act, album, haircut, whatevs. assuming i don't forget or the chart collapses entirely i'll probably revive the thread any time somebody new gets the honor

da croupier, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:10 (eleven years ago)

Best act would be Sabbath for me, best album Daft Punk.

No idea if I should vote for the former?

Moka, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:53 (eleven years ago)

Oh ok best act it is.

Moka, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:53 (eleven years ago)

Sab.

tempted by QOTSA but feels churlish to pick them over sab

big drop-off after that for me, to some lifers where a little goes a long way

da croupier, Thursday, 7 August 2014 17:00 (eleven years ago)

weird al being the sentimental favorite of that bunch

da croupier, Thursday, 14 August 2014 00:04 (eleven years ago)

oddly enough, none of the artists on the Guardians of the Galaxy OST (the current #1) have ever scored a #1 album in the US, with Bowie reaching a career peak of #2 last year with The Next Day.

I can't believe Cake had #1 album in 2011, somehow I missed when it happened.
