Velvets. That album was so critically acclaimed -- to the point where it became the paradigm of a critically beloved album -- that it's become sort of institutionalized, and people have forgotten how good it is or else are afraid to praise it too ostentatiously because to do so is a kind of cliche. Because of this it is underrated now.

But really, no other album contains that many memorable moments. I think I've memorized the whole album and could just close my eyes and go through it in my head and I can't do this for other albums that I've listened to more.

last round.

Close to voting for the Velvets, but "Live" At The Village Vanguard for me was basically, "Hey, there's this universe over here you might not have seen before; wanna check it out?" Everything was different after I heard it.

Actually, come to think of it, I could say the same about the Velvets.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 21 August 2014 15:05 (ten years ago)

i'm going to try and listen to every one of these in order before voting. i think that would be a great experience. especially since i don't even know John Coltrane.

Velvets are gonna walk this. Voting beach boys just to be different.

voted my favorite things, but more to the point, where will acclaimed polling go from here?

have we reached the conclusion or will we circle around? will we poll tone poems and then individual conductors' interpretations of tone poems?

"Live" at the Village Vanguard.

HIghway 61 vs. Velvets vs. Silent Way is really as heavyweight a card as you can get. I'm voting Miles.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 23 August 2014 04:47 (ten years ago)

Freewheelin' is one of my faves by any artist, any genre. Can't not vote for it here.

"Live" At The Village Vanguard is as good a place to start as any; in fact, I'd say it's an ideal introduction.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 23 August 2014 05:10 (ten years ago)

Out to Lunch! was that "there's this universe..." moment for me
