there's no thread on sia somehow. i like how she doesn't face the audience when she performs anymore, and how ellen had to explain this to her viewers before sia came on perform chandelier with her back turned.

haven't seen her do this yet but it seems super gimmicky? like next album cycle she'll probably be back to performing 'normally'

Always liked her voice, never been that keen on her material.

Yeah seems like a cheap way to get people talking. Or otherwise not a great solution to curb stage fright.
― Evan, Friday, 5 September 2014 16:07 (ten years ago)
the back-turned thing is a total gimmick, i agree. but i'm fine with her being a gimmicky act. her songs are immaculately produced and arranged, powerfully sung, and super predictable. the way she contains her passionate vocals in this slick, digestible package reminds me of the effect i think bowie was going for on the ballads on "station to station." sia is clearly not as troubling as the thin white duke, but there is a refined, aloof quality to her that seems very deliberate

She's doing "Chandelier" now on Saturday Night Live with her face obscured and she's accompanied by a mime whose face is covered in white makeup and is signing for the deaf. No Shia L. in "Elastic Heart," just the girl dancer and another dancer dressed like her but presumably her Mom. It was weird. She and Lady Gaga have similar voices (and I'm not craz about either one).

Maybe that was the dancers from the official video. Wacky.
Sia -- Chandelier

This was my first time hearing her. Eh, its not for me.

"Chandelier" has been omnipresent here in France since the beginning of last summer, and it's still top 5 here. was #1 every week I checked during the fall.

Lol at doing chandelier on snl months after they parodied it

Surprised there's not more talk about Sia, or maybe it's on another thread? Anyway, sounds like her current arena tour is a pretty radical statement for a pop performance. Still not quite sure what her message is, and I find a lot of her songwriting to be pretty generic (from a composition standpoint; I don't mind her voice or lyrics), but I'm intrigued by a singer who strictly stands stock-still and obscured at the side of the stage while ceding the spotlight to a dancer or two. Does she even tour with a band?

I still can't believe Sia the international pop star is the same Sia who sang on Zero 7 albums and had a curious UK Top Ten single in 2000 about a friend who always cancels.
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 15 October 2016 11:24 (eight years ago)
I saw Sia on "We Are Born" tour in 2010 and she had a full band, but also she did not obscure her face then. Not sure what she is doing now, but she's an incredible live vocalist.
― Ross, Saturday, 15 October 2016 16:23 (eight years ago)
My understanding is that she is currently literally standing on a pedestal to the side of the stage, face obscured, singing, with no interaction, while a series of dancers and videos do their thing.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 15 October 2016 18:26 (eight years ago)
it's part of her "i don't want to be famous" shtick + also why a lot of young ppl think that the girl dancing in the music videos is sia
― dyl, Sunday, 16 October 2016 02:35 (eight years ago)
I dunno, even my daughter knows who her dancer is!
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 16 October 2016 14:02 (eight years ago)
Man, her show was either brilliant, bullshit or brilliant bullshit. I'd be more inclined to defend it if she was touring theaters and not arenas, though.

New songs are a step up from the last record which was full of too many over bloated victim to victor anthems

are those two LSD tracks a one-off, or will they be recording an entire album together?
it's been 4 years since her last *proper album*, so it will be interesting to see how much her "Titanium" formula has influenced the way she writes songs for herself. I can tolerate those self-affirmation anthems in moderation ("Bird Set Free" is one of her best imho) but as a whole This Is Acting is kinda wearying. I've just been getting into her music recently and Colour the Small One is my favorite, and her 2007 KCRW session is an incredible performance. Ariana Grande's "Quit" is also A++ and maybe the best song she's written for another artist

really good to finally hear some decent sia tracks other than the recent four tet remixes..i mean there has always been a few good tracks on her newer work, but nothing since we are born has been that good

Zu is newly sober when she receives news that she is to become the sole guardian of her half-sister named Music, a young girl on the autism spectrum. The film explores two of Sia's favorite themes finding your voice and creating family.
