Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Saturday, 6 September 2014 20:47 (ten years ago)

i like a lot of songs on this list #musiccriticism

owe me the shmoney (m bison), Saturday, 6 September 2014 20:48 (ten years ago)

Only a couple in there I don't know, but "Hot Thing" seems suspect. I'd replace it with "When Doves Cry."

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 September 2014 20:50 (ten years ago)

He has four other volumes. Not sure if that's on one of them though.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Saturday, 6 September 2014 20:52 (ten years ago)

wow what a shocking and necessary new canon to construct, very unlike the others i have seen

dyl, Saturday, 6 September 2014 20:56 (ten years ago)

He's been tweeting these out. zzzzzzz

curmudgeon, Saturday, 6 September 2014 22:03 (ten years ago)

came into this thread to ask why Sasha Frere-Jones didn't give Charli XCX a shout-out but i see that that is unnecessary

some dude, Saturday, 6 September 2014 22:17 (ten years ago)

lol

at least he chose the right song

dyl, Saturday, 6 September 2014 22:22 (ten years ago)

i hope other twitter ppl tried hijacking the hashtag w/ songs that would not be 'canon-approved'

dyl, Saturday, 6 September 2014 22:27 (ten years ago)

I know that people find him groan-worthy, but this is a very good list. Voted "Maps," but could have just as easily voted for half of the things on here.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Saturday, 6 September 2014 22:57 (ten years ago)

I can almost get a top 10 there: 1. "Beat Bop," 2. "Work It," 3. "Open Your Heart," 4. "Carey," 5. "Transmission," 6. " I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, 7. "I Only Have Eyes for You"

clemenza, Saturday, 6 September 2014 23:41 (ten years ago)

Quickly scanned the list, saw La Roux included, decided this whole enterprise is a huge troll.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 6 September 2014 23:45 (ten years ago)

This is tough for me but prob Cavern

not a bad batch of songs but way less idiosyncratic than his annual singles lists used to be. if you told me this was by a webzine staff i'd believe it

da croupier, Sunday, 7 September 2014 01:53 (ten years ago)

is he doing ebert-style essays or just tweeting?

da croupier, Sunday, 7 September 2014 01:55 (ten years ago)

he wrote about a couple of them here but i think that's it:

call all destroyer, Sunday, 7 September 2014 01:57 (ten years ago)

feels kinda lazy/indulgent for a "major" critic to just put these lists out without writing anything, even just for framing/context, but whatever

call all destroyer, Sunday, 7 September 2014 01:58 (ten years ago)

was almost about to vote for the song i requested last week at the bowling alley disco night (toxic) but then i saw carey and now i just don't know

Mordy, Sunday, 7 September 2014 02:00 (ten years ago)

well, "wrote"

SFJ: This one: it’s obvious, but it’s insane. And in terms of rap appearances, it’s one of Jay Z’s best verses, period. It’s perfect. I’m not gonna fight with a hit – sometimes the hit is the hit. With Beyonce, I could have chosen so many songs. I could have put on Irreplaceable. Almost did. Got very close.

this undercuts my assumption this is in preparation for a book cuz i think he'd have more interesting things to say if he was putting that degree of thought in to this.

da croupier, Sunday, 7 September 2014 02:01 (ten years ago)

yeah that's what i mean, like this is no different than one of my friends throwing together a playlist except that the guardian wouldn't call them to talk about it.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 7 September 2014 02:03 (ten years ago)

Also I like "hot thing" ok but that he picked that over "ballad of Dorothy Parker" is disappointing not the least becuz I first learned of "ballad" from a spin review of timbaland he wrote in the 90s (not even getting into whether prince has a couple dozen other worthy contenders)

da croupier, Sunday, 7 September 2014 02:47 (ten years ago)

lol was so taken back by "hot thing" i missed he also big-up'd "never take the place of your man". nonetheless.

da croupier, Sunday, 7 September 2014 02:49 (ten years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

haha yeah -- in a SPIN review in '97. I had the same response.

or "the word girl" but really "outstanding"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 September 2014 00:22 (ten years ago)

Hot Thing is perfect, tho. It's a p good/interesting list to me bt I don't know why SFJ's thought of as objectionable

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Thursday, 11 September 2014 00:27 (ten years ago)

Voted for Pony. His list could've been autogenerated by Amazon recommendations.

Raccoon Tanuki, Thursday, 11 September 2014 07:48 (ten years ago)

eah that's what i mean, like this is no different than one of my friends throwing together a playlist except that the guardian wouldn't call them to talk about it.

What a villain

Now you're messing with a (President Keyes), Thursday, 11 September 2014 13:21 (ten years ago)

just kind of feel like the notion of a canon in general is just kind of dumb. more so when you are just arbitrarily throwing up your personal favorite songs

marcos, Thursday, 11 September 2014 13:30 (ten years ago)

I think this "canon" thing comes from the title of this thread, the SFJ piece about this doesn't mention that word.

I only hate 3 or 4 of these songs. Good effort.

Most of these lists is zzzz

Raccoon Tanuki, Thursday, 11 September 2014 16:58 (ten years ago)

needs more artists with dollar signs in their name, huh?

alpine static, Thursday, 11 September 2014 17:10 (ten years ago)

It's actually a very good list. My only quibble at a glance is that I think that's a boring, though perfectly fine, Joni Mitchell song to pick out of all of them.

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Thursday, 11 September 2014 17:15 (ten years ago)

Oh but hey we could aall be wetting ourselves over fkav Twigs

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Thursday, 11 September 2014 17:18 (ten years ago)

I was going to comment earlier but I vomited all over my keyboard when I saw this list. I thought ISIS was evil...

crazy isn't even one of my ten favorite pylon songs. getting your opinions on post-punk from michael stipe is like getting your opinions on jazz from wynton marsalis.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 12 September 2014 00:01 (ten years ago)

It's essentially a list of famous, mostly downbeat and slow, pop songs from his lifetime. Yawn.

Raccoon Tanuki, Friday, 12 September 2014 16:27 (ten years ago)

there are maybe 4 slow songs on there. also SFJ is 12 years old. You are wrong on all counts.

Now you're messing with a (President Keyes), Friday, 12 September 2014 16:30 (ten years ago)

I am shocked to discover that "Warm Leatherette" was not a US pop hit...Racoon, you steered me wrong.

curmudgeon, Friday, 12 September 2014 16:37 (ten years ago)

I think this "canon" thing comes from the title of this thread, the SFJ piece about this doesn't mention that word.

i feel like most canon-constructing exercises don't "mention that word" either... basically any Important List published by a prominent critic or publication can be assumed to be an attempt to add to the canon, especially if so much of what it includes is already acknowledged in the canon

dyl, Friday, 12 September 2014 19:03 (ten years ago)

Raccoon double c better check the spelling

Raccoon Tanuki, Friday, 12 September 2014 20:21 (ten years ago)
